Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

I dont know if they had a lot in stock. They were going to just "replace" my black. I asked about the white and whether or not it was painted on. They guy said, no, its just straight aluminum. I asked if I could just return this phone and buy the white. He said had to see if they had white in stock. He checked and said they could do that. So he passed me off to a sales rep and told her the situation. She returned my black and i bought the white.

Go to the apple store first. That will be the fastest if they have it in stock. They might keep some in stock for the sole purpase of exchange and returns. I know they were out of stock of earpods, but later i had to take mine in because the remote wasnt working, They did have extra earpods for replacements for that very purpose.

If you call apple they will just email you a return label. You mail the phone in and wait for your replacement (same color). In order to switch colors you have to return your phone and repurchase (within return policy time frame)

Hello lelio98. Please let me know how it goes. Your story so far has been on the SAME level of frustration as mine. Apple was proving to be difficult with me at first (I live 300 miles from an Apple store, I had to do this all on the phone) and Sprint is telling me I dropped MY phone on my OWN and they will not replace a dropped phone.

The level of unprofessionalism surrounding this release is unfathomable. I'm awaiting a "new" one in the mail, but all **** is going to break loose if it isn't new but in fact a refurbished or repaired item. I paid for a new device.

I just talked to the apple through the phone and they are sending me an replacement a brand new one or something so i was wondering if anyone has/have received their replacement iphone yet not picking it up from the apple store. If so was the phone like inside of the box that came when my first iphone came to my house? That black box saying iphone 5 with like manuals and everything?

You need to call them back and tell them you want a brand new one with a new serial number and a box.

You did not pay for and go through all this trouble for a refurbished phone that's going to start randomly restarting on you a few months from now. Demand a brand new phone.

If the adviser can't help you, talk to a new one. If they say "we don't have any refurbished ones so this one will be new", MAKE SURE you have them tell you it isn't some "new in box" crap, but an actual NEW/SEALED device.

They are doing 100% new/unopened exchanges in the Apple stores, so why should you settle for anything less?

I just got back from my Genius Bar appointment and they basically told me that they are not doing exchanges for cosmetic flaws. Looks like they took a stance of late. Since I bought my phone from AT&T, they tell me to buy a new phone from the store and return my current phone to AT&T since there is a 30 day return policy. I need to read the fine print, but I believe that there is a restocking fee. Was tempted to get a white one instead, but my blemish is so minor that I decided to keep it.

Yes, correct. Demand nothing less than that. Tell them to look at this thread if you have to. They are doing 100% EVEN EXCHANGES in the Apple stores. You're not going to settle for some refurbished crap. That's for people who drop their phones in the pool. Apple screwed up and you deserve a new device. As do all of us.

edit: it seems they're denying even exchanges at certain stores. This is 100% pure bull crap and if this happens to you I'd recommend talking to the Apple Care help line.

Did you pay for a damaged phone? Did you pay for a damaged phone that's been repaired? I didn't think so. You paid for a new phone. Get one.

I just shipped my scratched-to-**** phone back to Apple and they've been very nice about it, but every time I ask them if I'm getting a new phone, they give me some dodgy answer and get me off the phone. I called back for probably the 4th time today and one of them quickly and briefly told me "Yep, you'll get a new device. New box and everything" so I'll just have to take them for their word. Hopefully it'll get here this week, probably not though.

The working conditions in the manufacturing plant are absolutely awful and this is a very delicate soft aluminum being put into these phones. Apple never stopped to think about this and now they have thousands of damaged phones that they need to be held accountable for. I waited 12 hours outside a Sprint store last Friday and paid $435 for this phone. I expect it to be new. Not to look like it's been dropped a few dozen times.

I know I don't understand how apple can still not have officially acknowledged the problem... This is ridiculous... My carrier (Rogers) says " we don't know for sure if it wasn't you that dropped it, and you have already exchanged it once, so we are unable to do your exchange for you"... Well that "exchange" as they call it was bc at best buy the first box they opened for me contained a phone with a huge gash running across the entire top antenna band of the phone so obviously I made them give me another one right away... My problem is for the second i just gave it a quick glance and figured the second one was good, at home under a desklamp i found 7 little spots where it looks like there is no black coloring and i have two tiny dents on the bottom of the aluminum back right where it meets the glass. Apple is willing to give me a new black model but when I was in the apple store about this a couple days ago I saw two other guys come in and go through 6 boxes before they found 2 good ones so I am demanding a white model and for some reason it's like pulling teeth. I don't get it both my carrier and apple said they will gladly give me another black one but for some reason they refuse to give me a white... Believe me Rogers and apple I PREFER black, every iOS device I own (4 iPhones, 1 iPad) they are all black... The ONLY reason I want white is bc I no longer TRUST the black I didn't change my mind... This whole situation has seriously got my opinions towards apple on the fence and that's a shame because I've been a fan and a customer for many many years.

This is why Apple continues to produce products with little to no quality control... because the faithful don't care! You allow them to continue to produce products year after year and they take advantage of it too!

I won't allow it. I am returning any iPhone 5 with a defect out of box... I paid big bucks for it and I want what they said... the BEST iPhone ever made. Best quality and fit and finish EVER!

I am holding Apple to it. The marketing hype is going to cost them dearly for that... I just got an iPhone white and it has light leaks.... it's going back tomorrow for another exchange! Hopefully as these returns will wake Apple up!
