Same thing here on 3 iMacs: late 2009, mid 2010 and mid 2012. Each one froze while backing up. Started to back up shortly after upgrading to 10.7.5 then froze. I removed drive and tried with another computer --- same thing happened. After the first computer failed, I went on and repeated the process with other 2 all with the same results. Called AppleCare to let them know about problem. They said the engineers were aware of the problem. When I asked if the tech had any personal experience, he said yes with his computer. I asked how he fixed his and he said he didn't yet. So I too encourage anyone with the problem to take the time to call Apple so they understand the magnitude of this problem. I spent a total of 5 or 6 hours messing with this and finally unplugged the backup drive and will resort to drag and drop my documents folder a couple of times a week on my portable drive until they figure it out.

I too had this problem. Spotlight kept stating that it will take 3 days to finish and never actually finished. After trying many suggestions from different Apple support threads, I finally figured out which file was the culprit for my system.

Try going to your user preferences folder ~username/Library/preferences. If you have a file named "com.apple.spotlight.plist.lockfile", remove it. Then reboot and try indexing again.

Spotlight then began to execute normally and within a couple hours, indexed my 1TB drive.

Hi all,

I have the same problem after updating on 10.7.5, too. Hope Apple will fix this asap, cause I can't do any time machine backups any longer and I need my macbook 13" (late 2009) for work!

After reindexing like dexcribed above (in spotlight tool), checking the HDD and repair all bad entries and making PRAM reset, nothiung helped. I got 25 Weeks of indexing time....

Apple have massive problems with their software at the moment, also with iOS6 !
