iMessages fail to send

I know there are a ton of problems with iMessages, but I thought I'd put this one in as Googling the console error gets me nothing.

If I dont send a message for a while. The first message that I send always fails. Re-trying to send the message will work and I'll be fine again until I leave messages alone for a while and then it starts over. Also, when in this mode, I receive no messages either. It seems I have to 'wake it up' and re-establish a connection all the time to send or recive. I've reported it to Apple, but wondered if anyone here could help.....?

I get the following errors in my console.

22/09/2012 21:40:26.407 Messages[340]: [Warning] Updating typing guid on IMMessage from xxxxxxxxxx to xxxxxxxxxxxx

I'm having the same problem. Except I'm in the US on Comcast in Florida.

I am also having luck with connection through a VPN. (http://strongvpn.com) iMessages seem to send normally every time when connected to the VPN.

Any ideas of what I can do to make this work without the vpn? (or really wherever I'm conneted)

I'm a competent tester... if someone has suggestions for things for me to try.

Thanks.

Hi,

If it works using an VPN but not elsewhere then most likely it is a routing issue.

Make sure your own device is using UPnP in the router to open the ports.

Also make sure it is not doing Port Forwarding or Port Triggering at the same time as it will conflict on some devices.

Many of the ports listed in the Table I posted earlier in this Thread are above port 1024.

Ports below this number tend to be open by default to allow Web Browsing an Mail app.

Depending where else you use your computer you may find they have not opened the required ports.

As a follow-up to this, I started at a new office last week and began experiencing this issue again (first message failing and working ok after that). We have the same modem/router at the office as I have at home, so I figured a quick change to wifi settings and I'd be all set. Well, it didn't solve the problem this time. Then I rememembered that at home I'd also set the timezone on my modem/router at the same time. I gave that a try at the office and.. voila!. problem solved. No failed messages since then.

So, check that your router has the correct date/time/timezone... at least that's another thing to check if you're having this issue.

I've been getting this too ever since a Virgin Superhub was installed after my basic virgin modem died. This problem is also happening with Dreamweaver. Basically if I dont send an iMessage or file via FTP for around five minutes, the 'tunnel' collapses. After the collapse, the first message/file attempt fails but opens the tunnel back up again so immediate consecutive attempts succeed instantly unless left idle again for 5 mins. Virgin "tech support" tried to blame the software but I have reinstalled the OS and all other software since. Messages come into my iphone ok but usually arrive in the osx messages app around 5-10 minutes later. Again, they come in instantly if I have used iMessage in the last five mins. My iphone is on the same router as my mac though, which confuses me. Maybe someone out there can give a reason for this, like maybe the 2 devices use different methods. Same problem also occurs when I ethernet into the router and set it to modem mode. Nothing has changed apart from the modem/router so it's def something to do with the superhub. I've also booted in modem mode with all other devices disconnected. Both problems are huge for me as I'm a web developer and use iMessage throughout the day. I'm upgrading to a superhub 2 next week, which will hopefully resolve this if it's built differently but I'm not hopeful. People on other forums said they have left Virgin as a result of the dreamweaver/superhub problem, probably because their tech support don't generaly understand what they should be troubleshooting.

Hi Rich,

Sorry to hear you're having issues still (I think you left a message on my blog a while back). I thought that had fixed the problem but it still occurs for me.

I've been doing a bit of research into the issue with another chap, drop me an email and I'll forward you over the details of the stuff we've tried.

You can email me through my website 🙂

Thanks,

Joe
