Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Wow so many post's about this Issue, Well im in the same boat............Recieved my original iphone 5 from my mobile carrier opened box and on one of the speaker holes the bare metal was exposed. ran around to and f from my carrier to apple finally had enoght and called applecare technical support in Sydney AUS. They took onboard my issue. Sent photos in and was shipped out a Replacement iphone 5 and sent back to them my original...... Once again unboxed iphone 5 and this time Chip on the side next to the sim tray....called up applecare again sent photos of that.....3rd iphone 5 sent out to me anddddddddddd wait for it once again this time a scratch on the aluminium housing. Whats going on Apple i expect a cosmetically perfect phone upon unboxing then if i scratch or chip thats my problem.

After reading on net someone sent an email off to Phil Schiller about the aluminium housing....thought id give it go, didn't get a response from phil but got a response by a person from "Executive Relations " Asia Pacific & Japan.

The case is with this person now....so i wonder what next...all i want is a scratch/scuff/chip/dent free phone out of the box northing more nothing less.

By the way apple are very understanding and supportive....for my inconvenince i received a $150 spend at the apple store online. got my requested stuff very happy about that.

Thought I'd give everyone an update. I convinced the New Orleans Apple store to send me the phone via mail. They overnighted it. Just got the phone an hour ago. At the FedEx office, 3 other people were getting replacement phones. I opened my phone in the car, there's a chip in the aluminum on the back, a scratch on the mirrored edge on the front left, and there's rattling inside the phone, like loose parts. People tell me "all iPhones do this, it's part of the camera man!"

Funny, I have my previous iPhone 5 right next to me and it has NO rattling. Neither did the one in the Sprint store I just looked at.

That's it. I'm 100% done with Apple. Forever. 2 years on Android hating every second of it and now I honestly have to admit, I miss Android. Gonna go get a GS3. Good luck with Apple everyone! 6 iPhone 5s is enough for me.

Sorry to hear that. I'd call Apple one more time and explain things to them before you give up though. Tell them you've been through 6 phones and you're still having issues. Trust me, as a former GS3 owner I will tell you it also has it's pitfalls. Not cosmetically, but in other ways. It's made of a light plastic, so a case isn't optional, but absolutely necessary in my experience. It heats up to incredible temps when charging or with prolonged use. And it's abolustely huge. Like annoyingly huge. Pick your poison I guess. I just think after all the work you've put in to quit now would be foolish. Just make it a point to tell Apple/Sprint you'll be doing no more travelling. AppleCare should send you a preinspected replacement if you request it.

Sorry to hear about your experiance, I bet you screamed on your way home when u saw it, I would of done the same, My white iPhone came in with a small on the back near the bezel. Its not very noticeable but its there. And i refuse to keep it. Now i gotta wait for them to get my last replacement and re order. It wont be for a few days tho 😟

Hello, i just received the shipping confirmation for my first iphone5 ordered online on 1st october.

Fingers crossed for a flawless devide...

do you know if the parcel is shipping directly from china for the online orders?

or shipping from logistics center in europe?

My phone, ordered online, shipped directly from China.

Oh well, i checked. mine is arriving on monday with TNT. Though it's strange because it does give no details from where it's coming. If i check the tnt website, no reference is found at all. so i dont know if it's freshly coming from china or not.

in the meanwhile i realize there are LESS messages complaints these days, do you guys think this is because things are getting better and situation is getting normal?

I am still waiting from my replacement from Apple. Got to wait 5 days.

I sold my iPhone 5 on Craigslist since I couldnt get a refund for it (and after 5 exchanges, all bad). After the Apple Store manager pretty much telling me to deal with the spotty anodization, chipped home button and dirt under the front glass, I just gave up on it.

I reactivated my 4S and am nothing but happy with it.🙂

I hear apple has made quality control stricter at the factories so I may give it another try in the future. The iPhone 5 is amazing, and would be perfect if it werent for those glaring blemishes. it just takes away so much from the device.

Isn't the scuffing problem an inherant flaw in iPhone 5?

If so, and I hope people don't get me wrong, but I've been wondering why some are going to such lengths to get a phone in perfect condition out of the box? And yes, I know it is perfectly reasonable to expect this, but if it's going to scuff up in a couple of weeks, then why go through the pain of getting successive replacements?

Lets not go into this discussion. Why would you buy something new with a flaw?

I would say it is considerably resilient. I always kept it in a case and the only damage on that phone was the damage it came out of the box with. it only scratches easily if out of a case or in a pocket with keys or coins i imagine, but im not sure since I never kept mine without a case.

however, one should be able to keep a phone without a case without having to worry about it.

That's the point of my question, really. And I am speaking from the perspective of someone who is considering puchasing an iPhone 5. If I know it is going to scuff within a couple of weeks of purchase then I have to take that into consideration when deciding whether or not to buy it. If I do decide to purchase it and it comes scuffed, then getting a replacement is only going to delay the inevitable.

With this in mind, if Apple's attempts to improve quality control are limited to trying to ensure that a product which will quickly scuff, does not actually come scuffed out of the box, then that means very little to me.

So my question is, is this liability to scuff an inherant flaw?

And just to be clear, I feel for everyone who bought the iPhone without knowing about this problem. I think they can rightly feel very let down.

Does anyone know if the newly bought iPhones that people are just now receiving are still arriving damaged?

To be honest from what I've seen from the demo units they seem to be pretty durable. It seems the chipping and scratching seem to be located on the chamfered edges but if you get one without a chip or mark as long as you don't drop the phone it should be fine.

The aluminium back is a fragile and can suffer scratches from harder materials such as coins and keys but as long as keep it separate or get a cover on your iphone if you intend to pocket with coins or keys you should be fine.

The iPhone 5 is pretty durable but is like most phones prone to damage if mishandled its just getting one in marked out of the box that seems the biggest issue.
