How can I update OS 9.0.4 to 9.2 to run Classic?

Okay some of you might remember me - like Cornelius...

Basically, I just recently put OS X 10.4 on my computer to fix an earlier problem (you can read my other post if you want). To make a long story short, I put OS 9 on it again in order to get Classic to work. This time I realized it is only OS 9.0.4 or something like that. I need 9.1 apparently. It said in the little help thing that I could just go online and download an update, but it doesn't show up in my update list and I haven't been able to find it on mac.com. How can I get 9.1 - or even better, 9.2?

p.s. - I am still unable to boot into OS 9. When I try, it freezes up at the screen with the smiling computer; that route is either out of the question or needs to be fixed..

Please note that there is a difference between booting from a (possibly corrupted) version of OS 9 on your drive & from the installer disk. You must startup from the CD in order to install a known-good version of that OS on the drive.

According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517 your Cube shipped with either 9.0.4 or 9.1 installer disks. You need this installer! From what you say, you probably already have it. Do not use a borrowed OS 9 installer disk unless it is a retail copy & at least version 9.1 or later or it is marked as being for the Cube -- any other disk will most likely install an OS version for another model & not work with yours. (OS 9 is much more model-specific than OS X in what it installs.)

Try this. You should be able to do a "clean" install of OS 9.0.4 or 9.1 while booted from the installer & then apply the later updates to 9.2.x you have or can then download after rebooting into the newly installed OS 9 version you just installed on the drive. Make sure to use the "update drivers" option in the first install -- the drive must have a boot driver to boot into OS 9 from the drive on restart.

Above all, backup your important data to something other than the hard drive before you do anything else. There is always the chance of error or file system problems with any install.
