iPhone 5 and "NO SIM CARD INSTALLED" error

I got my iPhone 5 today and everything worked beautifully for 3 hours. I made one phone call and about 10 minutes later when I stepped onto and airplane I noticed the phone saying "NO SIM CARD".

What's going on here??? How can I fix? I've read about this same thing happening to the 4 and 4S. Are those fixes the same for the 5?

I'm on a trip and won't have access to cellular networks unless this is FIXED. I'm kinda ****** since this is a BRAND NEW IPHONE 5.

Someone please help. :-/

My Verizon iPhone 5 gave me the error message out of no where. I tried removing the SIM card and re-inserting, etc. and it didn't work. Took it to Verizon and they tried three differant SIM cards and they all gave the same SIM error. Took the phone to Apple, they replaced the phone with a new one and used the same SIM card. Works great. After three SIM cards, it's gotta be the phone.

My wife's Verizon iphone5 (32Gb) got the dreaded message 1 day after installation. Went to Verizon and they were out of SIM cards. They removed and reinserted SIM card and error message persisted. They told us to go to APPLE store for new SIM card. At Apple store the tech removed and reinserted the same SIm card and the SIM message went away and the phone works. Obviously, the SIM/connector has a very small error tolerance. Not sure how long device will continue to function......let's see

Received it for the 2nd time on my 64GB White Verizon Iphone 5. First time called Verizon and a simple remove and "re-seat" fixed the problem. Until today, when (in the middle of Hurricane Sandy of course), it popped up randomly again an hour ago. Called Verizon again, and they have to send me a new SIM, because, you know, they don't stock them locally. Frustrating, especially in this storm, to not have a phone.

My new iphone 5 has had the same issue.

One potential fix is to power the phone off.....pop out the SIM card and wipe it off (remove dust and fingerprints), then re-seat the card carefully in the tray and pop back in.....wait at least 1-2 minutes before putting the SIM card back in.

A verizon rep said this was a software issue in ios6 but it might also be the phone got bumped and if there's any play in the SIM card within the tray while in the phone, it could lose physical contact with the phone and the No SIM Card error message will result.....I've read about this problem elsewhere on the forums.

A new phone is on its way to me for a different reason.....there's a rattle at the top of the phone due to a loose power button. The rattle goes away when you put a small amount of pressure on the button, so it has nothing to do with the auto-lense focus assembly.

Hope these (and other suggestions on the forums) help,

Michael

Thanks.....and you're right, I had never noticed the rattle until the SIM card issue starting happenning.

Maybe it was a combination of the 2 issues that led Apple to agree to send a brand new device....the first person I talked to said I had to send in the device for repair, and use a loaner phone they provided, and then would have to send the loaner back once they either repaired or replaced the phone I purchased.

I wasn't very happy about that, and needed some time to think about what to do......I called back perhaps 90 minutes later, and the next tech person I talked to surpised me by saying that they were going to send me a new device at no charge and all I had to do was send my current device back once the new phone arrived.

In truth I was shocked, but pleasantly so.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new device is cool in terms of the SIM card problem and thanks again for your comments regarding the power button.

Had this problem with my white iPhone5. My husband's black one had no trouble, but mine started with the "NO SIM CARD" message about two weeks after I got the phone. At first, rebooting the phone would cause the SIM card to load, but over the next two weeks, the problem worsened until I was rebooting five and six times a day and eventually even that didn't work. Got a new SIM card today at the Verizon store and all is well. A five minute fix.

Im from Norway and experienced the same problem u have with my iPhone 5, first simcard I puttet in said no sim card and I tought it was something with the phone, wasnt possible to activate, tok the sim out and in, tried reset no luck..

Then I went to local store received a new simcard then it worked perfect for 8hours and then the no simcard popped up again. DId all the things that said on the tutorial for this incident with airplan mode of and on, reset, reset network, take it and out (simcard) , on and off phone, then I tried to reset the factory defaults, still didnt work..

Will go to tomorrow and ask for a new simcard, and send apple email about new phone needed, if problems still stick with the new phone I will just buy a s3..

I have readed about people cutting microsim to nanosim, will that fix the problem maybe?

I bought a Verizon iphone yesterday from an apple store and this morning I woke up to NO SIM. Sadly, this is the only phone I own and now it is unusable, at least until I get out to a store of some sort. So far, I am disappointed in the new iphone. Not only does the sim not show up, but also I have a problem with the phone rattling and the phone clarity in calls has not been great. I have not tested the speaker or the headphones yet. But, I need a phone with a Sim card and I can't switch from verizon, so sadly, my iphone 4 is no longer an option. Would go back in a heartbeat.

The rattling should be taken care of when if they exchange it under warranty. Apparently it's the auto-focus that rattles and they are aware of it. I know that it can be an inconvenience, but just like any other electronic device, nothing is perfect. I have learned by being a "gadget guy" all of these years that you can't expect perfection and it's always better to be nice when you go into the store and ask for a replacment or help of some kind.

I've read that, but if I hold the power switch, the rattling stops, so hopefully they will exchange it without a problem. The other thing I have read about the NO SIM is that the AT&T phones tend to just need a new SIM, but the Verizon, seem to have problems with whatever SIM card is in there and therefore more often than not the phone needs to be replaced. We will see. Hopefully I will be happier with the replacement and I hope they give me no difficulty with replacing it. Considering I have only had it for 19 hours, I think I should be okay.
