Turn by Turn directions no voice using Bluetooth

I would venture to say that the 2012 Prius has not got an update for the IOS 7...Talk to the Prius people.

BTW, I think it is a typical arrogant Apple response: They change their software and then FORCE everyone else to change theirs - PERIOD!

If Microsoft (or Android) behaved the same there would have been an uproar from the "smart" Aplles about how the big fella is throwing his weight around. A lawsuit would follow that would net Apple some Billions...

I always hated Apple and I still don't know how I ended up with an iPhone (blame my wife :-)

I am having the same issue. Tried using Apple Maps while listening to the radio and no turn by turn navigation was heard. I will have to go back to using Waze or Google Maps. A shame since Apple seem to have really improved their maps application (other than the bluetooth support).

@radamo: You did not mention which iPhone/OS you have.

BTW, my experience has been that the iPhone voice for maps (both Apple and Google) works thru the car stereo ONLY when connected thru Bluetooth - not with USB or "plug-in" selection from the Aux. menu.

I'm not familiar with Waze, but as I said before both Apple Maps and Google Maps work fine as long as the iPhone is connected/set on Bluetooth. NOT with USB or "plug-in" selection from the Aux. menu.

I can have the radio OFF, or if it's playing the music level goes down and the instructions come thru loud and clear - plus phone calls come in and out.

iPhone 4s, iOS 7.0.4 - Ford Sync System (2012)

I have a 2007 Tundra. Google Maps voice turn by turn works fine over bluetooth to the speaker system, as does Waz. iMaps voice turn by turn is not using bluetooth and therefore cannot be heard over the speaker system on my Tundra. However, Siri, and iphone calls work just fine. Only iMaps voice turn by turn does not work. I am using an iPhone 5s, with V 7.0.4 - the latest software.

I have iphone 4 and Google maps, too. I was experiencing the exact problem you described and I just couldn't fiture out how to make this work consistently.

Then I noticed that, everytime I had my phone on before getting in the car, the navigation worked and I could hear the directions through the car speakers. It worked flawlessly even when I was listening to music or getting phone calls.

It, however, did not work when the phone was off when I got in the car, or when the phone was turned off and then turned back on in the car. Nothing would come out of the car speakers or even the phone speakers! No sound, period!

One trick I figured out is, once I get in the car, I turn on the phone and then turn off the bluetooth on the phone and then turn it back on. When you do this, your bluetooth on the car will be disconnected. Connect the bluetooth/phone on the car and then turn on your Google maps on your phone The navigation works fine and I can hear the directions throught the car speakers.

To make the long story short, turn off the bluetooth on your phone and then turn it back on while in the car. Then connect the phone/bluetooth on your car.

I think the bottom line is (for all iphones/car combinations) that you make sure your connection between the iPhone and the car stereo is thru BLUETOOTH - not with any aother method that is available in your system/combination (USB or "plug-in" for exaample).

I checked Bluetooth connections. Even turned things off and on. After checking, deleting and reinstalling and re-pairing, The Bluetooth connection is pared properly to my Tundra. Only iMaps voice prompts do not come over the speaker system. Google maps does. So does any Siri voice. My guess is that iMaps - and iMaps alone does not activate Bluetooth when voice prompts are made.

Check your iPhone using only iMaps to see if you can hear the direction voice prompts over the speaker. I have several friends with iPhone 5 and 5s - and none of them hear iMaps voice prompts either.

I heard of the opposite, but never this one, i.e. iMaps don't work thru Bluetooth...

Mine (iPhone 4s with Ford Sync) works well with both.

I usually use the G-Maps.

iMaps has done another Apple trick: They let you access your (google) contacts, but they won't allow to do same when using GMaps...Or is it a a Google oversight? I doubt it.

If that was an MS trick, there would be riots all over the world...but cute, little (?) Apple can do as it pleases (Think of the Apple plug vs. the Androit USB...that was an FCC ruling for all phones, but Apple found their reasons to be exempt, like "our iPhone is a tablet"!)

