iPhone 5 short battery life?

I was lucky and got my new phone yesterday, but the battery barely lasts. After checking my email for about 30 seconds i lose 2%. I made sure nothing was running in the background, but the drain is worse than my 3GS I just upgraded from. Any suggestions?

I believe the article. I believe it has always been an issue searching for towers, whether it was with my iPhone 4 or my girls 4S, it is constantly searching 2G/3G/ (and now) HSPA/LTE..That is why I was asking about your signal strength. I have 2G only, always searching for 3G/HSPA and draining my battery in the process. And my 2G drops out multiple times a day. ( work on the bottom floor and we have ATT repeaters installed). It may just be draining faster with the iPhone 5 or iOS6 specifically.

I really think this is signal related.

Yesterday I charged my phone during the day at work because it was down to 30% with 2 hours use. Left with a full charge and played with the phone a lot that evening, web, email, games. Had 55% left with just under 4 hours use. So I was impressed.

This morning I went to my dentist, where there is very poor 3G service so the phone switched from edge to "4g" on and off. With 22 minutes use I was at 80%. Stand by on this was about 90 minutes.

So I am thinking software issue when in poor AT&T service areas. It needs a tweak on how it polls for towers.

I'm from Belgium and have perfect coverage all day.

I tried everything including restore, no notifications, delete icloud, no location services etc.

Battery still dead in 5 hours max.

This blows.

Especially considering there is NO Apple centre in Belgium, so it's not like I can hop in to have my phone checked.

Booooo Apple.

Hey guys, I was following this thread for awhile before I sucked it up and went to the Apple store.

I tried a DFU restore twice, did not do anything. My question is to you guys, how many of you guys have an exchange account instead of a regular email account? This was causing my battery drain. I deleted the exchange account and added a regular account, and my battery life is pretty good now. I can get 4-8 hours of useage + 16 hours standby.

The reason for this is that exchange accounts are constantly streaming data to your phone, as opposed to the push/fetch of the gmail account, which only does it in instantaneous intervals.

Hope this helps.

kokonutz,

I have a regular email account and push services for it are off. It seems there are lots of things causing battery drain. Practically every function the phone is supposed to perform has been mentioned as a potential problem. Who knows. Glad it worked out for you. I just don't have time to drive an hour and a half each way to the nearest Apple store to speak with someone in person. Not to mention the money it will cost me to do that. But for those of you with an exchange email maybe kokonutz suggestion will help you some.

So i finally figured out some of the issues i was facing.

My original factory unlocked iphone 5 was terrible. I tried 3 things, Restore, then DFU restore and finally go to the apple store which they had none to replace mine with. So i called up apple canada and they shipped me a new one with in 24 hours of calling, amazingly fast shipping. I shipped my old one back the same day and setup my new iphone 5 as a new phone. Same battery issues, only getting about 3-4 hours on full charge. So last night i tried one last thing before i try calling for a 3rd phone.

I deleted the ISPW file off my macbook pro and then just did a normal restore of iOS 6 on the new iphone 5. I then setup as a new phone and added my email accounts one and a time again. I also found turning off LTE since its still weak in Victoria BC. Turned off Bluetooth as i dont use it that much and Personal Hotspot off too. The brighness to about 90% bright. After all this i took my phone off charger at 6:00am and by noon and was over 70% with 2:10 minutes of usage. Im now at 34% with 4:03 hours of usage now.

Try this out and see if it works for any of you.

Thanks, I will do that. I'm going to call Apple Canada if your suggestion doesn't work and ask for a new phone and go from there. I tested my phone today by letting it recharge from zero and not using it at all. It went down thirty percent on standby without me even using the phone at all. I hope your suggestion works and I'm glad it did for you. We're doing an awful lot of work here just to get a phone with acceptable battery life. I'm in Kingston, Ontario and though we are told we have LTE, it is only two bars tops and always wants to jump back and forth between LTE and 3g. I turned that off permanently. Virgin uses Bell's towers here and I'm not that far from the tower but the LTE here is not yet ready for prime time I don't think. Shouldn't have been sold as usable really.

Hi Guys,

I'm having the same problem as everyone. Just to confirm some articles I've read about the issue, how many of you guys have restored your old iPhone settings to the iPhone 5, instead of setting it as a new device? The word is, this might be causing the problem. I've reset my phone and set it as a new device, the battery has improved but not hugely.

I reset my phone as a new device (DFU restore). Didn't change much for battery life... As soon as I start browsing the web using either 3G or LTE, battery drains about 1% every 2-3 minutes and phone also gets very hot. This phone is not very useful to me in this state. Nowhere near my iPhone 4 (which also has iOS 6 installed).

Oct 7, 2012 2:36 PM in response to Kelly Siech

There are a lot of different factors that can be causing this for different people. I went through this personally with the iPhone 4s launch and the best thing to do is to turn off the things you don't use and leave on only the things you are. (Afterall, we wouldn't buy the phone if we didn't want to be able to use some of its great features.)

I have updated my guide from the 4s launch to be applicable for the iPhone 5 and it can be found here. I have attempted to make a pragmatic guide that is realistic about the changes you can make to improve battery life on the iPhone 5. While this guide isn't guaranteed to work for everybody (not everybody's situation is exactly the same), it has worked very well for me with my own iPhone 5.

I thought it would be worth sharing. I have done some further experimentation with battery life (using Carat as an scientific instrument of sorts) and, for those who have turned Push off like I have in my experiment, this may be a major contributor to poor battery life for whatever reason. Will others look into it to see if what I have found hold true?
