Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

This is absolutely ridiculous. The iPhone 5 seems to have an Achilles heel with the powder coating. It has texture and can be marred by a fingernail. I can see the the dings were probably caused by the milling machine because I can see fine milling marks in the dings. What happened to all that bs about how a camera takes numerous snapshots of the phone to make sure every aspect is perfect? Whatever happened to the highest level of refinement any phone has ever seen? Complete hyperbole.

Don't speak to a rep. Ask for a supervisor and they will supply you with 3 options:

1. They send you out a box and you ship it back (like you were offered)

2. They ship you a replacement and you ship yours back.

3. They contact Apple stores in your area to see if they have any of your exact model available so that you can go in and have it replaced.

Good luck friend.

Thank you. I'll Try that next time I called in. I'm also concerned because it sounds like it's more than just a replacement issue. It's likely in the design that Apple never calculated. After all, these are made in China. Unfortunately this is the first Apple product for me that feels like it was meeting China. Someone else mentioned how Apple mentioned using cameras for precision. Appears they looked over something more basic like the more scratch tolerant frame.

Exactly.... Thats why im keeping my solid stainless steel iPhone 4. I think im in the minority, but i absolutely love the form factor of 4/4s. The weight and thickness are perfect for me and make it feel like a solid phone. the steel is nearly indestructible. The 5 doesnt have steel...it only has aluminum, which i why these problems are possible...no dents in the steel of 4/4s. The weight and thikness of 4/4s is perfect...the 5 feels more like a light toy....when i put the phone in my pocket..i actually want to feel a little bit o f weight.......

Am I the only only one who loves 4/4s over this new design?

I'm in Barrie, Ontario and I thought I'd add in my experience:

I bought 3 black 16Gb phones in total, 2 from Apple and 1 from Koodo. All the phones were sealed in their boxes. The first Koodo phone had some paint worn off the front bezel edge and Koodo replaced it. The second had 2 significant dents in the rear casing, and the SIM tray didn't sit flush with the body, and they replaced that too. The third has a small chip in the glass but my daughter was so fed up that she decided it was the best of a bad bunch and to keep it. Of the two Apple direct phones, one is flawless (mine) and the other has a small chip and paint missing on the rear bezel edge (my wife's).

So basically, out of 5 phones (all sealed in their boxes), only one of them is unmarked. I'm very disappointed and would like to know who to email to register my complaint?

I am SO happy to see this post. I have a small crack in the top of my screen. I told my husband that it was cracked when I got it, but that Apple would never believe me. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had a problem. I will be calling in the morning to let them know. I was going to just keep it because I just didn't think I could prove I hadn't done it.

I had the same thing with my iPhone 5. I got the white 64 GB and noticed that the metal band was all scuffed up (nicked) and looked poorly machined. I took it back to the apple store and they swapped it out (no questions asked). I asked the apple employee if they have been a lot of cases like this and he said "oh yea". I fell that they really rushed these out...

I received my White iPhone 5 via UPS and found some minor dings on the aluminum back. I promptly called AppleCare and the Advisor was great. She quickly helped me schedule a Genius appointment the next day (today). I went in and they pulled out a replacement iPhone, carefully checked to make sure it was pristine, showed it to me for approval, and swapped it out on the spot. I was impressed at the prompt and friendly attention to the issue.

I suspect that there may be a problem at FoxConn and the workers are showing their dissatisfaction with working conditions. FoxConn should be take responsibility for this issue. I find it hard to believe that Jony Ive would let a problem with quality of this type slip by, although it seems that the black model is having the majority of the problems because the black finish can be scratched.

Just contact Apple and they will take care of you.

Yes, I have 2 scuff too. I got mine on Friday from Orange (UK), and there are 2 scuffs.

I have not really used the phone, hasn't been out of the box apart from setting it up as my number is being ported on Tuesday. But I think I will pop into my Apple Store and get a replacement.

The amount I'm paying for the phone, there shouldn't be any scuffs!

Hi people ordered my iPhone 5 from apple store online in the uk very excited to get it on Friday. when it came got it out the box and first thing I saw, was a little tiny black bit of grit basically in between the glass and the very edge of the screen, it looked as if I could slide a bit of paper in at the edge and flick it out,but the glass is so tight to the white edge bezel no chance of getting it out, so that was the first thing I saw not good.

So after that I thought better inspect the thing, now the next thing a noticed was around the metal band where the screen must fix into, around that area is a couple of scuffs seems like when they pop the screen into the band whatever tool they use must of dented it ever so slightly, but it's enough to see when you hold the 5 back and look at all the glory that is the 5 but then you see these little nicks around the edges that really do spoil it and make it look as if some android user has had the phone before I got it and though right lets just scuff it here and here. So by this point I thought great my 5's a raggy doll. but NO! reports came flooding in that I'm not alone! So on my way round to the back of the 5 I was thinking Do I really want to turn over and see what sort of damage is on the back (sweating at tis point)

I looked at the metal back and the mirrored bezel that chamfers all the way around has also got nicks in it only two on my white model but still this can't be right I thought. Then again ,more and more people started to say onlin About the same thing. So here's my theory

IF YOU WATCH THE APPLE VIDEO OF HOW THEY MADE THE IPHONE 5

When it comes to the machining part of the unibody design, just look at all the tiny bits of metal shards flying about over the phone, I think it's there machines not spraying enough liquid on to the phone, as its cutting to wash away the bits and there causing little scuffs and nicks over the 5's. Also because they making so many every day,the drill that's cutting at these parts wears away, and the not so sharp cut phones, the ones we've all got have the marks on, because the drills and blades are not sharp enough this needs SORTING PRONTO!

So anyway I got my 5 out and though sod it apple are not going to have any replacements available for months. So I've put up with my marks but some I've seen are real bad. I really hope apple will look into this because people are spending a lot of cash for theses phones, yeah they look great BUT it's up to us when and how we scratch our phones not when they come out of a sealed box from the factory. The more you use your nice shiny new 5 and see the scuffs you think yeah there not so bad. But then the inner iDemon says look there they are look at all those nicks and marks looks like a used phone already and it bugs the **** out of you.

So be wary apple fans out there if your thinking of buying one think twice before you make you decision

And hopefully apple will help all us Disgruntled buyers and have an explanation for all of this.

peace out people thanks for reading
