Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

>Great. Along with everything else, a racist rant.

You're an idiot. My girlfriend and her entire family is black. Though, I don't need to prove this to some disgusting Apple fanboy calling me racist. I said that so people could identify him easier if they have the misfortune of going into that store. But like a typical Apple fanboy, you have to put some irrelevant twist on it to change the meaning of my post. Way to go. You remind me of Fox News.

>You're the one who started with the inane "well it's kind of a long story". In truth, though, it isn't.

It actually was a 20 minute long story that I told to Lawrence. But you weren't there. You have no idea what I told him. Please though, continue drawing conclusions. Lawrence should have nothing but time when it comes to a customer, ESPECIALLY one who drove 350 miles to see him...since, ya know, THAT IS HIS JOB AFTER ALL.

Go on, give me your best reply. I love people who somehow can defend Apple after all this and attack hard loyal paying customers.

Somewhat better news. I called the Apple Store in New Orleans and spoke to a manager for quite a while and told her all about Lawrence. She was unhappy about it to say the least and told me she's going to have a word with him. She then told me if I come in on Tuesday (second time driving 350 miles to this place) that she will have a white SPRINT 64GB iPhone 5 waiting for me.

This isn't how I planned my iPhone 5 experience at all, but here's to hoping for a mint condition phone. Fingers crossed in hopes that it isn't scratched or damaged as well!

Trust me dude I tried everything to reason with these people.

First she tried placing me on the back of the line with the other pre orders for people in New Orleans. Said I'd get my phone November 26nd possibly. I told her this was unacceptable because I'm not pre-ordering at the back of the line. I waited in line 12 hours outside for this phone. I should be at the front of the line. "But sir we have other people waiting". That's interesting, but that doesn't sound like my problem. Sounds like Apple's. After demanding an iPhone from their next shipment she says I can come in Tuesday.

Kind of a lukewarm "win" in my opinion but luckily for them I actually like going to New Orleans.

Im here at an apple store in Temecula CA, Looking at every single black iPhone 5 display (18 iPhone 5's) every one of them have some paint chip or scratch on the bezel, Very sad. Looking at the same amount of white iPhone's I only found maybe 2 at the most with an imperfection. Every one of them is in mint condition. Clean and no dents. Mind you these phones are touched and used by hundreds of curious customers or just kids the walk in to play with them. They all looked in perfect condition to me, And looks a lot more sleeker than the black. (thats probably cause im bored with the black and the white one looks a lot more appealing since its different) As to your question, Yes im paying the 2 year price upfront and ill get refunded when they get my current one. And yes Im allowed to switch to whatever color. Im expecting my white one on Tues so keeping my fingers crossed. And yes this would be my 3rd iPhone 5 and hopefully the last.

My first iphone 5 rattled like one of my daughters toy i got a retail replacement for it and second one had scuff and dings all over, they opened another phone and it was worse, manager told me they couldnt open another phone and to call apple care to get it handled.

Called apple care and they would send me a replacement but putting a 850 hold on my card, i went back to the store and they re opened two other phones that were too worse than the one i had, from there i just decided to return the phone and wait to see what else comes out in the near future....

Its irritating that they insinuate being the best but their products keep coming out with defects, its like buying a car with the paint all scratched.

Hi all,

I got my black iphone 5 one week ago with some nicks on the bezel in Madrid (Spain). Yesterday I had an appointment in the Apple Store. I told the technician I was aware of the situation with the black version specially and asked him whether it was possible to get the white version, and the answer was "i can only exchange it for the same version". In less than 24h I have 6 awful nicks in the area of headset connector.

I have 3 ipod nano, ipad 2, mac book, iphone 4 (i lost it and miss it) and now an iphone 5. This will be my last product from Apple. Steve would not do it!

Regards,

Iván

Yes, I know iPhones should NOT require screen covers or cases. However, at resale time a clean IP sells better. I just got a great case my mine (Body Glove). It comes with (for lack of a better term), underwear. A thin inner soft plastic sleeve that slides into the case. The beauty of the inner glove is that it holds a screen protector tightly, preventing air bubbles from sliding under the screen protector. Best case by far and I've had several of them for my IP4 and my IP4S.

Looks like a decent case, but the colors are horrible. Incipio also makes a dual-layer case that comes in better colors for about $5 more than the Body Glove one you ordered. I'm persoanlly going to go with an Incipio NGP Case (Black) and a Spigen Ultra Crystal Screen Protector.

I can't believe all this talk about people buying cases to prevent further issues with the iPhone 5. What's worse I read in a previous post that the guy was worried about the resale value and so he had to get a case to protect it... really? Use your phone and enjoy it! Don't worry about 'what if'. The iPhone 5 is scratch prone with or without a case! Putting a case on it simply covering up the issues at hand... it's like putting lipstick on a pig... it's still a pig! The iPhone will scratch even with a case... it's been reported all over the net. Don't waste your money on a case and if your iPhone has an issue, call Apple and get them to replace it. The more they replace, the more increased QC will happen. Apple will start to crack down on cost once they see this problem become even more widespread and uncontrollable.

To an extent I agree with you. Personally, I have always used a case on my phones for a couple of reasons. First, because of the obvious protection they provide to my investment (the cost of these smartphones keeps going up) and the fact that often times a quality case will make the phone feel more secure while in hand. These are the two main reasons for me. I do agree with the previous comment about how the iPhone 5 should not REQUIRE a case to prevent daily wear and tear from making your phone look 5 years old in 5 days. But at this point we know what the deal is. It's made of aluminum and it scratches easily. That's the bottom line. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone with the entire glass backing of their iPhone 4/4S shattered because they dropped it. It's a trade-off. I'd take scratches over cracked glass any day of the week. But not right out of the box. When VZW gets me my phone, if it's scratched, I'll handle it accordingly. I have little doubt Apple will help me as it's by now a widespread complaint. As a last note, has anyone ever held the Galaxy S3? It's probably one of the most slippery phones I've ever used. And it's made of plastic. It also doesn't help that it's shaped like an oval stone. Check out some of the drop-tests floating around online. The results aren't pretty. In this day and age a case will go a long way towards ensuring you that your device lasts until your next upgrade.
