    Started happening to me today. Happened about 3 times so far. iOS7 has been working pretty good until now. I upgraded my iPhone 5 the night iOS7 was released. My guess is that this is a technical coordination problem between Apple and various carriers and probably security related.

    Here's and excerpt of how Apple Store visit went (mesage posted Oct 12, 2013):


    "I went last night.  Per the genius, they are aware of the issue at least.  It was escalated to engineering and I am supposed to get an update over the weekend."


    So, if Apple store employee was being honest, Apple is aware of this issue. People should keep pounding the discussion forums that they have the problem, though.

    Mine started yesterday, about 4 times.  One time, I was streaming a podcast and it allowed me to keep streaming even though I supposedly had "No Sim Card Installed." I couldn't do anything else.  It's happened about 4 times already today.  Each time, it needs a hard restart and runs for a few minutes before the error occurs again.

    It apears I fixed it:  removed the Sim Card, cleaned the copper parts with rubbing alcohol (hand sanitizer, actually) and pupped it back in.  No errors, so far.

    My Sim card had fingerprints on it.  I wiped it off and seems to be better.  The card shouldn't have actual fingerprints on it.  That is seriously strange.

    How's it going Rolan Laurens? I'm wondering if this was a fix for you? My sister-in-law is having this issue and I'm going to try to clean her SIM card and see if it fixes it. Wish me luck!

    I'm getting the same issue. My iPhone 5 was fine for about 6 months, now I get  the "No SIM card installed" error every few days. I reboot and I'm good for another couple of days.

    I just began to have this problem. I got my iPhone 5 on AT&T over a year ago (when it was released) and didn't have any problems until just recently. A week ago I noticed that my phone read "No SIM Installed." I did a hard reset on my phone, and that fixed the problem. This evening though, it happened 3 times within an hour. I have never removed the SIM; I have never dropped the phone more than a few inches onto a hard surface; I'm not sure what the deal is. I don't have an Apple store within a couple hours of where I live, but I may have to make a trip soon if the problem persists.

    I think I have found the cause of this - at least in my case. Everytime the phone gets cold the No SIM error occurs. If I allow the phone to warm up and reboot it will be fine. I now remember the first time I noticed this problem (last year in Decwmber) it was also when it was cold. I just had the problem this week - both times when I had left the phone in the car for an extended period while it's about 30 F outside. I'm going to take it into ATT for a new SIM so maybe that permanently fixes the issue. I suspect there is some issue with making a good connection and the cold causes the connection to get worse.

    I recently started getting this error and I'm wondering if it's related to iOS7? I got my 5 when they were released on Verizon and did not have one single issue with the phone until I updated to iOS7. Now I'm having all kinds of issues with the battery life and other things along with getting the No SIM card installed error. Reboot the phone and it works again. Cleaned the SIM card with rubbing alcohol and that seemed to fix the issue for a week or so. Got the No SIM error message three times now since yesterday afternoon. Wondering if a new SIM card would resolve this?

    I've had the same issue and tried that same tricks all with no long term benefit.  I got Verizon to send me a new sim card and "knock on wood" the new card has yet to produce the error.

    So one day I was driving, streaming some music, when it suddenly stopped. I checked my screen and the dreaded "NO SIM CARD INSTALLED" message was on it. Usually a reboot would fix it. Not this time. Not after 12 reboots, 4 SIM card removals and reboots with or without it, cleaning the card with alcohol and throwing it against the wall (not really). Not after restoring the phone next day to factory settings and reinstalling iOS from scratch per Apple's instructions. So, with a dead phone in my hands, I went to Verizon. They replaced the card on the spot when I explained my troubles. My phone has been trouble-free for a month and a half now, which is not exactly a record for me, but still... So my advice is not to wait until you get stuck with a dead phone. Go to your provider and ask for a replacement SIM card.

    Here is a solution that worked for me. My scenario is somewhat different, as my son had an iphone 4s that had to be replaced (I replaced a failed component inside it - never again!). So I bought a cheap but new iphone 5 online, and went into the AT&T store to get them to use their punch to reduce the sim card to the required size.


    Iphone 5 tells him that the sim card is locked, so he went to the AT&T store where they told him that he needed a new sim. This would have required me to go to the store, he couldn't do it himself as the account was in my name.


    Well I searched on line, rebooted the iphone multiple times, cleaned the contacts with rubbing alcohol, all that good stuff. No go, either no sim message, or sim card locked message. Out of curiosity I got out my prehistoric Nokia that takes an enourmous sim card and centred the tiny sim squarely on the contacts. No sim detected. As a final test, I turned the sim card 180 degrees and it worked!


    Turns out that Einstein in the AT&T store had used the punch incorrectly to cut the sim card down to size. When I cut a tiny corner off the sim on the opposite corner of the card from the sloped corner so that it would fit in the iphone 5 card holder and put it in the phone, eureka!


    I bet that many sim cards have been unnecessarily replaced on iphone 5s just because it is not clear to which way to place a bigger sim in the card cutting punch to reduce them to the correct size. This is obviously not a solution for those of you with sporadic drop outs, but might help someone who has had their sim card cut to size by a monkey!

    I could only confirm what didn't help in my case:

    - removing card was working only for 2-3 weeks

    - replacing sim card didn't help

    - rebooting device didn't help neither

    - reseting device - te same story.


    It is widely reported issue for iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPad2, iPad mini after upgrade to IOS 7.0.6 or 7.0.3


    Funny is that in my case only SIM card from not supported by Apple GSM operator works (I've tested about 12 SIMs).

    I'm talking about two devices afected after upgrade to IOS 7.0.3

    It seems that every Apple update is like injecting cancer into your system.  IOS 7 made my phone stop working, Maverick made my phone no longer synch with iTunes, stopped Logic from working correctly, and making my audio interface no longer work.  It hasn't taken this company long to blow all the goodwill that had been built up in the past decade by continuing to push defective software upgrades.  If they stay on this path it will be back to where they were 15 years ago, but with no Jobs to save them.

    I too updated my software to the lastest operating system. I have an Apple Iphone 5 and have not had any problems until the update. The Sim has never been removed and the phone is in a case that will not allow dust or other matter to dirty any contacts -- so that is not an issue. The issue clearly started with the software update.


    There was another issue when I updated my Itunes about a month ago. Itunes was not working after a software update. After some research online, I found the fix for that problem but it wasted a couple hours of my time trying to figure out the problem.


    Apple needs to up their game if they want to stay viable. They are loosing my confidence in their products. I certainly will not be buying any of their stock right now...
