iPhone 5 short battery life?

I was lucky and got my new phone yesterday, but the battery barely lasts. After checking my email for about 30 seconds i lose 2%. I made sure nothing was running in the background, but the drain is worse than my 3GS I just upgraded from. Any suggestions?

Hello guys, I haven exciting news. I have discovered that the Facebook integration is what was causing the issue. I turned off I cloud calender under settings-->iCloud calender and it helped so much. So turn off safari, calender and passbook under ICloud. I use to get 6 hours max battery but today, I am sitting at 16 hours stand by and 4 hours usage and I am at 42%. Very exciting. Good luck

So, I've read three pages of this thread on Wi-Fi and lost 7% of battery.

Went to bed at 1am with 100% battery, woke up at 530am with 62%!

As I wanted to see how much battery just being on standby used, I turned off Wi-Fi and closed all apps and it still ran down this quickly!

It's not good at all. My other half has a 5 though and it lasts her 2-3 days, losing 2-3% on an 8 hour sleep :-S

It's most certainly a more universal problem than is being addressed by Apple. "Defective, to address you I am in Kingston and I am getting WAY less bars on all functions now than I was getting on my iphone 4 which always had a strong signal. For me it's not just LTE. I'm not getting over two bars on wifi or 3g either and I always used to. LTE struggles and switches so much back to 3g it's not worth having it here to me so far.

Then there is the horribly battery drain issue. For what I paid for this phone I am really disgusted. I've had two iphones before this, I have a Macbook and a Macbook Pro. There have been very, very minor issues with those products but, this is ridiculous.

I really don't have time to try nine thousand things before my phone works right and why on earth should we have to turn off features on this phone for the battery life to operate properly. I have turned off everything I could though it irks me to have to do so. I would like to see a response from Apple on this. There are pages here on the problem and many, many more on other websites. It's clearly a universal issue with the iphone 5. VERY disappointed.

I know everyone is having different results trying various things, but for me so far the best battery saving tip is turning off LTE. I went from losing 50% battery life in less than 3 hours under heavy usage to going more than 24 between charges on average usage as a test. Hopefully some fixes/tweaks are released soon, but in the mean time that for me was the easiest and quickest way to get positive results.

Yes, I'm going to turn off LTE but, then...what was the reason to upgrade to this phone again? It's lighter than I thought it would be and I'm not certain I like that as much as the substantial feel of the 4. There are scratching issues with the metal part on the back...both of those things are minor. The screen is beautiful as it usually always is on Apple products but, it wasn't a bad screen on the 4 by any stretch of the imagination.

One of the main features advertised on the 5's roll out was LTE AND longer battery life. Take away the LTE and this 5 is not going to be faster in any case than the 4 in most cases. I hate to say this, I've talked MANY people into buying Apple products including my sister who I almost have talked into a new Macbook Pro but, the 5 so far to me is a failure in too many ways. So far what we have is "turn off this and turn off that and turn off LTE." What was it again that made this upgrade worth the cost? Pfffffft! If I could get a 4S with at least 32 gigs I'd take my 5 back today.

Cuse, it seems about what I had before with the 4. Okay, pretty good but, not the extraordinary times touted with this phone. Seems a bit of bait and switch even though there is a battery guide...I'd be happy if I was getting what you are though compared to what I'm getting now AND if the phone would stop dropping LTE going to 3g and back so that I lose my connection altogether and then also have issues with wifi. :S

I hope this is all a big software issue and not some issue with the phones hardware. I don't mind spending what I spent on a phone like this but, I DO mind when it doesn't work without hours of tinkering and updates as advertised. Seems I could've done just as well with a "lessor" phone over all so far. We'll see how this is addressed I suppose.

I just returned my two I phone 5'S . We have been struggling for three days with the battery issue. We have watched tons of forums and discussion.

We have spent hours in the apple store changing settings and running diagnostics. We have restored the phone twice and brought back no apps just contact calendar and email. Still no change in battery life. It goes runs dosn about 1% every 2 minutes. It is sooooo not worth my time. I am back to my 4S. We are soo sad that some folks have no battery issues? The apple tech guy at genius bar state " There is nothing wrong with your battery " . Humm then why after 2 hours does my phone battery say 1% and then turn off. RETURN YOUR IPHONE 5 UNTIL THEY FIX THIS ?? GOOD LUCK ALL...

I have been getting great battery life...Here is my screen from yesterday...I am in a building that has 2G only AT&T, so for 11 hours of this time my phone is constantly searching for 3G signal (draining batt), while only have 2G..WIFI is on, LTE was off. Two email accounts, one is .ME (Push) and the other is a Hotmail (Fetch). During this time I used Mapquest GPS for 40 min...I dont use iCloud for backups, Safari Sync is off since people have reported it being an issue.

Diff iPhone 5, 2nd Scenario...AT&T LTE is ON in and LTE area. .ME and Exchange (Push) / WiFi On.

My Observation: I feel that iMessage causes severe batt drops for no reason..Do a Restore As New..start fresh..perform some full battery depletions and charge up to 100%...

Oct 3, 2012 6:28 AM in response to whitewater2

I've already done a restore as new and am in the process of doing some drains and recharging as I usually do when I set up for my battery. The restore as new was enough of a pita. I've turned off a ton of functions..you think it's imessage? There has been a lot of speculation about which function is causing the drain so quickly. We'll see. I still think for over 800 dollars there should be ZERO issues out of the box on a brand new phone. Could of been a brilliant upgrade.

Oct 3, 2012 6:52 AM in response to RAFREEB

rafreeb,

- I have noticed that iMessage drained my battery 7 % on 3 19 minute tests, being on WiFi and in a "4G" area...This would be something an update should fix.

- BlueTooth drains pretty fast also..Again update should fix..

Other than that, I dont see many other issues (unless there is a hardware issue). I think problems people are having with iOS 6 features that many people are activating that use a lot of the phone...

- Location Tracking has always been the biggest killer of battery, some programs request it and use it when not needed.

- Turning on every program for notifications when really not needed for a lot of programs

- Having push on for all email accounts when not needed

- Using iCloud for backup of the phone, will have to send all the new changes often

- LTE on in an Non-LTE area, constantly making it search for the towers.

That is exactly what I did. If my iPhone 4 on IO6 has no problems then I don't see why I should have a problem with the iPhone 5. I returned my 64GB iPhone 5 and will wait until they sort out the iPhone 5 problems before even considering buying one again. Lucky for me I still had my iPhone 4 to fall back on and my carrier even gave me a sim card adaptor so didn't have to swap sims. Have to admint I might now go for the white version now that I have seen it in the flesh, so maybe it was fate that I had the problmes.
