iPhone5 issues with WPA2/AES Wifi

I am using a Dual- Band Linksys E2500 router with WPA2 Personal (WPA2/AES) enabled. None of my other apple products (iPhone4S, iPhone4, iPad2 and the New iPad) have had problems connecting to my router. But everything changed when I got my iPhone5.

Basically the iPhone5 is capable to connect to the WPA2-Personal wifi network but after 1-2min starts to drop network packages, hence, I cannot browse any page (not even the router page 192.168.1.1) even though I still have a valid IP and the wifi icon is shown on my top screen.

I pinged the phone from my router diagnostics page and while I can browse the web with the iPhone5, I can see no packages lost. However after 1-2min the iPhone5 cannot open any websites while still connected to the wifi, it starts to show network packages lost.

A workaround that I found was to create a "Guest" network (which is not WPA2-Personal) or even WEP. There are no issues when connecting to these alternate networks.

Can anyone out there confirm this issue?? Is it software or hardware related?? It seems to me there are issues with WPA2-Personal (WPA2/AES)

Thanks in advance,

C

That's what is so frustrating, you can't get any acknowledgement from Apple of any sort of a problem.

I too am thinking it is software because I had no issue with my iPhone 4's or my iPad 3's prior to iOS6.

But there are a lot of people on these boards that say that certain iPhone 5's with certain WiFi modems work OK.

I also think this issue exists only with certain WiFi routers and access points. My access point is a Cisco WAP4410N and others have reported this issue with the access point.

Yep, I agree with you. I've had four iPhone 5 handsets (due to physical damage straight out of the box), two of which ran iOS 6.0.1 rather than 6.0, and all have had the wi-fi issue. So I don't believe it's a hardware problem. What I think is that this issue is intermittent, and sometimes wi-fi will start to work for no apparent reason. It often *seems* like the problem is fixed, e.g. after a network settings reset. I don't think it will last for those who say they've had their phone replaced and the issue is now sorted.

I spoke with Apple support yesterday and the guy said that they were aware of the issue. But I must admit that he didn't inspire much confidence; it felt like he was just saying it because it's what I wanted to hear. I told him that my data usage had been massive since getting the iPhone 5, which I believed was related to the wi-fi issue given that I never had an issue on my 4S that it replaced, he said the problem was Siri. I thought that was a pretty stupid conclusion to reach. My previous phone had Siri and I don't even use Siri... It's disappointing when you feel that know more than the technical support person you are speaking with, particularly from a company like Apple. 😮

i agree!! had the same problem with iphone 5 and wifi so i returned it!! no one had an explanation im just supposed to get a new one... its been time consuming and very frustrating i just want a normal working iphone5!! people have been going through iphone 5s because of this wifi situation! and this is supposed to be one of the best phones in the world?! so all these thousands and thousands of phones are defected for us to buy and find out for ourselves when we get home!! not fair 😠

This is definitely not a hardware issue. There is a conflict with the Wifi software and other apps on the phone. I usually download apps from the store, and it would crawl. When I open Youtube and stream, the download speed would increase. I believe there is a problem with old non Iphone 5 Apps vs the new iphone 5 apps causing the problem with wifi speeds. I just updated youtube that is optimized with iphone 5, and it does not affect the speeds anymore. I downloaded another app, and it kicks up the speeds again for downloading.

There is definitely a IOS app conflict.

Your say is not valid. My iphone 5 is new i didn't do backup restore or anything. first time run with no apps installed from app storeand it refused to connect to my network ''Unavle to connect'' . when i change the security to WEP it can connect but no data transfer what so ever.

I bought it from the UK and now stuck with it. since we don't have an apple store in my country.

Thats just bad luck i bought two. one is working fine ..the other doesn't

The reception is also very poor i have to be within 2 meters of the network to be able to detect it

Hi,

In my opinion it's a software issue. Currently I have MacBook Pro (mid 2009), iPhone 5, iPhone 4, Mac Mini, iPad 2. All of them have same issue. It all began with iOS 6 / Mountain Lion. In my opinion it's about DNS. I can easily connect to network, but only request to IP's are responding, names are not resolved. That's why it seems that Internet is not working. Switching WiFi off and then on solves the issue. On MacBook Pro and MacMini I tried to flush DNS cache but it didn't help. Only restarting wireless network. It's more often when device is waking up from a sleep. Any one of you have similar thought about this case?

Adam
