iPhone 5 short battery life?

I was lucky and got my new phone yesterday, but the battery barely lasts. After checking my email for about 30 seconds i lose 2%. I made sure nothing was running in the background, but the drain is worse than my 3GS I just upgraded from. Any suggestions?

after reading the posts about the cellulaur issues being reported by bellatone and mtcbctgt i remembered that when iOS6 was first announced one of the new fatures was "WiFi + cellular".

this feature was meant to supplement weak WiFi signals and would allow hand-off to cellular if the phone lost the WiFi connection while sending or receiving data.

the feature was present on the final GM developer release of iOS6 but is not in the public release.

For anyone still having activesync or battery problems I have a potential fix:

I've had two issues lately.

First, my battery life was draining at an insane rate. iPhone5 lasted about 3-4 hours before absolutely dead from a full charge. LTE disabled, WiFi disabled, icloud turned off...about as power efficient as I could make it, and I was hardly using it at all. I was losing 1% batt every 2-4 minutes.

I solved this problem by removing my work account (Exchange Activesync) from my mail accounts. Obviously I couldn't stay like that for very long, so after confirming it stemmed the battery issue, I tried to add it back. Did a bunch of different methods and tests, and what ended up working for me was:

  1. Remove ALL accounts (Had Exchange, gmail, icloud)
  2. hard reset the phone.
  3. After it came back up, I reset the Network Settings just for good measure.
  4. In Mail control panel, make sure "Default Account" doesn't have an old mail account listed (option may be not even present if you've removed all accounts, but I was having issues earlier where even though I'd removed accounts, it kept listing them in the Default Account/Calendar sections
  5. Add the Account
  6. Open Mail
  7. It actually took a min or two to start populating data, I didn't think it had worked, so give it a few minutes.

My battery life issue seems to be fixed, and my ActiveSync account works again. I've been off the charge for about 4h 40m now, and battery is at 90%, and that's with moderate usage on LTE.

Hopefully this helps out anyone having similar issues. For what it's worth, I removed/readded my Exchange account several times and it never worked until I had removed all accounts (my iCloud account was the last one to be removed), so if possible, just remove everything.

I have NOT added my iCloud account back yet, but will be doing this now to see if any issues reappear.

After a call to apple care, I was told to go to my store and have the phone replaced.

Made my appointment and explained I have both the battery drain issue and wifi issue. They concentrated on the battery issue only but swapped my phone with a replacement.

I am STILL having wifi AND battery issues so it must be a software related issue and hopefully apple updates the software and fixes this.

My battery from the replacement phone was at 80% at 11am. It's now 3:12pm and the battery is 19%!!

Also, my wifi works fast - WHEN IT DOESN'T GET DISCONNECTED. Once I put the device to sleep it drops the wifi and I have to go back into settings and select my network again.

This needs to be resolved soon. I shouldn't be exchanging phones 2 times a week. Lol

Was having the same battery problems until I performed the following:

  1. backed up my data on ios6 so that i could restore it
  2. performed a DFU reset.
  3. set up the phone as a new phone instead of restoring.
  4. after going through the prompts, i manually restored from the most recent backup (step 1) via iTunes
  5. went into settings / general / reset reset all settings
  6. i then performed a full battery charge and the battery life is MUCH better now.

For example, now I'm:

8:50 AM 97%

10:36 AM 94%

12:33 AM 90%

I've only lost around 7% in 4 hours with no applications running on LTE. Before I was losing 2-5% every 15-20 mins with no applications running on LTE!!!! 😠

BTW: I also turned off the settings for Stock and Weather on the Notifications Screen.

If you follow these steps, you'll probably receive the same results.

I followed some of the suggestions, like stopping some of the location services (in particular notifications and passbook). It made a difference, but I was still loosing 15 to 20% of the battery life an hour. I called apple. They said that I could swap it out, but the stores do not have any to swap right now. So, I decided to do a restore and see what happens. Will keep you posted.
