Went to the Apple store today.  There were people still in line to buy the new iphone 5.  Anyway, they replaced my phone for me, not with a new retail box, but a service phone, which is still a brand new phone.  The first one they opened, looked better than mine, but I still noticed some scuff on the frame, though was not sure if it was adhesive, so I asked them to open another one, which looked good this time, and I just went with it.  I'm a happy camper now!

That's great news #robertofromdiamond bar. I'm hoping the quality will get better with new runs. It's possible that corrective measures were already made before units were shipped and we're just going through "old" stock. Apple's finance guys possibly felt it was cheaper to ship the bad product vs. recalling and going through every box for quality control. Why not let consumers be testers. Most won't complain and accept these flaws. It's terrible and I hate it, but again, possible because of the millions that are being produced. So, in some ways getting the "White box" replacement units might be better than the ones in retail packs. At some point, would be interesting to see if the serial numbers are newer or older on the good vs. bad units.

Hopefully apple would address this issue soon and fix it!!! I live an hour away from an apple store and I would hate to drive there and find the replacement have worst dents than what I have on my iphone now. Which seems to be likely from what I've read so far. Hopefully the next batches would be perfect.

Apple will spend tons of money on design, but they never seem capable of making a phone that doesn't scratch. You always end up haivng to wrap the darn thing. Beautiful phone, but I find it unacceptable that they can not find material that will not scratch or crack. Here I thought the major problem was the software io6 which really fell below the curve.

  • icletus Level 1 Level 1 (60 points)

The other thing is that after today, there will be about 5 miliion phone calls to Apple about this. This is going to be a big problem for Apple.

Agreed but they should not come with scratches and blemishes already on them. My year old iPhone 4S is scratch free. My iphone 5 came nicked and has a blemish. Very small defects , but not acceptable for brand new.  I can get a can of corn that has a dent in it at a discount at grocery store over a can with no blemish. Same should hold true with these. I opted to keep my phone and see how apple responds. To return it to AT&T would incur a restocking fee ,  they have no stock to change it out with and chances are I would get one in worse shape than this one.  A cheap cover to hide the minor scratch will hold me over until this is sorted. Worse case I have apple care on it and can have it replaced at later date when these issues are resolved. In mean time I am enjoying the performance of this device.

Really?  What are they thinking? Funny!  Most successful company on the planet and you think they need to get their s..t together?  Comical.  I'm pretty sure they know what their doing.  However, when you are cranking out millions of phones there are bound to be some bad apples.  Pardon the pun.  I guess I got lucky.  Between me and a buddy we bought 4 phones and not a single issue on any of them.  Not a blip.  Also, as others have pointed out, Apple will exchange until you are happy.  How many other companies can say the same?

Agree its not acceptable, any decent quality control should have picked up this problem from the outset, I can only assume the workers on the production line are blind or have inflicted the damage.

Luckily my 16g black is blemish free, no scratches, dings etc so there is hope, however I have absolutely not faith in the durability of this phone, the anodised  finish will scratch, rub off over time. I'm willing the Otterbox Defender case I ordered the same day I preordered the phone to turn up so I can get the phone cased up and protected. My old 3g I had for 5 years and only shows very minor wear.

I too have the same issue - two small scratches down the right hand side metal edge.  I showed it to the O2 store manager today, he was very sympathetic and said he would exchange it if he had stock! It also won't download music from iTunes!

I preordered mine Sept 18 thru AT&T and its back ordered, which I don't mind much but after reading here about all the problems with the new iPhones I must say I may seriously cancel my order, especially since my 199$ is still "pending." The Galaxy would suit my needs just fine and after seeing the crappy job with quality in person with iPhones coming to family and the other complaints I'm not anxious at all to see mine.

For what it's worth, I think you should go with the Galaxy. I have and use both the iPhone 5 and the S3 on a daily basis. Love both. But for me there's no doubt that the iPhone is my clear pick of the two. So I'm able to put up with these quirks and frustrations that Apple ocassionally puts out. Also a former employee so it's possibly still in my blood.

Don't get me wrong, I'm ****** at production quality issues, but can also understand it's a trade off of elegant design. There's a reason a tank doesn't look like a Ferrari, or that an Otterbox case looks like it does. So we love the light and jewelry design of the glass an aluminum, that's what the trade off is.

But with Apple products, if you love the platform, you can complain, but always end up putting up with it in the end. That's why all of us are here, to gripe about how disatisfied we are and how we hope something will be done. Because, any of us should be able to go and return it and get a refund, but we don't. Why? Because we know there is no alternative. It's illogical and doesn't make sense to most people.

This is why I say that if the S3 is really does suit your needs just fine, I'd say go for it and not worry about all this mess. Realistically, there is little Apple will/can do about this. And "Apple Arrogance" will ensure that they won't have to.

The S3 is a beautiful phone and I must say I love the gadgets and customization you can do on Android. Some people say the S3 is cheap, but I think it's fine. Yes it's plastic, but ironically the plastic is holding up well to nicks. Drop tests aren't as good from what I've read so far.

Last thought is that if you decide to stick with the iPhone, the good news about yours coming late, is that there might be chance that it comes better built. Good luck in either way you go.

First I eat a phone with a lie down the center of the screen during video play back. I return it and when I get home I noticed a nick in the bezel!  Fml!

I don't care...I'm going back tomorrow and I don't care how many boxes they have to open!  Either I walk out with an unblemished phone or a refund.

Checked the local AT&T store here, numerous complaints the iPhone 5's are coming in with physical flaws!, dents, dings, scratches.... enough to convince me that this, with my order now in back order though I preordered to make the switch to the beloved Galaxy SIII, can expand the memory and much more that the iPhone which has NO options. Called AT&T, cancelled my order (to her much surprised voice lol) and purchased my new GS3! its already being shipped tomorrow. Love it.

  • Dadof2Girls Level 3 Level 3 (545 points)

So let me get this straight, as a newbie poster here, your saying you are canceling your iPhone 5 order on post here and a few complaints?  Really?  5 million phones sold, and yes some complaints, and site unseen you cancel and go with a SIII.   Based on your newness to the forums I'd say your a Samsung troll trying to play on a few bad phones.  Between a friend and I, we bought 4 brand new iPhones without a scratch.  A 16gb, two 32gb, and a 64gb.  I guess we just got lucky and went 100% unblemished.

Head back to the Android forum sites pease.

Attention all Apple members....  Debnh is a Samsung troll.  Here is the post....
