iPhone 5 gets very hot

This happened to my dad's iphone after the first day. It would be constantly hot and the battery drain was ridiculous. It would never charge to 100% either. He took it to the store and they reset his network settings. It happened again the next day. He took it again to the store and they replaced it and it hasn't happened since. I got my iphone the same day and it hadn't happened to me until today (almsot a week later). It seems to be when I'm on 4G that it heats up and the battery drains quick. Now I don't know if I should take it to the store or try restoring it.

Been following this post for the last four or five days and have done the many varying steps that have been listed, but in the end none have not solved my iPhone battery and hot phone issue. Quite often the phone is very hot, at around 97 degrees F, even when just checking it to see how quicly the battery runs down. Fully charged at 8am this morning and very light use of a couple of hours and by 4pm the phone was at 3%. No Wifi or Blutooth running, and all settings recommened by apple to extend battery life made.

Then at 4:05pm I eventually managed a FOOLPROOF REMEDY TO APPLE iPHONE 5 BATTERY/HEAT ISSUE. I returned it to the Apple store and got a full refund including Applcare cover. Luckily I still had my iPhone 4 and about twenty minutes later at a Local THREE shop I had my nano sim card in an adaptor and my iPhone 4 up and working (With IOS6). In the last 8 hours its only lost 10% charge compared to my iPhone 5's loosing 93% in the 8 hours before that and the 4 is running at normal temperature.

The iPhone 5 problems will obvioulsy all get sorted in the end but to me it shouldn't have happened on such a scale in the first place. I may well get one in the comming months once everything is sorted out, or just might wait to the next generation iPhone. Meantime I will continue waiting patiently for the new iMac and hope it dosn't have any problmes when launched.

I've had my iphone 5 16gb since monday and yesterday was the first time this heat problem happened to me, i used the gps/maps to get to montreal-quebec and there was no problem after we arrived to this old house... It had a metal roof and there was almost no signal for my data or phone carrier. So i tried to check facebook, email and other apps and it could load any data due to the bad signal. BUT there it was, the little 'location' arrow in the top of the screen purple/ blue lighted up. At this point my phone was too hot that i could hold it, i put it back into my pocket and it was burning my thigh!, so i tried to go into my phone general/privacy, and turn the locations off, that made the phone cool down in about 3 minutes. I'm still annoyed for what happened, but now i know a way to fix it... I thought I'd share it with you guys.

I'm having the same problem. I called apple and they said they haven't heard of this before but they did send me a brand new phone to replace the old one. Now I wonder if this is a universal problem with all iphones

Mine is the same. I have a 16gb IP5. The battery does not last and it does gets hot. Is apple working on trying to figure out what the problem is?

Getting same problem thought is was just me. But the battery life is getting worse. The first couple of days the phone was great. Now it feels like I have a heater in my pocket.

I also get this problem, but only happened when I play GOF2 HD and other 3D games.

and some time I put the phone standby when it has 100% battery, and next day drop to around 89%. doesnt feel right.

I am also having a heating and battery usage (draining quickly) problem. I hope Apple monitors this site. I did call Apple support but they really did not acknowledge that it is an issue or provide a way to correct it. They did suggest a restore, but based on what I have seen here I don't think that is the solution. I don't normally buy the Apple extended warranty, but I may consider it before my 30 days is up.

Not really happy if this is a systemic issue.

I have to same problem as you all. My battery drains quickly, in about 3 hours and when I use it for 5 minutes it gets really hot. Nothing helped to solve this, resetting, restoring, etc.

To save some battery power, cause I needed my phone, I switched to airplane mode and the drainage was over. Then I tried switching some different radios on and off, like GPS, 3G and WiFi. When I switched my mobile data off, which is the 3G, the drainage stopped and it didn't get hot anymore. So, its seems it's a malfunctioning 3G radio.

I get my iPhone replaced for a new one tomorrow, but for everybody who keeps on having this problem, I hope this helps.

Though it may not be "every" iPhone 5, it certainly seems to be most. I pulled my phone out of the box less than two hours ago. Upon opening my phone, I had 80% batter life. Within 20 minutes of use (syncing and grouping my apps) my phone is extremely warm (I wouldn't say hot) and my battery life is at 50%. So no, I don't think you can suggest that this issue lies solely with some user.

So, your experience (and the handful of posters in this thread) out of the 10+ MILLION iPhone 5's sold so far define a "majority"???? You cannot be serious!! You need a course in analytic thinking.

FYI, it's normal for all iPhones to get warm under heavy use such as initial setup. Also, you can't judge battery usage until you've done a full cycle calibration of the meter: Charge to 100% +30 minutes, run down until auto-shutoff, and charge again to 100% + 30 minutes.

I have the same issue. Even though I charge the phone to 100%, the battery drains very fast. And the phone gets hot when listening to music or browsing for couple of minutes. I can feel the heat even if the phone is in my pocket.

Depending on what you mean by "very fast", try these steps as needed: (Note that all iPhones will get noticeably warm playing music, particularly in your pocket with body heat added - this is normal.)

1. Reset phone (no data loss): Press both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears/

2. Restore in iTunes using a backup.

3. Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup.

If restoring as new doesn't help, there is either a hardware problem, or it was hacked or jailbroken in the past.

my iphone 5 (32gb) is also overheating. i'm pretty certain it's not a software thing as i did a full restore and back up 2 days ago and it's not helped at all (although it did help with the other issue i had). i'm not a gamer (unless you count scrabble and card games which are hardly full on in terms of usage) so i'm pretty sure it's not that. i'm using the net a lot as i don't have a proper internet connection at home yet, so lots of browsing, facebook and such. i do have location switched on so i'll see if turning it off helps, but the most heat seems to be generated if i make calls - i get to feeling my ear is on a fryer.

edit: that said, it does cool off very quickly too. i made a call just before making this post and it was really hot, and now i've written the post it's stone cold again.

the battery doesn't seem to be draining too fast but then my previous phones (galaxy s2, iphone 4 before that) drained even faster so i don't have much to base this on.

maybe if it's an apple thing there could be an update with a fix? if it's a hardware thing - i bought my phone thru verizon, should i go to them or to apple? in the past (and for all my other apple hardware) i've had apple care and gone to apple but not this time. would apple still be able to help?

edit 2: i'll try restoring from new rather than backup as per previous post, see if that helps at all...

This is normal to the iphone 5 since its made out of aluminium it conducts heat alot easier than the iphone 4 /4s glass back so going from the iphone 4/4s to the iphone 5 it will feel alot warmer when being used, and if your iphone was over heating it will go into a safe mode.
