All APple has sait so far:

Well, now you do know something. Nobody here has any secret information as to when a new product will be available. If Apple hasn't announced it, no one here will know.
Mid October is what I have been hearing. Ignore stedman1 and thefiend. They have been drinking hater-ade.

CodeBlu is right. Now I see Buy Now instead of Pre-order which means it is going to be in stores in less than a week!
Why be like that you came to this site to help people yet you wasted site space just to be a complete jerk for no good reason at all, he was just asking for info on the iPod release date. @stedman1 what is your reason for posting? Was it just to belittle op? That person asked you for no secret info just a release date. Calm down you guys do not have to be so rude, if you are on this site to help well than help but don't be so mean about it.
Well the apple store hasn't giving an exact date but they say they have sent them for shipping already so the most would be in about two weeks Hope I answered your question ;)
Everyone, it is now shipping. Keep watch on your order status. US/Canada orders appear to be first. Europe still pending. Pre-orders from Sept will arrive first, then those from early this month. Retail orders may arrive at the same time, if not before Online orders from early OCT. I orderded mine Oct 2.

Japan, which happens to be 13 hours ahead of New york. See this "unboxing video" that another Apple user posted a link to;
