macbook pro slow shutdown 10.8.2

I have a macbook retina and installed the 10.8.2 update, now it takes a long time to shut down, before it was quick. I rest pram and smc, still no luck

took the 10.8.3 plunge today (after a complete backup of course) and pleased to say it did not change any of my plist edits. still have a 2 second kill on:

com.apple.securityd

com.apple.coreservices.appleevents

com.apple.coreservices.appleid.authentication

com.apple.mDNSResponder

com.apple.diskarbitrationd

and boot args set to verbose.

consistently achieving 5-7 second shutdowns.

it is my opinion that decreasing the exit timeout of these services won't harm anything. if your OS is killing it anyway at 20 seconds, then killing it after 2 seconds shouldn't change a thing. this has been covered in this thread several pages back but to save you the time, here's the command:

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.coreservices.appleid.authentication.plis t ExitTimeOut -int 2

nobody who has implemented this workaround has thus far encountered any problems by doing so to my knowledge.

oh and there shouldn't be a space in "plist" but for some reason the forum is adding one despite my best attempts to edit this post

Scott, thanks for the tips. Seems you and billy Noah are the aficionados here. I think all who are irritated by this problem should follow their advice and let all the rest of us know how it works out. I changed a friends settings in terminal this weekend for appleid authentication and it helped him temporarily. Maybe there's more to be done with his setup. Incidentally I'm still on lion and I had a default 20" kill for appleid and it does not contribute to slow shutdowns on that o.s. So now I'm curious about upgrading again to mountain lion and integrating these tweaks. Please let us know how it works out for you guys

But is not that Apple wants to turn off our mac in 20 seconds? 😕

no. the exittimeout property is the amount of seconds which must pass before the system kills a process which has failed to exit cleanly. killing them is a last resort for the os and it's definitely not what apple or any os x user "wants". these processes should not be stalling repeatedly as they do. that is why it's a bug.

Hi guys,

I have been trying to solve this issue for months and after trying many things hinted in this thread and in others I have found a solution that is working (at least for now).

I have noticed that the hanging process could have been related to Apple Devices, I have both a Magic Mouse and Apple Keyboard for my Macbook Pro.

Deleting the magic mouse profile from the bluetooth menu and then adding it back did the trick for me.

Now when I reboot it is back to shuting down in 3 seconds.

Not sure if it is going to work for you but that did it for me. It has been 2 days now.

I scoured my console and changed the exit timeouts for all those .plist files, but it never changed a thing. My MacBook Pro (early 2011 15-inch) was constantly taking 20 seconds to shutdown, without exception.

After deleting the default bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse profiles that Apple installed, my shutdown time is consistently five seconds or less now.

I think it's possible that there is a combination of factors going on, because my console says that com.apple.coreservices.appleid.authentication needs to be killed every time I shutdown, so if you don't have bluetooth issues then following the previous solutions may help. Apparently, I needed another solution in concert with those.

Thanks, Mirumoto, and everyone else that has been providing help to this thread.

Wiktor,

I have the same problem as you. My 20 second timeout shows in the logs as com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.coremedia.videodecoder[7087]) Exit timeout elapsed (20 seconds). Killing

I can not find any file named com.apple.launchd or com.apple.coremedia. I'm uaing PathFinder to search which will usually find any file that exists but it isn't finding anything like either of these names.

I think I found the problem on my 13" 2012 MacBook Air. When I have a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable plugged in going to my TV, I get the delay, even with the TV off. When the Thunderbolt cable is not plugged into the MBA, it will shut down immediately and there is no timeout message in the logs. I assume the com.apple.coremedia.videodecoder reference in the logs is because of the Thunderbolt to HDMI cable. There seems to be no library file associated with this cable.

well... an HDMI cable isn't causing any problems on my machine... i just found out (on a clean ML install) that the tattieboggle Xbox 360 controller driver is causing the slow shutdown in my case.. maybe anyone is using this driver too?

and concerning the timeout editing... im not sure if thats a good idea... lets say, you have opened a document, the program always autosaves on quitting. now.. you edit the timeout setting... the program needs lets say 2 seconds for overwriting the file... you kill the process after 1 second.... what do you think will happen with the half overwritten file?
