How can I update OS 9.0.4 to 9.2 to run Classic?

Okay some of you might remember me - like Cornelius...

Basically, I just recently put OS X 10.4 on my computer to fix an earlier problem (you can read my other post if you want). To make a long story short, I put OS 9 on it again in order to get Classic to work. This time I realized it is only OS 9.0.4 or something like that. I need 9.1 apparently. It said in the little help thing that I could just go online and download an update, but it doesn't show up in my update list and I haven't been able to find it on mac.com. How can I get 9.1 - or even better, 9.2?

p.s. - I am still unable to boot into OS 9. When I try, it freezes up at the screen with the smiling computer; that route is either out of the question or needs to be fixed..

Thanks

I went to that site and downloaded 9.1 by clicking on the Software option (the one with the not-bitten floppy..). Now there's an icon on my desktop labeled Mac OS 9.1 Update.smi and when I try to open it it says I need Classic (grr).

(There are also three other icons labeled Mac OS 9.1, 9-1.1, and 9-2.1 Update.smi.download. What are those for - do I need to download those too?!)

So I need Classic to run Classic. What now??

I also found out that my G4 isn't even supposed to start in OS 9, so it's fine after all. =)

Thanks again, and thanks in advance.

As it says you need the previous version to get to the next. Classic runs best at 9.2.2. You don't bother to mention which G4 Mac you have. Some pertenant info might be helpful.

I'm not sure I understand..

So does this mean I need to download the three others?? I'm installing them in order (9.0.4 to 9.1 to 9.2 to 9.2.x), as far as I know. The thing is, I have to use Classic in order to finish installing the first download, which in my theory would let me use Classic. Sorry if I'm kind of cautious, but I've had enough experiments go wrong on this thing. As you can see, I'm completely new to the whole Mac experience. Could you include an install schedule or something?

I also wonder how to keep these updates from replacing OS X.

This should do for the "pertenant info." If not, thread me back.

Thanks again

The G4 Cudes were released and discontinued well before the release of OSX 1.0 if memory serves me. Thus, 9.x would be fine. However, I don't think that Apple has made the 9.x a free system just yet, so you would probably need to find a copy of 9.1 (minimum for classic) on disk to install. I would suggest either a google search or contacting your nearist Macintosh Users Group.

Early versions of the cube apparently shipped with System 9.0.4 - it would seem reasonable that a CD marked "G4 Cube" obtained with a G4 Cube from somebody's grandparents would be the original disk and should therefore boot the computer. I don't think this was covered, but how was System 9 installed? It may be necessary to boot from the CD to install the OS - copying the "System Folder" by dragging it over from the CD likely will not work - if this is what was done, get rid of the "dragged" version before trying to install again. Otherwise, something could have just gone wrong with the previous installation attempt so it wouldn't hurt to try again.

If it still isn't possible to boot after installing System 9 properly, try resetting the PRAM (restart and immediately hold down the ⌘⌥PR keys, releasing only after the startup chime has sounded, say, three times).

Read carefully while installing from the CD - some options may erase the hard drive.

But otherwise, although OS 9.2 hasn't been released free by itself, I think it is covered under a valid OS X license so I think it would be acceptable to obtain a copy from a trusted source (disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, etc., etc.).
