iPhone5 issues with WPA2/AES Wifi

I am using a Dual- Band Linksys E2500 router with WPA2 Personal (WPA2/AES) enabled. None of my other apple products (iPhone4S, iPhone4, iPad2 and the New iPad) have had problems connecting to my router. But everything changed when I got my iPhone5.

Basically the iPhone5 is capable to connect to the WPA2-Personal wifi network but after 1-2min starts to drop network packages, hence, I cannot browse any page (not even the router page 192.168.1.1) even though I still have a valid IP and the wifi icon is shown on my top screen.

I pinged the phone from my router diagnostics page and while I can browse the web with the iPhone5, I can see no packages lost. However after 1-2min the iPhone5 cannot open any websites while still connected to the wifi, it starts to show network packages lost.

A workaround that I found was to create a "Guest" network (which is not WPA2-Personal) or even WEP. There are no issues when connecting to these alternate networks.

Can anyone out there confirm this issue?? Is it software or hardware related?? It seems to me there are issues with WPA2-Personal (WPA2/AES)

Thanks in advance,

C

I just got off the phone with my applecare followup. I had called them last week to notify them of this issue, and they stated that it looked like engineering was working on the problem of wpa2-aes encryption. They agreed to call me back to let me know of any findings.

The follow-up call was not as productive as I had hoped.

The senior applecare employee did not seem aware of this issue at all, and did not seem to have any new data readily available. He decided to put in a specific request with engineering. He plans on calling me back on Thursday or Friday with any results he gets from engineering.

Again, friends, if you are experiencing this issue with WPA2-AES Encryption, PLEASE call AppleCare to make sure as many members of their support team are aware of the issue and can facilitate a swift resolution to this problem.

I can now PROVE that the problem is related to AES encryption.

Have tested with two routers. A brand new and expensive ASUS RT-AC66U and a cheap DLINK DIR-615.

I tried with all types of WPA settings, and this is the results:

Works flawlessly with:

AUTO (WPA or WPA2) - TKIP

WPA only - TKIP

WPA2 only - TKIP

The iPhone connects to the network, but stops working after a couple of settings with:

AUTO (WPA or WPA2) - AES

WPA only - AES

WPA only - AES

AUTO (WPA or WPA2) - TKIP and AES

WPA only - TKIP and AES

WPA only - TKIP and AES

100% sure that I'm right about this, and now just curious if this is software- or hardware related.

oh hey guess what... after i got off the call with applecare, i realized i never tested my ipad 3 after upgrading to iOS6 with this particular setup... and guess what. the ipad 3 with iOS 6 also seems to be having the SAME problem with WPA2-AES encryption.

of course i realized this AFTER i talked to applecare, so now i will need to wait a few days for them to call me back and tell them i am experiencing this issue in a new way. strangely, this seems to be the first instance i have found of a non-iphone 5 product having this issue. perhaps it is a software issue with iOS6, and perhaps it is just me!

Original setup was WPA2/AES Wifi.

I've tried all other security options on my Netgear Wireless G router (WGT624 v3) with no love.

Security settings tried: None, WEP, WPA-PSK [TKIP], WPA-PSK [AES], WPA-PSK [TKIP]+WPA-PSK[AES]

Then ... Went through AppleCare, they had me: reset Network, reinstall OS (that was an hour+ of downloading bummer). Nope. Then they told me to return for a new phone. Did that, came back home.

...

...

Nope. Still no love.

Serial #s are darn similar.

All my other devices work fine: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, MacBook Pro, heck even a Windows Laptop running XP and another one running Windows 7 !

Ah we have our own home now! I've been posting on the other forum.

Trust me, none of the "fixes" on the internet will work. I've spent a week trying them over & over. And router settings are a rabbit hole. TKIP and unsecured networks are not a solution.

Went to Apple Store & tech did a deep reset. They only have an open network in store, so of course it works there. Make them set up an Aiport with default WPA2/Personal if you can.

She told me to come back for a replacement if it didn't work, so I'm going back tomorrow. Hope I don't get another bad unit.

Some other folks more tech saavy have indicated this AES stuff is done in hardware, so don't count on a software fix that isn't some kind of kludge.

And yes, call AppleCare, go in store, or file a bug report. Nobody is compensated for reading discussion boards, only reported problems are real.

Take it back! And check your return date - if bought direct from Apple it's 30 days. From Carriers might be only 14. Once you're past the return date you lose your leverage, they can string you along forever with promises of updates.

I also have iPod 4th generation, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, the New iPad (phones and ipads all updated to ios6) and all have and do work fine with my router. iPhone 5 is when all the issues began.

Spent a couple of hours on the phone with Apple last night. Reset, reboot, set up as new phone, duf, etc. They had me do everything but take it apart myself. Still not fixed. Now I am tired from staying up past my bedtime and even more crabby. 1st call was general customer service, 2nd call was a senior advisor. Now the engineering department is next. My issue seems to be AES related also. Now I am drinking coffee and wondering if I have entered the twilight zone. I have bought nothing but Apple for years. I have now been awakened and i am starting to like the Samsung Galaxy commercials even better. My brand loyalty is reaching its tipping point.

Ok Folks! UPS just dropped off my new replacement iPhone5 and I have an update for you: The new replacement works BEAUTIFUL with my WPA2 network and I did not change a thing. I got the new phone, restored my backup and I was able to connect and hold the Wifi connection.

P.S: My only complaint now is that the new phone came with some scuffs 😟
