iPhone 5 short battery life?

I was lucky and got my new phone yesterday, but the battery barely lasts. After checking my email for about 30 seconds i lose 2%. I made sure nothing was running in the background, but the drain is worse than my 3GS I just upgraded from. Any suggestions?

I solved it at least for me. I noticed the same thing going from iphone 3 to iPhone 4:

- If you restored from a backup, delete any corporate Exchange account and re-create it. That got my battery back to "normal"

- Also noticed Maps must have a flaw. After using it, you need to kill/shut down because it kills battery running on background. I'm sure Apple will solve this with a software release.

Hope this helps at least a few... I'm happy now 2 days ago phone lasted 5 hours. Yesterday it lasted the whole day and had 30% left.

I do have an Exchange account that I restored from backup. I have deleted it, and the full cycle charge will be complete in 10 minutes. I will report back if my battery issues continue after trying these two fixes.

You're certainly not alone. I found your post while doing a search to figure out why my iPhone 5 dies so quickly in comparison to my 4S. Those suggestions which keep being repeatedly posted about how to save battery life are not the answer. Sure, following those suggestions with save you a little battery life...but this thing is draining quickly!! I am an electronics technician an know enough about batteries and battery drainage to know that's not the solution. There is more of an issue here that needs to be fixed by Apple...not the end user. Yes you should fully charge and fully drain your battery a few times but this is ridiculous. My battery dropped 8% in the time I spent reading this thread and responding. I'm not pleased and will wait a few days to see if Apple owns it.

I also got my phone in the mail on friday and i got it around 2:30pm but i had to go back to work. When i got off at 5 i came home to activate it and back it up then started playing with my new phone. I then noticed my battery was draining like my 4 was and i've had that phone for 2 years. By 9:00pm my battery was at 75%, this phone is too new for the battery to drain like that! What's going on!?

Its a new phone, and as such requires some battery calibration.

Do the following:

Do 3 full charges and discharges (until the iPhone switches itself off)

And then once per month do 1 full charge and discharge, as per Apple's recommendation.

Try the following tips:

Do 3 full charges and discharges (basically let the iPhone run down till it switches its self off). This calibrates the battery and in doing so makes the battery life better. Then once per month do 1 complete discharge (I usually set an on going reminder on my iPhone to remind me to do it).

Go into Settings/General/About, scroll down until you see Diagnostic & Usage, touch this and on the next screen choose DON'T SEND. This stops reports and diagnostic data been sent to Apple (which is not needed and in doing so uses less battery).

Go into Settings/ scroll down until you see Privacy, on the next screen touch Location Services, on the next screen scroll down to the bottom until you see System Services, touch this:

Switch off Compass Calibration, Diagnostic & Usage, Genius For Apps, Location Based iAds, Mobile Network Search, Setting Time Zone, Traffic.

While still on this screen scroll down a little bit further and switch on Status Bar Icon (this option makes you aware of any app that is using location services, you are made aware of this by a little purple arrow to the right of the battery level). Locations services use the in built GPS that is in the iPhone. A lot of apps use GPS/location services (such as the camera app), but if you notice that the little purple arrow is constantly on (which would run the battery down a lot) then having the Switch On Status Bar Icon switched on, this setting would make you aware of the fact much earlier.

Touchscreen problems, finger recognition problems, battery life problems, wi-fi problems, scratches on a new phone problems... I'm an Apple fan and i have to say that the numerous amount of problems that multiple people are having convinces me that the iPhone 5 was (to an extent) a "rushed project".... Even though we waited for months... anyone else feel the same?

Where did you have scratches? I did notice my WiFi disconnect once and I run a Linksys EA4500 router. My battery life has much improved after doing a TRUE full cycle charge, which takes about 30 minutes longer after the battery has reached 100% after the discharge. But this camera rattle has me most annoyed as none of my previous iPhones ever did that.
