Sorry for double posting but, even if I had no process hanging at shutdown, I did what pjbmil said but it didn't fix it. Wonder if it's only my login items closing that take some time :/
yup, me too.
after applying the workarounds i have quick shutdown 80% of the time but still hangs sometimes with nothing obviously wrong in the shutdown logs.
have you tried removing login items and then adding them back? this usually helps for a few boots before things start acting up again.
I didn't try to remove/adding back login items but if it's only a temporary workaround I think I'll just leave it be until Apple decides to come up with a fix. Spent too much time yesterday trying to figure this out.
Thanks anyway, mate!
While it's true that this is just a workaround I also wanted to say thank you, this sped up my shut down enormously 🙂
i dont know but after i try Verify/Repair my Disk, Shutdown-Time become very fast again (1-2s) ... But until The next Shutdown or Restart its slow again 😟 (7-8s) !!! (i use SSD)
Don't worry: the repair disk command has nothing to do with shutdown problems.
When I shut down my Retina MB it sometimes also has a slow(er) shutdown.
I couldn't find a specific reason why so far.
Sometimes the processes are hanging; waiting to be killed. The workaround described here at least minimizes the problem.
Schnaufifant has a point that may work for some but a simpler fix for me was just to close all running applications then tick the box to re-open windows when logging back in (I had it un-ticked before).
The shut down went from >20 seconds to about 1 second!
Now whether this stays fixed is another matter!
After disabling Notification Center the shutdown time of my MacBook Pro went back from 20 - 60 seconds to 2 seconds.
Follow the instructions at this link to disable / enable Notification Center:
http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/06/disable-notification-center-remove-menu-bar-icon- os-x/
But I have Notification Center enabled and my shut down is about 1 second! I am sure this will be fixed in 10.8.3!
Five months ago I too was sure that this would be fixed in 10.8.3. But I'am tired waiting and disabling Notification Center works for me.
Try turning it back on again to see if the shutdown time remains the same. As I found with toggling the restoring of program state at shutdown it seems to create a, possibly temporary, fix.
I enabled Notification Center again and that caused shutdown to work as restart: the MacBook would not power down! The restart was very quick, about 1 second. I had to disable Notification Center to get shutdown to switch off power. I know this fix is temporarily; the slow shutdown problem will certainly come back. But for the time being I will do without Notification Center.
Nice one! Dropbox was the problem for me too. Great post - thanks!
There's a thread over on MacRumors that's been going on about this issue for quite some time. Basically, this is a problem that "Apple knows about" and we will have to wait for a fix.

I like attacking it from multiple angles, however, but just be aware that there is no solution for now and it is an OS issue.
Or, do what I did - wipe everything and go back to Lion 10.7.5 using autorecovery, if your computer came installed with Lion. I don't miss any of 10.8's useless add ons, or ridiculous features; the computer goes from active shut down to useable start up in 20 seconds, and everything works like it should. Stable as a rock.
