iMac won't return from snooze...

So now I have 10.8.2, and Yay! Way to go Apple, You've fixed Parental Controls, for the most part anyway...

However, now you've bust something else! Since installing it, I've had to hard reset my iMac 8 or so times over the past 4 days. Totally unacceptable.

So, the symptoms are, iMac is at the Login screen (I run multiple user accounts, 1 or more will be logged in), leave it a few hours, come back and try to wake up the iMac (hit keyboard, shake mouse etc...). The screen either remains black, or it has been known to wake up and go grey.

I can hear the hard drive being accessed. Sometimes I will even be streaming music from iTunes to remote Airport Express speakers, the music will continue, the remote application will be responsive (reasonably) just the darn iMac will not wake up to be used and has had to be power cycled, something I Hate doing with a passion, especially when I can hear the drive being accessed.

Looking in the Console, prior to the shutdown I always have entries like this:

What is this lsboxd and is it related to this issue?

I've repaired permissions - nothing was in need of repair.

I've turned off iTunes WiFi sync as it was causing endless problems on 10.6 iTunes, I don't think it's related but at least I know it's not that causing it!

I've read issues where CPU usage has gone up to high levels with this "Unable to talk to lsboxd" in the Console, but haven't found anything actually informative that could fix the problem. It MAY be that I have hit this same issue - I could hear the disk moving... I couldn't get any response, it's possibly something chewing up the CPU in a really bad way...

I am despairing at Apple recently, their QA is appalling. It's take to 10.8.2 to finally get the Parental stuff sorted out (kinda), but hey look, here's Facebook integration.. yeah, let's integrate more "features" and not actually get the bugs ironed out....

I have had a similar problem but sometimes the iMac goes to sleep in the middle of using it. The problem persisted after an install of ML and complete reformaat of the hard drive. Safe boot seems to have quelled the lsboxd messages and I reset parameter (NVRAM) old school by letting it chime 5 times. It has now been 48 hours without failure since the NVRAM reset. Also, updated my tablet driver as I found that as a possible cause on another thread.

I'm having the same exact issue since 10.8.2 on my 2009 24" iMac. Reinstalled Mt. Lion this weekend and there is no improvement. Black screen, fans running, and light on trackball is on, but I cannot interact with the machine. I can log in via SSH and load averages are very high with all the time as kernel/system time, not a particular process. Hard reset seems to be the only way to work around it.

My problem survived the upgrade from Lion to ML. The NVRAM resets would suppress the problem for several days but that corrollary to Murphy's Law would kick in just as you needed to get something done in a hurry. I took it into the Apple store because of the hard drive recall and had them swap the hard drive. I migrated the user and data back onto the new hard drive. Then I had to upgrade the system install the Apple store had just done.

It's been a week now with no recurrence of the sudden blackouts. You might check and see if your iMac is elegible for a new hard drive.

I have had this freezes too, for me it started with the 10.8.2 update.
On every mac I use Little Snitch without any problem, but after much and time consuming elimination I have uninstalled Little Snitch version 3.0.2 and my freezes are completely gone.

So at least this means there is an incompatibility with LS and 10.8.2.

The freezes occurred at least once a day, it doesn't necessarily mean this is the solution for everyone, but I am a 100% sure this was my problem. I filed a bug report to Obdev.at, but haven't heard a word ..

If you have LS 3.0.2 installed you could uninstall and try for yourself, download the installer to uninstall, I choose the uninstall option and kept my settings, so I can uninstall without loosing my settings.

What also could help is to inspect the contents of /Library/LaunchAgents and Library/LaunchDaemons for outdated or obsolete files, but be carefull and make sure you know what you are doing.

Uninstall, clean the caches (with Cocktail, Onyx or TinkerTool) and reboot.

Besides all this the real cause of these freezes must be caused by the 10.8.2 update, as so many people suffer from these freezes.
10.8.2 is one of the worst "updates" I have seen ..
