Xterm and Terminal Lag

Any ideas why opening a xterm under X11, or Terminal in the Applications/Utilities folder would lag, or occasionally fail? the Terminal.app program will open a window, but may take 30 seconds or more to give me a prompt.

What is the order of files sourced by these terminals? I am running the tcsh shell. I presume /etc/csh.cshrc is being sourced, along with any home directory files .cshrc, and .login, right? What order are these sourced, and what else might contribute to long delays in opening these terminals?

Oh a few other data points: Fink is installed, so I guess the init.csh file could be bogging it down (but this seems excessive), and this is all happening on a iMac G5 running 10.4.x

Thanks

Albion,

Could be any number of thing. do you automount your home directory? Have you checked the log files, console.log and/or system.log either from the command line or using the Console.app?

for the order in which files are accessed, see the "Startup and shutdown" section of the tcsh manpage.

to see what each file is doing. you could put a line like: 'set -xv' in the files. I would only recommend putting it in one file at a time. as it can write a lot of information to the screen. I would start by putting the line, in one of the users files, rather than one that is located in the /etc directory. Also, if the file starts out something like:

#!/bin/tcsh

then put the "set -xv" on the 2nd line in the file.

Hey Bill!
So you do lurk on the forums. Nice. It is comforting to know I have your Mac expertise onboard.

OK, Ill time the init.csh file and see if that is the bad boy. Have you ever tried putting the init.csh stuff in .login? I imagine that requires you to maintain the file because init.csh must get updated periodically by Fink, right? Or is that a generic system file?

Thanks Bill

BTW, Im having fun in the EM world. I am quickly becoming a SPIDER expert (if there is such a thing). It is more quirky than O, if you can believe that.

It cost me $7 to post that last one at the airport in Seattle. I'm back now and happy to help in any small way I can.

Take a look at /sw/bin/init.csh. You'll see that in addition to sticking /sw/bin and /sw/sbin at the head of the path, it sources any file in /sw/etc/profile.d

So if you installed my ccp4 package, you will see it sources the normal file.