I talked to Apple support and here is the fix, at least for Ford Sync. I am using a 5s with a 2011 F150 and Apple maps. iPhone plugged into vehicle USB, Bluetooth connected, and maps open. Bring up Siri and in bottom right is Bluetooth/volume symbols. Tap symbols, then select Sync and toggle on "use HCP". You will now get turn by turn voice directions thru the vehicle stereo. I tested while using satellite radio and it cut out radio, gave directions and then radio cut back in. Truck display showed a call in progress but I believe phone is not actually making a call. Hope this helps everyone. Thank you to Roman at Apple support.

Just a question: Do you mean the iPhone must be plugged in AND connected thru Bluetooth or it must be one OR the other??

BTW, a few weeks ago, I rented a 2013 Ford Escape with Sync and my iPhone 4s connected very easily (press of a button) and the Apple maps worked w/o any problem (not plugged-in). I noticed the "call in progress" message, but it disappeared once I hit the END button (touch screen). To their credit, deleting my phone (when I returned the scar) was a snap!

BTW2, the "call in progress" message appears with my 2012 Ford Edge with Synk. It does send a panic message, but I think it is harmless.

Still, another problem that giants like Apple and Ford in this case, expects US, the amateur computer geniuses to solve! AND we are the paying customers!!!

Bottom line seems to be that Apple Maps does not work with all Bluetooth systems (if you're using Bluetooth, you should NOT have to use the USB cable - that's just ludicrous). Apple Maps audio works works fine w/ my motorcycle helmet Bluetooth system, just not my car system. It works just fine for the phone in the car. Google Maps and Waze work just fine w/o a cable in the car. It works for some but not for all.

Got the same problem with my mini r56 (2008) bluetooth system. Bit with iOS 7.1 apple changed the settings on the map. Now when you're on navigation mode tap the sound setting bottom right and you'll find a menu selecting whether you want no sound, low, normal or high sound and whether you want the directions on the iPhone or the car's bluetooth system. You obviously have to pair your mobile with your cars bluetooth first. This changes everything. Now music stops, you hear the directions and music continues to play. Finally. :)

Just an update to my original post: As noted above, the bluetooth/volume settings are located in the bottom right in the maps application, just touch there if they are not visible. The toggle selection is "Turn on HFP" and select Sync for your source. My truck always gave directions when connected to bluetooth, it was only when the cable was plugged in that I had problems. If using the cable, you will always have to select Sync as your source every time you reconnect to the cable, phone defaults to Dock when it is reconnected. This can be done by opening Siri and touching bluetooth symbol in bottom right corner. Then give her your command and you're off to the races. My sincere apologies for any confusion I may have caused.

Again, these procedures work for Ford Sync with up to date software. Cheers.

For all you Prius owners I thought I'd share my experience. I have an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.1.1. I use two navigation apps...Apple Maps and Garmin USA. I have a 2011 Prius. That was the last year BEFORE they introduced the Entune system. I don't know what my Nav system is called. My iPhone is connected to the Prius Nav system via bluetooth...I don't use USB.

I usually listen to Sirius XM in the car and want to have turn by turn voice directions cut in when necessary.

With Apple Maps, I have observed 2 modes. I have no idea what series of events causes one instead of the other.

Mode 1: The turn by turn voice directions cut in. The screen on the Nav system does nothing...it continues to show the map. The voice directions finish and Sirius XM returns. Smooth.

Mode 2: The map screen disappears and the previously mentioned "call in progress" screen appears. The voice directions are given. The "call in progress" screen disappears and the map screen reappears. When this "call in progress" mode occurs I notice that a small couple second delay before I hear the directions. I believe this is the time it takes to activate that "call in progress" mode. This may not seem like a big deal, but in a busy city that couple second delay can mean missing your turn. It's a pain and I wish I could figure out how to always enjoy Mode 1.

With Garmin USA, I can get turn by turn voice directions only via Mode 2. Again, not bad...but that couple second delay can be problematic.

Why do these cars employ this "call in progress" functionality? Any insights.

BTW, if you're wondering, the Nav system on my Prius works fine. So, why do I bother with my iPhone? Well, I don't have an extensive address book entered into my Nav System. So, to get somewhere I often have to manually enter the address first. On my iPhone, I have been conscientious about entering the address of almost every person and business in my contacts app. Both Apple Maps and Garmin USA can access my contacts for the addresses. That makes things easier when I am rushed or just feeling lazy. Having said that, the Prius turn by turn voice directions work flawlessly and with no delay.
