Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

i do have scratches on my metal band though and i will be calling apple

Wow looks like everyone is still having problems with the iPhone's thats messed up. Too bad Apple cant get their act together. God only knows what the next iPhone will bring with issues.....

After 5 years with Iphone Im trying a Samsung S3 until this Iphone issue is sorted. Just received our 3rd Ipad (4) in perfect condition from Apple store. I have had a look at a few colleagues Iphone 5 which have been perfect. One kept his Iphone in his pocket and managd to keep it mark free. The fiinsh does seem fairly robust except for the edges which seem prone to marking. I know the fashion is to keep going from lighter to lighter but isnt there a stage where this needs to stop. Our Iphone 4 x 2 seems to have a great robust finish. Yes the glass will crack if I drop it onto a hard surface but most things will. Im not sure how Apple will sort this without another redesign.

I just bought my iPhone 5 today and I was so afraid that it would turn out to be a scratched one.but to my surprise I got a scratch free one.not one scratch.i read this post yesterday and had nightmares of my iPhone having scratches.but now m happy.i bought a full body scratch guard and a bumper.Now my iPhone is safe and scratch free.i guess it's better to check the month of manufacture on the box.on mine it was given November.so I think this is a good batch.Guys do check the box for the manufacturing month just incase you are getting the old flawed batch.

got mine 2 days ago and I was so excited I didn't notice discolored on the black band on the side the phone. I tried returning today but their replacements each had 3-8 nicks on each phone.

At this point I returning for a white.

Great phone but bad bad quality control and poor decision to anodize them with such a thin layer. Actually I loved the glass look and feel. Hopefully the iPhone 5s goes back to all Gorilla glass

Well if it is right out of the box contact apple for cosmetic damage, get a replacement one since the device came that way.

Just a thought instead of complaining about it do something about it.

My iPhone 5 is a Week 43 (C3 Factory/China) black 16GB model, and is cosmetically flawless. The first iPhone VZW sent me was defective out of the box (broken auto-focus), but the replacement is fine. I have no light flare with the camera, no loose battery, no scuffs/dents/nicks, and no dust or dead pixels on the screen. I do, however, have that very faint rattle when setting down the phone on a table, tapping the back, or when shaking it rather vigorously. But to my understanding, most iPhone 5's do it. Go to a store and check out the floor models for verification of this if you desire. I've been told it's the housing of the camera assembly which slightly moves (by design) or even the counterweight in the vibration motor Apple used in the 5. Either way, it's really a non-issue for me. It doesn't affect the fucntion of the device itself in any way. I've had the Galaxy S3 and while it was a good phone, I'll take my iPhone 5 with the slight rattle over it any day. I never noticed a rattle on the S3, but Samsung owners say their camera rattles, too. I can't confirm this, however. To all of you receiving scratched phones out of the box, I say don't settle. You paid for a premium product. Be assertive and contact Apple. If they offer you a refurbished phone as a replacement, turn it down. That's a slap in the face from Apple as far as I'm concerned.

I'm pleased to report that I picked up a Black 32GB iPhone 5 last weekend from a local AT&T store, and it's totally free of scratches & nicks, I see no dust or smudges in the screen or camera lens, and (knock on wood) it is fully functional so far. I did buy AppleCare+ just in case. Interestingly, when I first examined it in the store, I thought it was nicked ... but it turns out there was some dust on it from the packaging.

Coming from the iPhone 4, this new one feels very zippy, and the screen is great. It's funny - the screen doesn't seem larger when I'm using it, but when I look at the iPhone 4 (or a letterboxed app on the iP5) it seems small. As a serious amateur photographer, I am also particularly interested in the camera. I'm glad to see that, while it doesn't rival a DSLR, the quality from the iPhone 5 is a significant step up from the iP4.

Since I was about to commit to another 2 year contract, I did investigate Android and even Windows Phone 8. I almost went for an Android, but for a variety of reasons (won't go into details here as I don't want to start a flame war) I ended up deciding that sticking with iOS was the right choice for me this time around.

The new iPhone 5 is a pleasure to use & I'm glad I went for it.

Mine is a week 40 also cosmetically flawless and it does rattle a tiny bit but all iPhones do. Anyway, there is a strange variance on the back of the phone. The upper glass section on the black is uneven by maybe half a milimeter. I only noticed it because I put on a back protector and it bottled around that area. Check your back glass for evenness. It doesn't bother me at all though as i can only notice it because of the rear film protector

I have now got my third unit and this 1 has a mark by the mute switch, the paint is a little faded by the sim tray and 4 light marks on the back plate. This is a brand new sealed unit and came out of the box this way. I have had an iphone 4 since launch and even after heavy use for about 2 years it is almost spotless. I guess the white iphone 5 would be the better option in the long run but I think the black looks much better.

I cant believe Apple have had such a poor finish on this handset in comparison to the 4/4S. I admit the mirrored finish ipods would only last a day before it would end up with a mark or light scratch but even that looks to have been addressed with the new finish on the latest touch. Im sure when they product tested the new iphones they would have realised how easily they mark and scratch.

Vodafone is allowing me to exchange the handset as its only a few days old but the question is do I risk another iphone or jump ship to.... the S3!

Why doesn't Apple just create a plastic iPhone? Seems like Samsung has no problem with the plastic and its cheap to manufacture.

Like everything else in the world if its going to be used its going to get scratched its inevitable to paint you guys a picture I got my iphone5 yesterday took it out of the box and checked it with a magnifying glass not a mark on it so ok out of the box flawless from there it went right into a case and has been there since took it out of the case today and guess what two small scratches on it same thing happened to my iphone 4 and 4s iPad ipad2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro am I mad that my phone of two days has more scratches on it then my 5 year old car yeah but that's part of life you just have to accept it or buy a cheaper phone

Same thing happened to me, I have the white iPhone and the shiny part of the bezel is the most sensative part of the phone!! I just got a replacement and put it in an otterbox case, Took it out cause i noticed some dust underneath the screen protector and boom! a small scuff that just appeared near the charger port!!! how did it get there!!! It look like a scuff! dont know how it is that they appear on there so fast and without anything touch it ! this is weird no matter much i try to clean it off it wont go away! Oh well....

And one other note those thinking of getting the invisible shield don't bother you will end up with the same results I had the shield for my first iPhone 5 and the same thing happened but thankfully mine was ruled a DOA unit right out of the box because the headphone jack never worked

Yes, thats true invisible shield protects all the parts which are covered and the rest like corners are getting scratches. I put those clear skins on but the very corners of the frame got some scratches and now silver aluminium is visible. My old iphone 3g had clear skin covers and because of the design of the phone it didnt get a single open part which could get a scratch. Even now it looks perfect, same with 3gs. Apple must change the design of the frame it must be flat same level as the screen not sticking out as it is now, so those protective clear skins will fully cover it.
