Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

Same issue with me, I have the white iPhone 5, I had received my replacement from Asurion and it was in near mint condition. A very tiny scuff on the shiny part of the bezel but it wasnt bad. I go and put on a otterbox case and take it off cause i notice dust under screen. And a bigger scuff was right above the charging port!! how it got there idk.

But from the looks of it the shy part of the bezel on the white iPhone is the most sensative part of the phone. It scratches VERY VERY easily. Luckily for me I just called Asurion and made up an issue and they overnited me another one. And I get to keep the chargers and earpods they send with it. So i now own 4 lightning cables and 4 earpods lol and the boxes too. This one I received on Thurs had no scuffing on the bezel. The back bottom left corner had two very tiny nicks on the metal but not visible unless you look closely.

I put on a speck candyshell case and I have not noticed any scuffing on the shiny part of bezel. At least not yet. So yes the design of the phone is very delicate. I wish they would of made it more resistant to scuffs, What a dissapointment

Idk what kind of world you think you live in bucko, but best if you wake up. This whole ordeal could of been avoided had Apple got their act together from begining and this nightmare could of been avoided. You got people here who have returned their devices numerous times and still cant receive a decent device. So if me lying is going to get me a better device so be it!. I could care less to be honest with you. And to be honest I could care less what you think.

Apple has had lots of issues with the launch of the iPhone 5. The cosmetic damage right out of the box is unacceptable no matter how you choose to look at it. And it isn't like it's a handful of devices that shipped in such condirion, it's ALOT. I was lucky enough to get a flawless Week 43 iPhone 5 (Black/16GB), but it has the slight rattle near the camera assembley. It's kind of an annoying issue, but nothing I'm going to exchange the device over. It's actually normal for the iPhone. I checked on a family members 4S and found that while the sound is definiutely less audible, it's still there. Maybe because the 5 uses aluminum instead of glass the sound is amplified? I don't know. Phil Schiller saying the scuffs out of the box are "normal wear and tear" is crazy. Hopefully Tim Cook set him straight on that issue. Maybe the next time Mr. Schiller goes and buys a $50,000 car it comes with scratches on the side of the body, to which the salesman explains away as "normal wear and tear."

I believe I'll return my phone tomorrow and get some other brand. Mine has a little, barely noticable two dots on the side. I wasn't aware of the issue and tried to replace it. It came up that five phones that they showed me were even worse.
After reading all the posts here I'm scared what it would look like in few months time.

I expected Apple would responde with some kind of recall or something....

Everybody should send their phone back and teach them a lesson.

This forum has gotten pretty quiet. But unfortunately, the problem remains in the newer iPhone 5s, according to own own experiences anyway.

I had a flawless iPhone 5. I kept it in a case and treated it very well. However, something really strange started happening to the anodized antenna. The top part of the antenna , on the front of the phone, began to warp. I noticed because the antenna was not flush with the glass on the front anymore. Because of this, there was a gap between the antenna and the glass. It kept getting worse to the point where you could easily tell there was something wrong with the phone's aluminum antenna. In fact, I could see the inside of the phone due to the antenna developing this strange warping. Finally one day, the screen went dead. I sent it to apple and they sent me a replacement. Week 50. This one's screen was fine but the antenna had ragged scratches all around the power button and volume buttons. I took it to an apple store and the genius said he had no problem in replacing it for that. The one he brought out was way worse. In fact, this one also had large pieces of dust under the camera lens. Bad QA. Anyway, he said he could not do another replacement. I told him that this one was way worse than the one I turned in. He said he was sorry but couldn't do anything about it. I sucked it up and took it home with me. As I was putting on a screen protector, I noticed a dead pixel. I took it back to the apple store and got another replacement. This one had something that looked like dried glue on the antenna. It could not be removed. Upon closer inspection, I determined its probably a piece of aluminum that was on the antenna that was stuck to the antenna before being anodized. The piece was anodized on there. It could not be removed without damaging the antenna further. This one also had large pieces of dust underneath the camera lens in addition to the glass around the lens being chipped. I finally have given up and have my iPhone 5 to my fiance. I am using my 4S again and I notice the superior quality of the 4S.

I really like the design of the 5 though and really wish it was better executed.

So after going through three iPhone 5's at this point (16GB/Black), my latest replacement from Apple is having camera issues. The "purple flare" issue to be exact. The first device I ordered through Verizon came with a defective auto-focus out of the box. This was confirmed by a Genius at the local Apple Store the following day. I was initially offered a refurb, which I declined as VZW offers a 14 day "worry free" guarantee. VZW shipped me another device a week later when they had more stock available. I received the new iPhone immediately noticed a rattle near the rear camera area. I understand a little rattle is normal, due to the auto-focus mechanism, but this sounded like a loose coin moving around inside the phone. I initially brushed it off as I was happy to have a phone that worked this time, but eventually the rattling started effecting the use of the phone as I could hear the rattle in the earpiece when I was on a call. Called AppleCare, as I'd blown my exchange through Verizon, and was sent an Express Replacement which I paid $29 to receive. I received my third phone a few days ago and upon using the camera am getting a ton of purple in the upper corners of the photos I'm taking. I used my cell as my camera at a recent family Christmas party and just about all the photos have this distortion happening. It's a joke, really. Is this what Apple deems "normal" according the top brass? More like unacceptable if you ask me. I had the Samsung Galaxy S3 for a few months prior to the iPhone 5, and while I do like the form factor and iOS better than Android, I had no camera or hardware issues to speak of. All coming from a phone people claim feels "cheap" in the hand. Yeah, right. Also, on the back of the phone the metal ring the surrounds the lens itself is well off-center. There's a gap between the beveling of the camera insert and the steel ring. Looks like shoddy work to me. Not what I'd expect from such a highly priced device at all. I'm calling AppleCare tonight to discuss the camera issues. I am not keeping this phone as it stands now. I was promised a device that would do X,Y, and Z, and do it well for that matter. Apple hasn't delivered on that promise so far. Johnny Ive said this phone is as well manufactured as a "finely crafted watch". Oh really? Not from where I'm standing. So far it's been issue after issue and I'm just about done with it.
