iOS 6 disables wi-fi on sleep mode - disappointing

I'm not being difficult im just stating a fact. I receive 40+ emails a day and i like to be notified the second they come in.

For four years (since the 3gs) i have owned iphones and i rely upon it notifying me when i have mail, mostly when its locked in my pocket around my house.

My iphones have always stayed connected to wifi when sleeping without the power connected, fact.

When i got my iphone 5 and restored it and put IO6 back on it OTA, all was fine apart from after an hour i hadn't got any emails, i pulled my phone out my pocket and unlocked it and then a few seconds later they all came in. This has never happened since owning an iphone since 2008..........

I was so annoyed i googled it and found thousands of people were having the same trouble with the new IOS 6, simply restoring my iphone and putting on IOS 6 via itunes solved the issue and like i said, i received the notification that you posted a reply on my iphone, that was locked, asleep, in my pocket, 3g off, connected to my home wifi.....

Can you not even acknowledge these facts???

I do not believe you are lying, but there is definitely something weird, as I also find the opposite to be true. So, yes, I acknowledge the facts as you experience them. I would love for Lawrence Finch to chime in here. Maybe I'll post a link to this thread on the other one.

Yes thats an idea to hear some other views, try and get him over to share his experience.

I find it hard to believe that all three of my phones have been mutants that stay comected while sleeping.

I could make a video if you want sometime showing how when i recieve an email, my locked, sleeping phone lights up and has the notification, while unplugged.

Anyway im happy my phone is back to normal and i have nothing bad to say about IOS 6.

I have the same experience between IOS 5 and IOS 6 on one 4s but not the other. It switches to cellular data when locked. Only one phone does this and only since IOS 6. This is not a normal behavior.

I'm not disputing that you are getting push notifications while the phone is sleeping, but Lawrence Finch has pointed out (in that same thread, did you read all his posts?) that the technology does not allow push over wifi, so your notifications are coming from the cellular connection. You may believe that the phone stays on wifi while sleeping, because it can switch very quickly when waken. I've experienced that myself. I just want to add that LF knows a whole lot more about Apple tech than either of us. I'm a beginner at it myself, and can tell you that those Apple points, of which LF has over 13K, do not come easy.

Try restoring the iphone then put IOS 6 on via Itunes, it did the trick for me.

I don't get those notification without wifi on...hence why, when i had the problem of no wifi while sleeping i did not recieve them?

It is not a fact. The fact is that WiFi turns off when the phone is asleep, and always has.

I have had an iPhone since the first day they were available, and I have done network tests that verify that WiFi is turned off when the phone goes to sleep, approximately 45 seconds after it goes to sleep, to be exact. It's an easy test:

Go to your router's control panel and check the IP address of the phone, or get it from the WiFi settings on your phone.

Open a command window on your computer and type:

ping -t <phone's IP address>

You will see a continuing stream of responses. Now put the phone to sleep. The responses will continue for about 45 seconds, then will time out.

I've done this with every version of iOS since I noticed that I was using cellular data when I thought WiFi was on; that includes all versions of 3, 4, 5, and now 6.

I can also attest to the fact that it worked perfectly until iOS6.

I have had iPHone 3g, 3g3, 4 and 4s and get tons of emails as I am checking 5 with each device. My phone would be notifying while sleeping all night long or sitting on my desk while working. Okay, it is possible that maybe the pushes were going on Cell data but after iOS 6 on my 4S it definitely doesn't do it if I turn it to airplane mode. But my iPad below there is no doubt a significant change.

Now for the iPad, I can certainly confirm the same. I had iPad 1, wifi only, and was always receiving push notifications while it slept, so clearly wifi was never disabled. Went to the new iPad(wifi only), and received notifications over wifi 24/7 without issue until the day I did the OTA installation of iOS 6.

I am at this point trying the restore that some have claimed resolved their issue, but I'm not very hopeful.

Ok no worries i don't really know what im talking about, all i know is that i recieve emails when my phone is asleep and when wifi is off i don't recieve them?

Im not gonna even look at my router, all i know is that's a box that gives me internet.

Lawrence please explain in laymens terms why i get email notifications when my phone is locked but when i turn wifi off i dont'?

I'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense. If you cannot get push notifications over wifi then how does it work on WIFI only iPads? It has certainly worked perfectly for me until I went to iOS6.

On WiFi only devices (iPad and iPod Touch) WiFi stays on all the time. And it works because the iPad DOES poll for notifications. Those devices don't have the battery drain of an iPhone's cellular chip, and the iPad has a much larger battery, so the devices can afford to keep WiFi on.

Then they broke this with iOS 6. I have a wifi only iPad 2 and used to get 24x7 notifications even while the pad was sitting sleeping in my work bag. After iOS 6 it receives nothing when sleeping. I use my iPad at meetings and there's an IM app we use. Now as soon as the device goes to sleep I get disconnected from the service. This is a major oversight and something changed in iOS 6.

Lawrence please could you explain in simple terms why on all three of my iphones I get email notifications when my phone is locked and asleep but when I turn the wifi off i don't?

Something is definetely different in iOS6 to previous incarnations of iOS.

We have a open WiFi access point at work and once you connect to the access point you then need to go to a browser page where you put in a username and password.

Now previously, although Wifi switched off when the phone went to sleep it would immediately reconnect when waking and it would REMEMBER the login details and work pretty much straight away unless i went out of the building after which when I returned I had reauthenticate.

Howerver, now , in iOS6 I have to reenter my details even after a minute of sleep without leaving the building.

SO ther eis definetely something different than before in how the the security details are cached and I expect this to be fixed with the next update.
