DVD player crashes immediately when inserting a DVD

I just can't accept that the only fix is to re-install Mt. Lion or roll it back and then roll it forward. I'm sure there is not a mass reinstall going on in Cupertino. Anyone have a real solution that does not involve a mess of re installation?

Thank you for buying your brand new computer... The first thing you need to do to make it work is to pretend you are on a bloatware infested windows machine and reinstall the os.

I agree! I spent 20 min with Apple Care yesterday with the end result being reinstall Mountain Lion & see if that fixes the problem. NOPE! Then an hour this morning during which I was escalated to a senior tech who said I was the 8th such issue this moring. They gathered system info from my laptop & sent it to the engineers that screwed this up to begin with to fix the problem. In the mean time, use VLC & screw DVD palyer!

Also having this issue on my MPBR. Handbrake is working okay as are s/w disks but insert a movie DVD and insatnt crash, reopen just recrashes.

Really not a good week between Maps, the iOS6 Messages deletion bug, getting locked out of my alternate iCloud account with birthdate not being recognised and now this!

Apple Store Guru suggested I download VLC (free) and use that for DVD playback until Mother Apple issue update which is included in the next update after 10.8.2

Me too. I tried inserting three different DVDs (movies) and each time DVD Player crashed. Then I opened DVD Player first and inserted DVDs - each time DVD player crashed.

Good question - how do you roll back??

Apple genius at the Apple Store told me that I had some corrupt files which resulted in the DVD player crashing. THe genius showed me using disk utility, to let it scan for corrupt files then it will fix it.

The first support guy I spoke to took me through disk utility where we scanned for permissions errors, verify the permissions and then repaired them but it didn't actually find anything wrong in disk utility. We then went through Alt-CMD-R-P which I think took me to the recovery section of the disk, we then created a completely new user and logged in under the new user name - all to no avail, which is when he finally told me to reinstall the operating system and left me to it. So far the only thing that has worked is installing the old framework folder for the DVD Player.

Yes, there is a problem with OS X 10.8.2 which doesn't allow DVD Player to set the DVD Region the first time, but I also managed to solved a similar problem by deleting every cache file in Macintosh HD/System/Library/Caches and rebooting.

Thanks plopthegeek, that solved my problem. I tried TheWrinklie's suggestion from the other forum (installing the DVDplayer.framework from 10.7.4) but it didnt help.

Emptying the caches and rebooting solved it. Phew!! You should get 10 points for this!!

I had the same problem with Mac Pro 5,1 - dvd player crashes when dvd inserted. Did everything proposed by Apple Care, but narrowed down to hardware issue. Unfortunately the cost taking the tower to the service centre is more than replacement cost of new dvd player. The player itself was working reading data discs, it just crashed with movie dvd's.

Two things happened which go my player working - there was a minor update for ML, and I clean out caches using a cleaning app (thanks plopthegeek). It worked.

The issue I discovered could be due to the fact my Mac Pro came delivered with the wrong region setting. I'm in a Region 3 country, but it was set to Region 6. For this I frankly think Apple should have better Quality Control checks for a premium product like a Mac Pro.
