iPhone 5 short battery life?

I was lucky and got my new phone yesterday, but the battery barely lasts. After checking my email for about 30 seconds i lose 2%. I made sure nothing was running in the background, but the drain is worse than my 3GS I just upgraded from. Any suggestions?

Yes it does help. I started doing this and my battery life improved a lot. But you're right, it's not the main problem. I have only a few apps open as I type this. I've been browsing and checking email for about ten or fifteen minutes and its already dropped 3%. But that's an improvement from when I first got it. However, when I go to work we get almost no signal in the building and unless I turn on airplane mode my battery drops like a rock. I know what's helped my phone and what hasn't. Closing apps does help, but its not the cure by any means.

Sir, I am incredibly pleased for you that closing your open Apps has helped your battery life. I would be interested to know by how much this has actually helped. Whilst I agree that not running Apps will naturally save battery life, I always close apps after using them. Despite this, my iphone 5 battery life is appalling. As previously mentioned I need to charge my iphone 5 battery 3 times per day. This is when it simply sits idle on my desk at work. It is horrific, and quite frankly annoying me to the point of no return. I urge apple to fix my £570 iphone 5 that runs out of battery before I have eaten my lunch.

I like many others also have this problem. I have an iphone 4S and had no problems until after the last update. My battery literally drains before my eyes. I took the phone to an Apple store and since it is still under Apple Care Warranty they replaced it. The tech said if hat didn't fix the problem it must be a software problem and I would have to wipe the phone clean and start again. I was so excited to think that my problem was solved.I was not thrilled to find that he problem still existed on this new phone. I backed up the phone to my computer( previously had been backed up to the Cloud). I restored the phone which cleared all info. Again I thought the problem was solved but found after a few hours that the battery had dropped to abut 20%. I did more research and found the suggestion that e-mail accounts/contacts could be corrupt and the steps were to delete all e-mail accounts; shut down and reopen the phone and start again. I did that and now see that the battery has dropped to 84% ( from 93%). The 84% has held for a while so again hoping this has resolved the problem. With this many people suddenly having the same issue though you gotta believe this is a software problem and a fix from Apple is needed!

Mine seems to have not changed much. I hardly used for iPhone5 yesterday and by the end of the day I was down to 29% battery remaining from a fully charged battery. When I was using iMessage I could literally see the battery draining by 1% per minute. Don't have much notifications, badges or apps running in the background either. Not very impressed with this latest iOS.

Traveler123. I completely agree with your statements above. I am having to do so many thing to last me through a day with battery that it is almost useless having an iPhone. I have the first generation iPad, with tons of notifications and badges on, and constantly using it. Terrific battery! I charge it problem once every 2-3 days. But iPhone5 (most likely the iOS6) is proving rediculous! Apple better fix this soon...

@raviwala: When iPhone says 100% charged, it is 100% charged but not fully charged. With the use of the "Battery Doctor" app, there's still room for "trickle" charge and if this is full, it is accurately "fully charged". This is the correct one charge cycle when you completely drain your phone after this. I think Apple has to fix this issue, in which the 100% indicator should not show that number if the "trickle" charge is not full. Hope this helps.

@DOM Q Whilst I apreciate this might be a problem for you, it is a small problem in the greater scheme of things with regards to Iphone 5 battery life problems. We are seeing our batteries of the Iphone 5 drain to 30% after 4 hours sitting idle on our desks at work after updating to IOS 6.0.2 . This is a major poblem for the Iphone 5 community and something that I know is swaying a lot of my colleagues from not purchasing an Iphone 5. They are choosing competitors phones instead over the Iphone 5 simply because of the widely talked about Iphone 5 battery problems.

iPhone 5 battery is a joke compared to my 4. 13 days into new phone and retuned to Verizon and made them replace with new one out of the box. I still cannot believe how poorly this i5 battery life is performing. And yes, I am on top of App management, don't use bluetooth, get the fact that the 4G tech is a bit more demanding on power consumption. After SIM card reset and full IOS restore and reinstall of apps still same disappointing drainage. I really hope that this is software fixable and not a reflection on the i5 hardware build. Am I missing something here?

My iPhone 5 worked fine for the first month that I had it, I would use it regularly throughout the day and I would be at about 50% by the end of a 12 hour work day. Now for some unknown reason after 2 hours the phone went from 100% to 23%. Performing a settings reset helped only minimally. After charging from 23% to 100% with battery doctor I was again back down to 50% in four hours with minimal use. This makes the phone nearly unusable. If this continues I am headed to the Apple store, but it sounds like they really don't have an answer for this other than a new phone which doesn't solve the problem. Interestly the problem started on 6.0.1 and not first reading these posts I upgraded to 6.0.2. Turning off wifi and bluetooth doesn't seem like an appropriate fix as those are both features of the phone that I use often.
