iPhone 5 and OS X 10.5.8?

No workaround that I can think of.

You can take your iPhone 5 to an Apple Store and they'll set it up for you. I would think the Verizon store would do that also. Of course, you won't be able to sync any stuff you may have in iTunes till you take care of the OS X upgrade.

I have this same problem, i have the iphone 4 with the new IOS installed and it needs the itunes to sync, but my computer is running 10.5.8 as its an old macbook and wont let me install the newest itunes. is there really no way around this short of buying a new computer?

is there any fix for this? I have two kids with iphones on iOS6 that can't be recognized by iTunes running 10.5.8, on iMac's running 10.5.8

Yes there is and the other poster told you what that fix was. You need to upgrade your Mac operating system to Snow Leopard 10.6. You'll need to contact Apple and request and disc from them and Snow Leopard will update so that you can get the Mac App Store and then upgrade further and then you can upgrade iTunes to 10.7.

Upgrade your OS to Snow Leopard.

I have the same problem except that my phone is the 4. I got a pop up on my phone that said there was an update available. I hooked it up. Went about half way, then dropped off. Said needed updated Itunes. Itunes said it was up to date. So I check itunes.com. There is an itunes 7. Ok. So I tried to download it and it says I have to have at least OS 10.6.8 or later.

How much does this upgrade cost? And, except for going in to the actual store, how do I contact them for the disc without it costing me?

And...is there a way to restore the phone to how it was before the "update" so that itunes sees it again and just not update the phone?

You cannot get it for free.

Search for it online and see what it costs and order it.

WHOAA NELLY NOT SO FAST

The best answer I have for all of us 10.5.8 Losers although it doesn't resolve @ 100% the synch between iphone and itunes.

Instead of buying and upgrading to OSX 10.6...for an overaged computer that doesn't want or need an upgrade...I opted to buy the equivalent icloud storage as my iphone 4 (16go) which is roughly the same price as snow leopard, because they have reduced the price considerably for us stubborn 10.5.8ers and co.

Then I proceeded with an icloud back up from the old Iphone to the icloud (after purchase).

When starting iphone 5, we are prompted to either:

-start as if a new iphone

-back up from itunes

-back up from icloud

So I chose an icloud back up which worked perfectly and now my Iphone 5 is working and up to date with all contacts, apps, photos etc...but of course no iTunes = no music.

So I bought iTunes match, which has been laborisly analysing and uploading all my iTunes library to the cloud, after which I download directly or stream onto my phone.

So this iPhone adaption/upgrade cost me $40, which I accept, although the supplimentary iCloud storage space may not have been needed, so it maybe possible to get by with the $25 iTunes match, which is great.

That's all folks, no snow leopard

My problem is that my iPhone 5 just arrived and I am still running 10.5.8 on a computer, which I don't wish to upgrade to newer system software.

I was running on 10.5.8 with OS 6 on my iphone 4 before my the 5 was delivered. So apparently its OK.

However the 5 requires itunes 10.7 to fireit up unless you do it via icloud.

So I suggest...do a complete back up of your 4 on itunes then back that up to the cloud.

When you fire up the 5, do it via an icloud restore (connexion wifi of preference).

But you'll still be without music. Itunes match can cure that (its all about money!)

I've a 3.1 macbook from late 2007, works fine but its not at all recommended to up-date it to snow leopard as its too much for my hardware. So I was in the same boat, and still am but I've circumnavigated the bad apple !!

Which its rather surprising that they dont suggest this solution to us 10.5.8ers. Anyway..good luck

All this downloading and screwing around mentioned on this board is a massive waste of time. The easiest way to resolve synchronization is to buy a new mac and iphone and ipad every 2 or 3 years. Then have somebody update all your apps. That's what Apple wants us to do and that's what we should do.

Actually when I first got my iPhone 5 I could sync it with my itunes, but the update 10.7 on the 12th Sept requires a higher OSX version.

Depending on where you live, when you force a customer to update for something that was previously supported, you have to supply the required update free.

Its not like Snow costs a lot, but like the OP there are plenty of people not interested in updating older equipment that runs fine with OSX 10.5.8.

We can not upgrade Power PCs to Snow Leapord. But my understanding when I bought the Iphone 4S was that I could sync it to Power PCwith 10.5.8; in fact, but now it will no longer let me sync. I have always been a loyal Apple customer; however, I am disappointed by the way Apple has treated the Power PC users; these computers are still wonderful but we are unable to upgrade them and now I can't even seem to sync my Iphone 4S. Any ideas?

You can sync your 4S running iOS 6 with OS X 10.5.8 by using iTunes 10.6.3. Only the iPhone 5 requires iTunes 10.7 or higher. To do so go here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes, download the iTunes 10.6.3 for Mac installer (.dmg file) and save it on your desktop. Then close iTunes and double-click on the downloaded file to install 10.6.3 on top of your current version of iTunes. When finished you should be able to sync your phone.

I just got a new iPhone 4s from Sprint.

My MBP is running 10.5.8.

When I connected the 4s to my Mac, it asked if I wanted to upgrade my iTunes.

I did >> to 10.6.3.

Now, how do I sync Address book, iCal...?
