iPhone 5 Waterproof??

Leading up to the 5's launch, I was reading that the iPhone 5 might be waterproof. I got my 5 on Friday and unfortunately dropped it into a tub of water yesterday. I'm talking full submersion. Thankfully, it is still working with 100% functionality. Did they end up making the 5 waterproof because I thought my phone had no chance of survival when it happened and am very surprised that it's alive.

I think "waterproof" might not be the most appropriate term. "Water-resistant" seems to be more fitting. Last week, I dropped my new iPhone 5 into a sink of water. I literally screamed even as it was falling. It was immersed for about 2 seconds as I fished it out as fast as I could.

Still cursing, I braced myself in anticipation of having a dead, expensive phone. I dreaded looking at the screen but when I did, it was still on. And amazingly, it still works. So I just had to Google this. Maybe Apple's philosophy of making unfixable but sealed phones has it's benefits, after all? But we'll see how long it continues to work. And I'm staying the heck away from water!

I have to say bycicledriver is great the 5S is so tightly made I have just dropped mine in very hot bath water.

It was so hot I couldnt put my arm in to grab it. I did get eventually manage to grab it.

In the hot painful grab I managed to press the torch on it was like a submarine coming out of the depths, ha ha, plus I pressed the home button and SIRI asked me I'm Sorry I dont understand that? I think I may have cursed a little bit.

Will dry it out completley in the airing cupboard tomorrow.

I may have damaged the sound buttons as its not working completly. Siri spoke so she works.

Will update.

Its within the 90 day warrenty I think? I only got it 25th Sept.

So yes, for me at least, the iPhone 5S is water resistant, at least in very hot water.

The warranty is one year but does not cover accidental damage like dropping it in water. Do not connect it to power. Get a baggie and some raw rice or new silica gel packets, put everything in the bag, put it in a cool, dry place and leave it for 5 days. The battery will be depleted after this, connect it to your wall charger for at least 30 minutes then Reset it while it is connected to power.

If this does not work you can do an out-of-warranty replacement for $269 USD.

Well, its been over 3 months since my iPhone's close encounter with a sink of water. Thought I'd provide an update. Everything on the phone works fine (whew) except for that it no longer recognizes my car charger. It displays a message that the device is not supported by the phone. A/C charging is fine and a battery charge lasts about 3 days. I have not noticied any other issues. I think I was extremely lucky and I no longer take any chances when water is around. You shouldn't either.

I dropped my iphone 5s in the ocean(depth of 7 ft), lay in the water for around 12 min, with NO protective case. Retrieved it, immediately rinsed in fresh water and zip locked it in a full bag of rice... Threw it on the dash of a very warm car for 2 days...perfect! This was 2 weeks ago. New found respect for Apple my friends...

Hello Jengu,

Your iPhone submerged in winter? What would happen on a hot summer day? When the water is warmer than the iPhone, the air inside expands keeping water out. When the water is cooler as it would likely be on a hot day, the air inside the iPhone cools and contracts sucking water in.

To see this in action, take a clear hollow object with a pin-size hole and try submerging in water when the water is warmer than the object and air will bubble out. When the water is cooler a stream of water will spray inside as the air contracts.

Looks like you did a good job. When retrieving a soggy iPhone I would avoid pushing any buttons as that might allow water entry while removing water from sockets and speakers by blowing across them or shaking the water out. Also, remove the sim card and dry that hole out if wet. If these areas are wet with saltwater or other substances that won't evaporate, then flush with clean water first ( water that's warmer than the iPhone), distilled is best.

Durning an early moring drive, my passenger brought along a cup of Pepsi.

I out of habit, placed my iPhone 5s in in the cup holder. The cup holder that was occupied by the cup of Pepsi that did not have a lid.

As I set the phone down, I felt the rim of the cup. Pulling it back out I saw that only the bottom half inch of the phone had been suberged. Although the it was the end with the headphone jack and lighting port and home button. I quickly powered it off and placed it in the air vent of the car.

Currently I am still waiting to turn it back on.

Any guesses if it will work or not?
