Does anyone else have a problem with their brand new iphone 5 making a small but annoying rattling sound when lightly shaken?

Yes I have the same problem also here..when I tap my iPhone 5 with the other hand there is rattle sound that I can hear..after 2 days of buying iPhone only I have noticed..
Same probleme here. Except mine got louder and louder, now im at the point where i cant have the volume over 3 bars while in a call, because it vibrates like ****. it's really annoying. i have my iphone for 2 months now, and noticed it few days after i received it. i googled and stopped worrying about it.
it started to get really loud after i tried the "Custom VIbration" feature.
Problem for me is: I have a Sector 5 Aluminum Bumper, and it scratched the top and right egde of the Anodized Aluminum of my Iphone.
at the moment i have absolutely no time to get to a genius bar, but when i can i will report whats the result.
I also got an iPhone 5 at apple store this month. It does still have this rattle noise near the camera.
Seems like there is no solution for this until now so we will need to live with it (until we change to another brand or type of mobile)..
I just regret to change from iphone 4s to 5 ;((

noticed this rattling sound after a week of getiting my ip5.. I hope that loose thing which i presume is the vibrator wont fall off in the phone itself and cause other problems.
I don't normally respond or add to posts, but having dealt with the rattling issue as well, I wanted to share my experience. I bought an iphone 5 (64 GB, white) about 4 months ago. I began to notice a rattle when the phone was shaken. This week I took the phone to the Apple store. I was informed that the battery was "loose". The service guy took the phone to the back and, according to him, was placed in a vice-like device. I guess the idea was to compress the phone so that the battery would once again stick to whatever adhesive was inside the phone. Problem solved. Rattle disappeared....until the next morning. I made a second appointment at the Apple store. This time they gave me an entirely new phone. So, don't let others tell you that a rattle is normal and that you should just live with it.
This discussion has been helpful, thanks. I do need clarity - is this something that will be replaced under warranty??? I am experiencing a rattle sound each time I am ON a call. It sounds like the speaker is vibrating. I just got this new iphone last week, and I have been using a lifeproof case. No, it is not a notification going off, I know the difference. It is a noise that is unacceptable though, very distracting during my business calls.
I got the phone from Sprint. Does anyone know if I can just take back to them for a new one or what that process likely entails??
Thanks for your help.
The sound most of you are experiencing is from the vibration motor. It has a part that moves up and down. It's just a part of the phone and is natural.
Hey guys, I know this thread is a little old, but I do have a definitive conclusion I wanted to post here for those that are curious. I first noticed this in my 4S, it still persists in my 5 and it's happened on every 4S/5 I've tested (friends' and at Apple Stores). I never had an iPhone 4, but someone commented that it was not present, or at least less noticeable in the iPhone 4. The following components were suggested as culprits:
Vibration Motor:
This one didn't make much sense to me. Yes, there was some evidence pointing to it being a "floating" part and since it moves, it does seem possible. However, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 have nearly identical vibration motors, while the 4S had a completely different "coin cell" style motor. Since the problem exists in the 4S and 5, but not in the 4, this seemed to be an unlikely option.
Image Stabilization:
This one was suggested, but since iPhones use digital, not optical image stabalizers (no moving parts), it wasn't the problem.
Lenses/Auto-Focus:
Someone suggested that the lenses and/or auto-focus might be the problem. This makes more sense, they said (and several people including myself confirmed) that the rattling noise is gone or greatly reduced when the camera is focused as close as possible. In addition, the camera was switch between the 4 and 4S, while the camera remained (for the most part) the same between the 4S and the 5.
I felt confident enough in this conclusion to order a few replacement iPhone cameras. I ended up getting a camera for the 4 and for the 4S to test this.
Bottom line: I am 100% certain the camera is the source of this horrible rattle. The iPhone 4 camera doesn't rattle as much, but it certainly does rattle a little. The iPhone 4S camera is the exact same sound that my iPhone 5 makes when I set it down or pick it up... Worse than fingernails on a chalkboard.
Here's a video demonstration comparing the iPhone 4 and 4S cameras
(If anybody wants one or both of these cameras, I'll send them to you. I don't need them anymore and I don't want to throw them away!)
Hey, yeah you are right it's both the vibrator motor end and the camera focusing element. I know this for sure because I dissected my iPhone 5, and applied some lube to these parts and now my phone is solid as a rock. Hope this helps.
Steve Jobs was never a man of MEDIOCRITY .... Soooooooo with that been said [ Dot Dot Dot] they dont get a pass... Its just like how Audi creates some of the most beautiful cars EVER, but if there is something loose in that ENGINE ...Guess what... RECALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thats what I feel needs to happen instead of companys loosing money because they have to replace these devices. IJS if its the GREATEST phone EVER. It should perform as such.
waited in line at apple store to get my iphone 5s and it has rattling and is definetly from button as holding any slight pressure on button and no more rattle.
my 5 didn't have this issue...can't speak about my 3gs/4/4s as i never shook and listened
I just noticed the same thing with my 5S. There's no way this is not normal. How could they put out two iPhones if it wasn't some engineering reason. By the way how long did you have to hold it down?
Right...!
Three replacements later...
Spoke with Apple in America this morning. Apparently this is within normal tolerances. Spoke at quite some length and explained in full how I had examined other examples.
They will not budge on this! Genuinely are totally unwilling to help.
Its really bad to be honest as mine is the same whereby if i gently cover the power button the rattle goes away.
Any ideas anyone as am so exaspertaed by this!
just swapped my space grey for a new in box white one at apple store. we just swapped sim cards and restored from icloud.
this button rattles also but its in an apple black leather case and i am not worried as all the ones on display in store did same thing as did all our iphone 5 ones too.
