I am unable to update any Mountain Lion software due to this error.
This is very frustrating as I have already reinstalled the OSX via recovery. All permissions are correct, and I'm not sure what else to try.

Even simpler:
I was having the same problem and simply (1) Deleting the WiFi entry in Preferences > Network and (2) Adding it back in fixed in.
There was no need to move any .plist files out or restart the iMac.

For people having trouble updating through software update and the app store, maybe you can try downloading the full OS X 10.8.2 combo update directly from Apple and installing it. You can get it here:

Afterwards, maybe things will work better?

No, that didn't work. Safe Boot was a good option though. I'm curious if it is this HP softeware as ever since it was listed I have had this trouble. So I'm downloading the update manually and will see how it goes on the next OSX update.
Ok all, found the solution.
Apparently the issue is a network preferences problem.
Step 1. Delete the active Ethernet and Wifi entries in System Preferences -> Network.
Step 2. Move "Macintosh HD -> Library -> Preferences -> System Configuration -> NetworkInterfaces.plist" to the desktop
Step 3. Restart Mac
Step 4. Create a new service in System Preferences -> Network, for all required (Ethernet and/or Wi-Fi)
Step 5. Run Software Update
If Ok, trash the desktop copy of the NetworkInterface.plist file

I turned off the Firewall and still can't update, I have a slight different notice though:

The Udater tries to update only Apple products: Aperture, Safari and iPhoto.

I've seen some threads saying that this could be a network / provider issue and not an Apple problem. I'm running my intenet connection over a cellular 4g network right now. Could that be the problem?

This problem is on software updates, not on the 10.8.2 update itself.
I am having this problem with the updates to Safari to 6.0.2, and iPhoto.
Updates to XCode and Aperture went OK, but these were separate AppStore purchases, not under the Aegis of Mountain Lion.
Also my iPhone 4 seems to have locked up after updating to iOS 6.01, I am thinking this might be connected iPad 3 however is OK.
How on Earth do I fix my iPhone 4? It just seems to be in zombie land!

thanks!! ok great, I download it and the update from the App store for Safari is gone, and everything is working fine with that. but I still get the same issue with the iPhoto 9.4.2 release. does anyone know where I can get that one?
Just to add to what RamboZa's written here :
* The Apple Support forums have a bug where it randomly adds a space into that link. Clicking on the link works fine but if you try to copy/paste it it will put a space in there. In this case it's the space between the "4h0" "n4a"
* If you do copy and paste the URL make sure no spaces appear anywhere in the URL. Copy and paste it into a text document and rempove any spaces in the URL. Spaces will invalidate what it attemps to download.
* There is a bit.ly link for it here : http://bitly.com/SBV9Cx+ That one you can copy and paste and will show you a preview of where it's going to download from and the URL it shows does not have spaces in it.
* The link is off Apple's CDN servers on a domain owned by Apple. So it should be perfectly safe to download and use. In fact you probably use the same set of servers to download updates from the Mac App store anyway this just bypasses the App Store.
