i can receive email but cannot send any on my new iphone5. have followed suggestions. any ideas?

When I get to the outgoing mail server screen, the section with the username and password is greyed out and both the username and password fields say, "Optional."

This is a Yahoo account. Is there a different solution for Yahoo?

The solution I posted on the previous page was for a Comcast.net mail problem. I checked my Yahoo.com mail accounts that are working fine and they also have 'optional' greyed out Username and Password in the Outgoing Mail Server so your problem lies elsewhere.

ON my iPad I can receive mail but when I try and send I get the error message that states "a copy of the email has been placed in your outbox. Sending the message contents to the server failed. I have tried everything suggested for both phone and iPad and can not resolve. My iPhone has no problem sending as of now. Any ideas?

Thanks so much, this has been bugging me! I could send and receive email from PC and iPad, but whilst I could receive email on iPhone 5' I kept getting annoying 'cannot send mail' message on my iPhone, sent messages stuck in Outbox. Your easy step by step worked a treat. Thanks.

AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR of not being able to send emails from my iphone (which is only a 4S but I don't think that was the problem) and after following EVERYO'NE'S SOLUTIONS which didn't work I finally solved the problem myself! I could still send emails if I went into the Hotmail website but not using Windows Live Mail.

I think I lost the ability to send them when I updated the ioS version on my phone to 8.2 or whatever it was. Here is how I did it: 1 - deleted my mail account through settings. This was originally set up as Hotmail account which may have been the problem. 2- I then added a new account under Outlook using the same email address (Hotmail) as always and my same password. No other changes.

That's it. It works now.

This may not be your problem but I never saw, not once! anyone suggest doing this. I think Hotmail isn't used much now. I still prefer it on my PC to Outlook, I find it easier to use. But for some reason after the update the iphone wasn't agreeing with my Hotmail or Microsoft account...yet another glitch between MS and Apple. But I'm very happy now. I just hope it lasts! Very off putting not to be able to answer emails from my phone. Hope this helps, even if its a couple of years later!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been without the ability to send email from my iPhone since JANUARY!!! I've been too busy to dig into the problem and had no idea where to turn -- not my cellular service provider, not the Apple store -- NO IDEA. . . at my wits end. This worked and I have rejoined the land of normal connected people :-) With much appreciation!!
