Does anyone else have a problem with their brand new iphone 5 making a small but annoying rattling sound when lightly shaken?

The rattling nose actually exist on iPhone4 all the way to iPhone5 (not tested on 5S), and on iPads too. The concern for me, now, is not about the little "noise" that looks like things are loosen inside, its actually when you are making voice call, holding up the phone, and talking with certain tone, e.g. ummmm. huhhhh. The rattling causes to vibrate (harmonic sound) and it makes you hear sounds like a "sand dancing on a speaker", and that is annoying. You really have to talk in certain pitch (usually low voice) in order to create it. And harder to detect when you have the noise cancellation like iPhone5. It is hard to show to thouse Geniuses at Apple.

It would be easier to reproduce the problem is when I am talking to someone on 4S, in a quiet area.

I got the phone exchange without any proof at the end, but my new one, it still happen from time to time. So I kinda live with it.

Okay so i have this problem with my brand new iphone 5s, i have come to the conclusion that it is the top button for me. To check if this is the same for you, hold the top button in and shake at the same time, if the noise is gone/slightly less then this is the problem. Personally i don't think it is dangerous and i don't think that the phone is broken. It is probably due to the design of the phone. hope this helped!!! 🙂

HI folks..... How are you?...

There is nothing to worry: Lets come to the topic...

I bought 5S on 26-12-2014 and i too experienced the same problem when i tap the phone on backside top portion. So i went to Apple service center and they told me that there is nothing to worry and this is because the design of the camera lens is not fixed and it can move. To allow the lens to move, they didnt give any support to that. This causing the weird sound......

Lets enjoy the phone......

Btw, i am from Pune,India.

Okay, so here is my story about the rattling noise. I have been told the same thing by numerous Apple employees, both Genius Bar and Apple care, that the noise is either caused by the loose home or volume buttons or camera lens, like stated by Statheesh. However, my whole problem that if any other electronic device that you own had a similar rattling noise, would you not try to have it remedied? That is exactly what I did.

I started out by buying my iPhone 5s on the first day it was released, being the loyal iPhone customer. However, about a month later I get a message from Apple that I need to turn my phone in for a recall. Note that I did not want to turn my phone in, but I was told that if I did not by a certain date (about a month, I believe) that my warranty would be terminated. Now, understand this, when I took my phone in, I did not get it replaced with a new iPhone, I got a "service" phone, which is Apple's way of saying "refurbished." So, I was stuck with a REFURBISHED phone a month after I had paid for a BRAND NEW phone.

Now, about six months later the rattling noise occurs. I checked my friend's iPhone 5, and his did NOT rattle at all, and he has had it for over year and a half. That caused me to take my iPhone 5s into the Genius Bar. Three replacements later, and the current refurbished iPhone that I have is the worst one yet. It rattled straight from the get go.

That caused me to call Apple Care. Four phone calls and a week later, and they tell me that because I the noise is not detrimental to the operation of the phone, that I CANNOT get a new iPhone 5s, in the shrink-wrapped white box with a new charger and headphones, which is what I wanted when the recalled my phone in the first place. So, Apple does NOT WANT to give me a new phone, even though they say the "can't." I have been a loyal iPhone customer since the 3GS, and this will be my last iPhone. I had to get my old iPhone 5 replaced because of the horrible home button issue, and now I am on my 4th iPhone 5s. The quality has really dropped off since the death of Steve Jobs, and my next phone will probably be the Samsung Galaxy 5s. Believe me, I do not want to leave the iPhone line, since everything I have is geared towards them, such as iTunes, all my purchases. But my frustration is to the end of the limit.

If you read all this, I thank you, and this is my first time ever posting on the internet. However, this has to stop. If this can sway one person away from Apple products, I will be satisfied. APPLE IS HORRIBLE!!! I know I will probably get tons of replies to quit my bellyaching, and that is fine. However, I believe that when you pay $400 for a cell phone you should get your money's worth, and I feel I have not. Again, thank you for your time.

omg. I had never noticed this. Now it's going to drive me crazy. and the rattle. I used to only notice it when setting the phone down. now that I'm shaking it and it sounds like a kid's toy THATs driving me nuts too.

The thing about the rattle that I don't understand, is that i'm 100% certain it didn't rattle when I first got it. It started rattling after I dropped it a couple feet (in a case) onto a wood floor. So, it seems like something is getting knocked loose and apple doesn't want to spend the money to make it so that doesn't happen.

Very frustrating - Is there no other solution that stop buying apple iphones ? Mine rattles - i phone 5 - When you push down on the screen it stops rattling for a while - Its that lose battery that then re adheres itself and the rattling goes away - It is so irritating to find out one bought a piece of JUNK for lots of money - Not a quality constructed and engineered item as advertised ! So what can be done ? Avoid apple products - It does not seem like Apple is concerned about quality control - It made me think what countries make good cars ? China ? Korea ? Japan ? Germany ? Iphone is made in China so what do you expect German or Japan build quality ? Korean cars are better quality than Chinese cars - Go figure why Samsung such a thorn in apples side - I do not like Samsung but it appears Apple is a downgrade on a Samsung product - In fact Sony looks like a Strong choice at this point - It such a pity as the intimacy between apple hardware and software is a plus point the other manufacturers do not have - But it does not over rule CHEAP hardware - My apple charger never worked from day one - Apple never replaced or repaired It -It was cheaper to buy a knock off charge for cheap than attempt addressing the issue with apple and at the end of the day and the cheap knock off of the original apple item works better and is more reliable than the original apple item - Go figure ! Steve is gone - Apple is following him !
