Kernel panic after updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2

Hello people,

I did a software update through ARD to several machines running 10.8.1. The upgrade was performed to 10.8.2. After the update, i restarted the machines ASAP and some of them returned kernel panics at boot time. After the restart from the kernel panic, the machine boots eventually. This happens every time.

I attached the full log:

On a sample machine can you boot into safe mode, run the usual disk verification/repair permissions and then use the 10.8.2 Combo updater to reinstall the update.

Do this at the machine not through ARD.

The OS as been running less than a second, it probably has not finished loading completely, thats maybe why the OS version not yet set. The last loaded kext was the CPU power management, although that was at approx 0.2 seconds well before the crash at 0.9 seconds. Anything special about your power management system?

Other than that I can only suggest a reinstall of the OS

I am not good at kernel panics so thats the best I can do.

Hey did exactly the steps below and it cured the kernel panics:

1. Booted into recovery mode (if u're under filvevault u need to go cmd+R at startup).

2. Verified disk (all was ok) and repaired the permissions.

3. Restarted.

4. Reinstalled the 10.8.2 Combo updater found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

5. Before restarting, i deleted the kernel panic log files from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports to avoid pop-ing up the dial box at system startup that says the computer was shut down becuase of an error.

6. Restarted.

7. No more errors!!!

Sep 28, 2012 7:33 AM in response to IamNehalem

Same problem here, kernel panics during login after installing 10.8.2. I just reinstalled the combo update but got the next kernel panic on reboot.

Thing is: When I used cmd+R, disk utility showed the name of my SSD grayed out, so I couldn't verify/repair there. Disk Utility when logged in normally however showed no problems. I also cannot boot in safe mode (aborts after 30-50% progress) and had to use the original system DVD to be able to run the Apple Hardware Test. Swapped memory today, still problem occurs.

My log looks very similar to the original post (see end of post). However, I also had

Any ideas how to track this down? Clean install will a) cost a lot of time and b) seems like ignoring whatever the cause might be...

Hey, thanks for the quick reply : ) Gosh, you have to double-click on the gray entry to mount it... never would have thought of that. All checks green though...

**** it... when I did the clean install of ML, it took me 2-3 days just to get the whole system back up working. So I'm really hoping a clean install can be avoided somehow. But I agree, feels like software bug otherwise it would be a pretty big coincident that it happened just a day or so after I upgraded to 10.8.2... just my luck. I also have the "your battery time if halfed"-problem a lot of people are reporting since upgrading to mountain lion...

Oct 3, 2012 5:02 AM in response to IamNehalem

Since I have updated to 10.8.2 I am getting kernel panics. It is the first time, that I get them and I have never ever had problems with my mbp15 (2010 or 11?). It feels like the kernel panics do come more and more often. They just appear out of nothing. Sometimes when I do something with the Finder and sometimes when I use Safari. I add a crash report, maybe you can help me. I just tried to install the combo update, but the result is the same.

hope you can help me!

thanks, tom

Hi William,

I would have said suspect Little Snitch for being a 3rd party piece of software and worth taking out of the system to eliminate it.

I am interested in how you identified the software has the cause of the crash. I can see it in the loaded kexts but not in the backtrace, I can see mainly NVidia drivers, Graphics and IO in there.

On one other point is the number listed with the kext, in this case 3871 a version number or a memory offset? It looks like it could be a version number but that is a guess.

Any help appreciated, I know it is not my area of expertise but I am interested.

Thanks
