iPhone 5 and "NO SIM CARD INSTALLED" error

I got my iPhone 5 today and everything worked beautifully for 3 hours. I made one phone call and about 10 minutes later when I stepped onto and airplane I noticed the phone saying "NO SIM CARD".

What's going on here??? How can I fix? I've read about this same thing happening to the 4 and 4S. Are those fixes the same for the 5?

I'm on a trip and won't have access to cellular networks unless this is FIXED. I'm kinda ****** since this is a BRAND NEW IPHONE 5.

Someone please help. :-/

Add mine to the list. Opened the phone after gettting back from a trip. ATT, 16 gb. There is no signal where I live, so after activation, I made a call through an ATT MCell. Also sent a text. All worked fine. Set phone aside for 1/2 hour and got the No Sim Card. Restarted, worked. Got message again. Restarted twice and nothing since.

I don't think I will clean the card. The phone should work. It's a bit of a drive to the ATT store, but will go tomorrow if problem persists.

I had the same issue as everyone else with my wife's iPhone 5. I took out the SIM and cleaned it with alcohol, but that did not resolve the issue. While I had the SIM out I noticed that it did not sit flush in the tray, it moved around quite a bit actually. I took it back to Radio Shack and got a new SIM which fit perfectly into the tray, no movement at all. So far so good on the error being gone now.

Well at least AT&T appears to be able to swap out the sim card. When my Sprint iPhone 64 had the same issue I was presented two options -- drive to the nearest Apple store fir a new card (If one was available). That's a four hour round trip (plus wait at the Genius Bar) I couldn't make for five phone less days or have Sprint send me a new phone. It's good and frustrating to see the SIMM card issue is universal and not only my carrier. It's just frustrating that carrier doesn't have the same relationship with Apple to just be able to swap out the sim card.

Same issue with 'NO SIM CARD' Maybe a list of some possible causes would help. Our service is with Verizon in rural Arizona 3G only

1. My wife and I received our iPhone 5's on Friday, September 21. My wife has a black 16Gb phone and no problems.

2. Mine is a white 16Gb. On the morning after I charged it I had the 'NO SIM CARD' error. My wife suggested the paper clip and I just opended the sim door but did not remove it.

3. Sunday nigth I had the phone turned off before I charged it. There was no problem Monday morning.

4. Last night I had the phone on and connected it to the charger.

5. This morning 'NO SIM CARD' I tried many things. Reboot and went outside. First searching, then NO SERVICE then went to NO SIM CARD. Opended SIM port and reset card. No luck. Opened port again and slide out SIM tray. SIM card fell into kitchen utensil drawer. Set card in try, (it is a loose fit) and closed tray. STILL NO LUCK. Finally I tried resetting the tray, went outside and had serivce after about a minute.

6. Still working after 2 hours. I will only recharge now if phone is turned off and see if that is a factor.

7. Nearest Verizon store is over an hour away and an Apple stor is two hours away.

8. A new SIM card may be in my future.

Hope this helps. This is my first iPhone and I am a big fan of Apple. Hope this issue gets resolved. The phone is great otherwise and beats my old Droid hands down.

I believe this is a problem with the SIM card not sitting tightly against the contacts inside the phone. I started getting this error on Sept. 23 and it became worse through the 24, until I could not get the SIM card to be recognized at all. Went to the Apple store, no Genius bar appointments for a day, and they told me to go to AT&T. Instead of fooling with that, I did this and it worked:

I popped the SIM tray out, cleaned the contacts off with my shirt, and then put 3 small pieces of scotch tape on the top (the side without the metal contacts) of the SIM card. (You'll need to trim the tape down so it is no bigger than the SIM card.) I then placed it back in the tray and put the tray back in the phone, and it started working. It's almost been 24 hours, and I've had no further error messages.

I believe this solves the problem because the SIM card is slightly (we're talking micrometres) too thin for the tray/slot. The tape makes it thick enough so that it makes solid contact all the time.

I'm having the same issue. It will correct itself 3/4 of the time by turning the phone off, then back on. I took it to the ATT store (while the no sim message was displaying) and they took out the sim card and put it back it. It didn't work, nor did it work when we turned the phone off and back on.... The local Apple store had no clue, but the call center said I neeeded to update to the latest Itunes and sync the phone. That makes absolutely no sense to me, but I'm going to give it a shot, then replace the sim if that doesn't work...
