iPhone 5 gets very hot

Having owned my iPhone 5 for 2 days now I've noticed that when I've been using it for about 5 minutes the back becomes really quite hot and the battery seems to be running down fairly rapidly. Does anyone know the cause of this and is there anything that can be done to remedy the problem? Cheers

I received my iPhone 5 on the 29th of October after buying it on the Apple online store.

It has been getting pretty hot during phone calls and extended use. The battery seems to drain much faster then normal. I have done a factory restore but the issue keeps persisting.

If I take it into Apple, will they replace the phone on the spot and give me a new one? What documentation do I have to take with me to the store if so?

I have had my iPhone 5 for about one month and on a few occasions it has gotten very hot and drained the battery. BUT TODAY!!! It was hot as fire—too hot to touch the back—and the battery drained from 92% to under 10% within an hour and a half 1.5 hours. What the heck is this about? I do not game and have only the basics running. I have location turned on, but have not utilized it at all today or recently.

yes there is clearly a major issue - I took my phone back to the Apple store 4 days after I got it and complained of excessive battery drain - now it gets so hot I could cook an egg on it - I am away at the moment but next month you will be seeing me Apple store and I want a replacement please! The mega excessive battery drain is totally unacceptable - I am luck to get half a day and that's with little to no use of the phone!

When you did the erase all content and settings on the device did you set up as new or restore from back up right away?

Reason asking if you restored from back up right away and call AppleCare you will be informed to do another erase all content and settings and be informed to set up as new. Just a heads up, I learned this..

If you have same problem like mine: Gets Warm/Heat and Battery drain pretty fast; I got temporary solution.

For 2 days I turned off the 3G connection under Carrier Setting (so i rely only on 2G/EDGE). I only turn on my 3G when I really need to do something over the internet (browsing, downloading).

I found that Battry last much longer and there is no heat (only when I turn on my 3G i got Heat).

Seems like the 3G connection from the carrier I am using does not available in every area/place. I suspect when I turn on the 3G, my iPhone will keep on trying to connect to 3G. In result battery drained faster and heated. But I think the problem is because my iPhone does not try to connect to 3G but to 4G instead. In my country the 4G still not available.

So In result the iPhone keep on searching to connect to 4G.

Well this is my asumption.

I have had my Iphone 5 for a month now and ive played games, used maps and loads of things and used it prettey much constantly every day. But no problems have occured until the other day I left ithto charge over night (i had done before) and in the morning it was burning hot and only at 30%! I took the case off and unplugged it for 5 mins this helped it cool down, but the battery had gone down to 23%. So I put it back on charge and the symbol in the corner showed charging but it kept going down. I didnt charge it that day and it died before the day was over, but I havent managed to bring back its old self. Just today I had it at 100% this morning and it was out of battery before I got home from school and I hadn't used it once because I was worried it would overheat as I noticed it was quite warm n my pocket at one point. I hope there is a solution or fix to this problem soon - I really want my Iphone 5 back!

Hi DM,

Go to settings>general>about>usage.

Look at the standby time.

Look at the usage time.

If these times are identical you need to restore your device and set it up as a new. You have an issue with your iOS.

However if you do not see identical numbers there are other reasons the device may overheat. Such as; direct exposure to sunlight, streaming video, liquid damage and running large applications.

I had a similar problem. My phone didn't get hot but it did get warm and I noticed the battery seemed to drain faster than my iphone 4. I did a DFU restore and set the phone up as a new phone. A DFU restore loads a new copy of the firmware from Apple. Here is a link for how to do it.

After I did the DFU restore I used the phone for a day to see if the condition had improved. I noticed that it didn't get as hot and the battery life improved. After that first day I restored from my most previous backup and so far things seem to be working well. I would suggest trying the phone first before doing the DFU restore. Some people have reported that doing the restore from backup, after the DFU restore. caused the problem to reappear. Others said that it didn't. YMMV.

Hi,

I've had problems with my iPhone during the first two weeks or three weeks. Two days after I got it, I went to the Apple Store for an overheating issue (Plus, my battery was draining really fast and I could barely spend a whole day without plugging it). The Genius bar had it fixed with a factory restore. Fortunately, my problem was really solved. I no longer have problem with it overheating AND my battery can last an entire day if I use it a lot. If I don't use it too much, the battery is normally at about 50% when I go to sleep.

Hoewever, I still have a couple of issues with my phone, but nothing dramatic.
