My phone and my wife's phone both have the rattling noise when the phone is finger tapped near the top. I went to the genius bar and was told that it's normal and related to the camera autofocusing and lens apparati. The genuis said every one of their replacement stock made the same noise. Every model on display also did when I checked them.

I had my 4 and 4S cased about 99.9% of the time and don't know if they made the noises or not, as I no longer have them...

Well I have been using my white iphone for a week, yesterday I noticed the rattling sound when I gently tap near the logo, then noticed volume and standby button r little loose, not sure if the loose buttons causing the rattling noise. This is my second iphone 5 , I had to replace my first one due a defect screen.

Looks like lot of folks having this issue, :( , it's so annoying, when ever I place it on the table , I can hear the rattling noise. Hopefully my 2 nd replacement won't have this issue.

Come on Apple, don't loose quality over quantiy.

Just got back from the Philadelphia Walnut store. Genius took my 5 apart, couldn't find anything loose. She said she asked "everyone" else upstairs and their's all did it too. Mine rattles when I tap on the keyboard. Genius said it's normal. After further thought I'm headed back to the store...to return it on principal.

Apple: This is not the quality we pay extra for.

Every iphone 5 I have tapped have the same problem. Just some are louder.

But it shouldn't be something the customers should take only because it is common.

Except the rattling noise, my iphone 5 also have colour streaks across the keyboard when typing in the app store sometimes!

I have just got an exchange from Vodafone and the rattling noise is still there, just not as loud as last one. I haven't tried the keyboard yet. But even the problems are still there with the new one, I don't expect anything better with any other new iphone 5 anymore.

One thing I am sure at this moment is that my next phone won't be an iphone if the android build a model with better quality.

After 3 genius bar visits, Apple replaced my phone. The new one has a small fraction of the rattling noise that the first exhibited. While they said everything was normal, they replaced it for "customer peace of mind." I appreciated that very much, as I've always had excellent customer service from Apple.

Perhaps they could see via my Apple ID that I'm also an excellent customer (2 Macs, 2 of every version of the iPhone, iPad 2, Apple TV, Airport Extreme) and didn't want to tick me off?

just got my iphone 5 and that was the first thing i noticed. thought it was the sleep/power button (since it seems loose too), but when i hold it down and shake the phone i still hear hear it. read lots of things online, ppl are saying this is normal due to lenses within the camera, others are saying loose battery. going to apple store tomorrow to see whats up

I went yesterday. The Genius was great about it. He said its normal, and some were worse than others. He pulled out his 4s and it sounded like a rattle snake lol. But he said he would replace if I'd like. He pulled a couple and let me inspect them. The first was about the same. The second had a better power button. Now when I tap with my finger on the side, I don't hear which was really bothering me. However, it I lightly tap just underneath the camera area, I can still hear a faint rattle. I'm over it at this point. I was just glad apple was willing to help me out.

If you are still under apples 30 day return policy you go in and tell you have every to return the phone as many times as you want until your happy. I did so and they brought me 3 replacements all came scratched I denied everyone I now am waiting on my local apple store to get a shipment of my model and do a full swap and if the new one is scratched they told me I can go through as many as I want till they get one not scratched or having a wiggly wake button or volume buttons.

Yea I went too and they said the rattle was normal, I also checked out about 12 floor models and wax and every one of them had the same noise by the cam. I wast offered an exchange tho, ad my power button also doesn't feel 100%. But I do have to say my battery is amazing, ad I've heard lots of stories about batt life sucking for ppl. So all in all I'm happy with the phone, they did mention that we have a year warranty (for those of us who don't have the extra 100$ for apple care) for any hardware issues, so if anything happens with power button or camera they will replace it no prob.

I Agree with a lot of points made in this forum.

My iphone 5 rattles as well, near the back by the camera and at the bottom in front, been told by the arrogant Genuis staff, that the back rattle is normal which is pretty poor. If I wanted a noisy phone that sounded plasticy I would have bought a Samsung. Every time I place it down I hear the rattle. $800 is a lot of money.

The rattling noise that when you tap lightly on the top of the iphone 5 is the vibrator unit, vibrator unit is actually a tiny motor attached to a piece of off-set metal, it makes your phone "shaky" when is activated, because it design to "shake", so when it is not "shaking", it is loose, that's why you will hear the rattling noise.

To confirm it, you will hear the same thing on the iphone4 (GSM) when tap on top adjacent to the camera. For iphone4s, you tap somewhere just below the micro-sim slot, you will hear that noise too. iphone4 has a typical "motor" looking vibrator, while iphone4s has a rounded, coin-battery looking vibrator.

Hope this helps!
