iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

People. The fix to it is simple:

1. Go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset all settings.

2. Run your battery completely flat until the phone turns off

3. Charge completely before using again (2 hrs to be safe)

You will notice battery is better after this. Reset all settings will reset some settings like your wifi and home photo, but you won't lose data.

You also don't have to turn of wifi, LTE etc.

I too am a faithful user like most of us I assume ? having used every version except the very first model so this doesnt deter me as there is nothing else I would use and Im sure the issue will get fixed eventually but in the interim Im not so sure if Im prepared to reset the phone though and lose all of my data, as it would take many many hours to manually restore all of my contacts, addresses, URL's, links etc etc, unless I can resync ? Having to turn off primary functionality to make your phone last past 4 hours is ridiculous though. The explanation about the crashed battery management system caused by restore seems plausible so I guess Im screwed!

Been following this post for the last four or five days and have done the many varying steps that have been listed, but in the end none have not solved my iPhone battery issue. Not only that but my phone runs very hot at times, at around 97 degrees F. Fully charged at 8am this morning and very light use of a couple of hours and by 4pm the phone was at 3%. No Wifi or Blutooth running, and all settings recommened by apple to extend battery life made.

Then at 4:05pm I eventually managed a FOOLPROOF REMEDY TO APPLE iPHONE 5 BATTERY ISSUE. I returned it to the Apple store and got a full refund including Applcare cover. Luckily I still had my iPhone 4 and about twenty minutes later at a Local THREE shop I had my nano sim card in an adaptor and my iPhone 4 up and working (With IOS6). In the last 8 hours its only lost 10% charge compared to my iPhone 5's loosing 93% in the 8 hours before that.

The iPhone 5 problems will obvioulsy all get sorted in the end but to me it shouldn't have happened on such a scale in the first place. I may well get one in the comming months once everything is sorted out, or just might wait to the next generation iPhone. Meantime I will continue waiting patiently for the new iMac and hope it dosn't have any problmes when launched.

This is my first iPhone so I didn't have any backup to restore and set up my phone as new, and I'm having major battery issues. With wifi and Bluetooth off and with a strong LTE signal I lose 1% battery life every 2 minutes just emailing, texting, and surfing. While restoring from backup could be causing the problem for some, it doesn't appear to be the only cause.

vrs626:

look at your Settings > General > Usage

look at the "Time since last full charge"

Are the numbers exactly the same?

look at Settings > General > Diagnostics & Usage > DIagnostics & Usage Data

Do you have a crash in there that starts with awdd_2012 ?

I suspect there is a power manager crash for all of us.

I KNOW this is a brand new phone... something is wrong, but the fix appears to be brute force. Yes, as you said, the cause of the problem could be unrelated... but the solution appears to be the same.

You can either:

1. call apple/visit a genius (they will make you do all these steps)

2. try a full reset as described

3. return the phone and buy something else

PS -- I charged my phone when I got home from work today. My usage/standby numbers since 6pm:

Usage: 47 minutes

Standby: 5 hrs 28 mins

Battery remaining: 92%

I wasn't able to do this yesterday. It appears to be working after all the hoop jumping.

8 days and two iphone 5s later, i give up.

battery time is OK on wifi and standby but if i walk out of the house it is a juicer. 4.5hrs most with little to no use.
it must be cellular that's abusing the battery somehow.
i will be returning the phone on Monday as it's just not practical for me.

i hope the battery improves for everyone here...although it doesn't look like it..

I have gone through 2 iPhone 5's now. Genius Bar swapped my first one out. Second one is worse than first. I lose 1 percent every minute or two, just doing email and phone. Have tried all fixes and have lost patience. There is serious problem with iPhone 5. I am super bummed - have loved every Apple product ever, have 4 Apple computers, 3 iPads and 5 iPhones between me and my wife and kids. Converted my entire business to Apple (server and all) - over 100k easy in Apple products in last 2 years. For the first time, I am about to dump my Apple loyalty and try a different phone. Can't handle the battery issue (and don't get me started in the wifi speed or lack of that I have experienced with iPhone 5). No way Steve would have let this piece of junk go to market with crappy wifi, horrible battery, scratch and wear issues.

... Hoping its a software thing and there is af fix in next few days, otherwise hasty la vista iPhone.

Sick and tired of reading posts and failed fix it's for hours every night. I have put iOS 6 in my iPhone 4 and my sons iPhone 4S, he hasn't had any battery issues. Similar use last Sunday at a ball game and I was left at 31% in 2 hours, while he had 78% left.

The thing that everyone is missing here is the importance of the Facebook App and the Push function under the mail, contacts, and calendar options. 1-Do not set up from icloud 2-Turn Push OFF-Push allows notifications to be sent to your phone nonstop-think about how much activity is going on just in your facebook application alone...and each time your phone gets these pushed to is, it is using power. If you shut off push and rely on fetch (your phone will automatically fetch all push notifications per the settings your set for fetch (I use 15 min because if I get an email I need it within a 15 min timeframe) but instead of constant notifictions being randomly pushed to your phone one after another from all the various apps that make the iphone amazing, if you have it on FETCH it will get everything all at once every 15 minutes or so.

The rate at which you are losing sounds like you set up from icloud or did not condition your battery. Everything else is just an enhancement to make the battery last longer. The screen brightness being set to auto and turned down a bit, facebook shut down or at least the notifications (must be done in the app itself)...Think about what is different btwn IOS5 and IOS6-much more push notifications in the message center, more pushes from facebook, etc. Go fetch and your phone will last a lot longer if you actually do a reset and delete and set up as a new phone. Good luck.

For Apple: I've had the same battery issues everyone's complaining about. My phone lasts 4-6 hours out of the house in NY. However... I was in the caribbean the last few days. There is no LTE/4G where I was - and lo and behold, the iPhone5 all of a sudden behaved even better than my old iPhone 4! It was still fast as **** given the general speed differences and an uncongested 3G network. I wished it would behave just like that in NY (today i "turned off" LTE, but it still says "4G" on the AT&T network and drains the battery quickly, though perhaps less quickly than with LTE on.

As an aside - a network engineer for a carrier was sitting next to me on the plane and was discussing a big iphone bug with his colleagues -- apparently a software bug whereby the phone "says" it's on wifi, but it's actually on the LTE network using huge bandwidth users are being charged for (that's how the carrier figured it out) - something related to using a wi-fi router that doesn't support ip6, but i didn't overhear all the technical details.

Sep 28, 2012 10:50 PM in response to TheWrongStuff

WrongStuff-I agree with you-For whatever reason, a reason I do not understand, I am being told by Apple Care that the issue is in the back-up itself (from icloud) not in the way the phone is set up once it gets restored. I reset as a new phone and was getting 5 hours talk time vs. 1.5 immediatley. Then I started optimizing settings and tried to see if I got a better result. I didn't really to speak of. Shutting off push gave me about an extra 20 min by fetching every 15 min instead. Then I shut down Facebook, and I got to 6 hours. Today I shut off LTE just for the heck of it to see if that was making a difference. It didn't for me. I have a lot going on on my phone between all my apps and the amount of talking I do...13,000 min plus a month...Today I got my 8 hours...but that was with LTE off...Now I'm back to 5-6 with my email and notifications every 15 min, but I did delete my facebook app. It's good for me. I'm sticking a morphie case on it anyway but once apple comes out with a patch it will be nice to restore as a iphone device
