iPhone 5 keyboard problem - typing issue 'Q s' & 'P s'

I'm pretty sure this is a software issue...it seems that if I have my finger on the P in portrait orientation in a spot that doesn't register (typically dead center on the key or slightly to the right of it), and I keep my finger in the same spot while rotating the phone to landscape so that the letter p is now part of the space bar, the phone has no problem picking up a spacebar depress, and I can move even closer to the edge of the screen and have it still work.

I tried a complete restore and it still didn't fix the issue. I tried a few store models as well and they were the same.

I'm not sure if this is a software issue.

As you can see, I have no problem drawing on the left edge. But on the right edge, I just can't draw on it. The right edge doesn't show the drawing at all. I used my index finger for this drawing.

No wonder people have problems typing the letter "p".

Apple, please fix it.

I don't think that the color pencil app has been upgraded to work 100% with the iphone 5. I just tried the app "draw" and had no problem filling in the right side of the screen. Perhaps the operating system has similar touch screen issues as the color pencil app when in portrait mode

Did the restore. Didn't fix the problem. They said if the restore didn't work to call & request a replacement (while still under warranty) even though I purchased the phone thru Verizon. Went to Apple Store to exchange. The tech had huge fingers, and had no problem with making the P and backspace keys work. I handed him my stylus so he could see what I was experiencing. He agreed the right side was not sensitive to the middle of the P. So, he exchanged it. The new one is better, though about 1 mm from both sides is not sensitive. But, it's good enough to work most of the time. The tech at the store & Apple Support said not many people are calling to report this problem or exchange phones because of the keyboard.

I had an iPhone 4 previously and then switched to Samsung Galaxy Note and Note II. This week I sold my Note II and bought an iPhone 5. Pretty sour feeling spending almost double the money on the iPhone - only to have these kind of problems.

It seems this could be a software problem. Like in the posts above, I first tried Color Pencil and saw the same problem: about 3 millimeter on the right edge in portrait mode is not usable. But then trying Draw, I can draw all the way to the right edge but about one millimeter not reachable on left edge!

Not sure if the drawing applications are the best way to test the touchscreen as a lot have not been upgraded to iphone 5 yet. I purchased a stylus and tested the exact location of where the p key will register. It seems that anything to the right of dead center on the 'P' key will not cause it to register. I thought one of the store models was registering the 'P' key better than my phone when using my finger, but I brought the same stylus tested it there with the same results....P will only register dead center and to the left of the key....The Q is the same-dead center or to the right of the key. I tested 3 store models and they were all like this. However, I can easily slide the screen up and down (such as in the photo app) while the stylus is far to the edge of the screen, meaning that the touchscreen certainly can register at the extreme edges. You can also slide left to right on the top level of the keyboard, and the P will not release until you are far to the edge of the screen. So, perhaps the keyboard can be updated to allow key presses a little closer to the edge. Until then, I'm getting used to it...love the iphone in all other aspects.

Agree with Odawgg. As sad as it sounds, I'm getting used to the unresponsive P and Q. I think this is what happens to most of the iPhone 5 users. We get used to it and don't complain.

I learn to hit the very precise spot for P and Q to register.

And update:

I installed Color Pencil on my iPod Touch (4th generation). And it actually behaves the same way: 2-3 millimeter on the right edge is unavailable! So nothing conclusive that tells me this is a hardware issue. Hopefully the 6.1 update will improve the responsiveness of the touch screen driver.

Yep. I noticed this problem too, immediately. In protrait mode for me, it's not only the P's and Q's that are affected. I swear, I am making at least double the typos I used to on my iPhone 4, even with the "I", "A" and "O" keys. This isn't just a minor annoyance. It makes me feel like the phone is not complete and they did a sloppy job regarding keyboard clibration. I really hope it is just a software issue. I was about to call Apple and complain + get a replacement, but it sounds as though every iPhone 5 is affected.

6.1 feels better to me. Anyone else notice a change after updating? The P key feels a lot better, but maybe it's just me...

I think you may be right ya know. That or else I've gotten used to the issue and type extra carefully and watch the words as I type them.

(On a separate note, I'd love haptic response to feel the keyboard under my thumbs!!)

It does seem better to me as well...however I may just be used to it now. Pqpqpqpqpqpqpqpqpqpqpq

I tryied update 6.1 and it slightly correct the problem with P and Backspace, but erasing with the button what's typed is very hard - it racts at 4th-5th fingertip. Still right side of tuch is unreachable - very obvious when try to press page links (when minimized) at forums.

Returned 3 times to my carrier and every thime they send me the phone restored and ""passed all Apple test to functionality"...whatever they are!
So I don't know - is there a problem or not??

Ever since getting my iPhone 5 (have had the original, 3G, and 4) I've noticed my typing isn't as accurate. I couldn't understand what the problem was. But last night I saw that every time I hit the M key, the last letter in my message was deleted. In otherwords, hitting the M key really hit the backspace key. Sigh.

How do you tell if you have a Sharp icd?

Baought my new Iphone 5 today, and I experience this problem with latest ios 6.1.4, very annoying to have such and expensive phone with that problem, as Julia2013 showed it really feels like small edge of the screen is not responding, I will contact my provider who i baught the phone from see what they can do, but is anyone solved this issue?
