CDs burning with static!!! new topic

Hi, I am starting a new thread to see if we can get apple to pay any attention to us. Many of us are having trouble with our burner burning static in our music Cds. We have tried all different types of blank media, but nothing is helping.

The strange thing that happens to me is....
I start playing the cd, it is fine until about track 5 or 6, then it is static-y and skips.
I turn off the car, start it up later, and starting at those same track, they are perfectly fine until about 5 or 6 tracks later, then... static.
That means the static is not inherent to the track, it is something else totally weird.

Who else is having that problem?
Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing it?

Er, maybe a piece of a dust bunny is hanging out in your CD player. If it was the burned CD itself, the problem would be in the same place on the CD and it wo¨ldn't be fine one time and not the next I would think. Have you cleaned the lens on your lasar yet? A dirty lens on you CD player can cause static and skipping the same way a glob of dust can cause a phono needle to skip and cause static on a record.

Thanks, but all other cds play fine. I know it is weird for static to happen on a burned cd in different places at different times, but there is a topic at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2076757#2076757 that has a bunch of other people with the same problem, and no one has come up with an answer.

Here is what we have gone thru= using different types and brands of cds, uninstalling and reinstalling the itunes software, going back to an older version of the software after installing an update, etc etc.

Thanks for starting this thread. I have a brand new MacBook Pro 1.83 and the same thing is happening to me but I get 100% static. Absolutely nothing. It records the track info and plays the static for as long as the song is supposed to go for. I cant grab and drop the music from iTunes to Toast because it converts to a different file type and there is no sound, just track names and times. Its very strange. I can grab and drop music I import from cd to hard drive to toast and it burns fine. But music I buy from iTunes can not be transferred. Actually iTunes has never succesfuly burned anything. Only toast. What is the problem with iTunes?

Thanks for your help but The static is even there when I burn from iTunes. iTunes does not let me burn anything at all. It is very strange. So that means anything that I purchase from iTunes, it will be impossible for me to put it to disc. I know my burner works and its totally the fault of the iTunes program. I hope Mac will tell us something soon.

I have finally fixed the problem that I was having by merely changing the burn speed to 16x. Now all of my cds burn fine, down to the last track. It has to do with the media being thinner at the outside of the blank cd, where the last tracks are. Slower speed makes a deeper groove, and eliminates static and skipping. Worth a try!

I'll leave this thread going so some of the other questions can be answered.

Lowering the burn speed should really not be necessary. I would sooner suspect that the firmware and drivers for the Apple-shipped CD burner are at fault. I burn most of my CDs on my PC with a Plextor drive, at 52x, and have never once had a problem. For what it's worth, the word on the street is that for any CD recorder in question, the maximum burn speed is also the optimum burn speed.

As long as you aren't burning purchased/protected iTMS content to audio CD, then you might have better luck using a CD burning program independent of Apple drivers (Toast, Discribe, Liquid CD, etc.).

EUREKA!!
I think I solved it for myself....
I unistalled "OSS 3D" (the new version has a feature that will apply special features to CD Burns) and then reinstalled itunes by removing the pref files (itunes, ituneseq, and itunes helper all in user/library/preferences and the itunesX receipt found in computer name/receipts and downloaded a fresh copy of itunes and VOILA...it was now able to burn!!

Here's hoping this works for you all

Cheers mate, that OSS 3D thing generally screws everything up... I wasted about 5 cds, giving them to friends not knowing they were all static-y.

I also realised that it is not necessary to completely reinstall iTunes to get CDs to burn correctly, I merely had to uninstall the OSS 3D plugin/software.

Tis annoying that it didn't work with OSS 3D, as it did produce interesting effects with the sound, albeit using a good 30% more CPU and slowing everything down...
