Ios6 causing excessive data usage?

Yes, I agree, this problem is alive and well. I am experiencing a constant data drain, for no reason at all. If you have heard of the problem with Exchange - I even deleted all exchange accounts, rebooted - and still a slow, constant data drain of .01 MB PER SECOND. And, the data goes nowhere.

Many people have noted that this happens at particular times of day - for me it is absolutely constant, and seems to be and iOS issue - as I have deleted and/or shut down everything else that could be causing it. The only thing it could be is iOS.

I tried everything to fix this , I restored and lost everything . So I took it to apple and they swapped it out . Still had high data usage . So I restored as new iPhone (as I did before ) and just didn't sync with ICloud and this totally fixed everything . To get my contacts back I went to icloud.com and copied it over one by one . May be too much work but it worked for me .

I figured oot what the issue was. I originally noted the issues with my uploads around 6.1.1, and continued with 6.1.2, and the usage was killing my bill.

Over the past two weeks or so, I've been taking screen shots nightly, and then resetting my usage counter. I was getting like 146 up, and 38 mb downloaded, a horrible, theoretically unachievable ratio. I have saved all my images, and would be happy to show them to anyone interested.

I took my iphone 5 (32gb, Rogers) to the apple store to replace my broken lock button. I mentioned the data leak to the "genius" and he insisted that if there was an issue, apple would step up. By means of this forum, I say Bullcrap. The new phone has 6.1.0, and after doing a full restore, as in, bring back every single one of the apps I had, the data problem was gone. my usage over the past two days hasn't even been 10mb up.

I realize, a skeptic would say the hardware was the issue, but simply put, hardware may send the data, but it's a command from the software that is doing it. And no, It isn't any of the apps you installed. The couple I tried couldn't event track the uploads...

Hey apple, pay attention to what's wrong with your ios. No one cares if you stop people from jail breaking, we care aboot our data charges....

Is this getting any better with iOS 6.1.3?

TBh, I'm afraid to upgrade and find oot. Until apple acknowledges fixing it, I'm in no hurry to update...

I'm still struggling to find an answer as well. I tried reseting my phone at home. Within a few hours it was back to using wifi and data at the same time, and using large amounts of data. I took it to a store, and the guy at the help did a special reset where they remove the software completely and reinstall. He said not to restore my phone because that could put the error back on the phone. Overnight, my phone began using data again while on wifi. The only applications I had downloaded since the reset were Flipboard and Datawiz. That's it. So it doesn't seem like its something to do with any particular application. I have heard the icloud might be to blame, but the Apple store guy said it should only use very small amounts of data. I still might delete it off my phone, but I need my calender and notes to sinc across my devices, so this isn't ideal. For now, I'm continuing to turn my data off any time i'm at home or work, and only using my phone's data when i'm on wifi. Seems like that's missing the whole point of having the mobility of a cell phone though. I wish they would just fix the problem once and for all.

I had to do:

GENERAL ->

RESET ->

"Erase all Content and Settings"

and

SETTINGS ->

SAFARI->

"Clear history" and "Clear Cookies and Data"

This fixed my problem, and no more excessive data usage since January.

BUT BEFORE YOU DO THIS, make a backup of your phone to icloud or itunes. I chose icloud instead of itunes, and after doing the ""Erase all Content and Settings" it asked if I wanted to restore, I selected the icloud backup, and it restored my phone just back the way it was. I have not had any more problems since the first of January.

I am not saying this will work for you; it worked for me and a few others I have talked to. This was happening with ios 6.0.1 (whatever the 2nd version was). I think there have been at least 2 IOS upgrades since then, and those have not been a problem.

Yes, I agree - this is an issue at the operating system level. I completely deleted BOTH my Exchange account AND my iCloud account, deleted every app that ever had access to data, (never even downloaded or installed the infamous Podcaster), rebooted the phone a few times - and still, something continues to download data.

What else could it possibly be? It seems clear at this point that it is the Apple iOS.

If anyone can think of anything else it could possibly be, I'd love to hear it. At this point I've done many days worth of research and followed up on every possible lead - and still my phone is a data sink.

I'm definitely having the data hemorrhage on iPhone5/latest iOS/AT&T.

Previous months' data usage were 27MB, 112MB, 68MB. My first month on this phone, and I'm out of data at 20 days, with everything switched off. 200MB is an old plan, but I've used it successfully for years.

Ticket placed with AT&T this evening, and they will monitor my phone's usage over the next 4 days. I'll be darned if I'm going to buy an expensive plan just because the phone has a problem!

So, after months of dealing with ATT and Apple: Nothing. Apple Executive Offices blames "third party apps", in my 19-yr old daughter's case, Instagram and Snapchat. They completely ignore the fact that she had used these apps BEFORE iOS6 upgrade with NO OVERAGES. Now every month, there are overages. Massive amounts of "internet/Media Net-SENT" throughout the day and around midnight.

Not their problem.

I am so fed up. Apple is not the company it used to be.

Sprint? Samsung? Any suggestions?

Wow, I guess I am not alone. Our household has 5 iPhones & an iPad and only 1 device is giving us data drain. After restoring and upgrading to the latest iOS 6 update my husbands phone is sending data every hour on the hour, even on wifi. I contacted AT&T after watching the data drain day after day & the rep had never heard of the problem before. He assured me he would document the trouble & even he was surprised at how much data it was using. I tried deleting iCloud with no success and I will eventually try to restore it again, but I hope this gets resolved soon. I guess we just have to wait.

Same here. Out of nowhere my data usage quadrupled. I've deleted the podcast app which seems to be a big part of the problem

Yesterday, I stepped out of the house (away from WiFi), and in a ten minute period, unknowingly used 40MB of cell data! That's the first time that has happened in a while. I had accidentally left the switch on for the maps app. The only other switch on was for compass calibration, which I leave on all the time, and causes no problems. Watch out for the maps app. I have and use Google maps.

I agree that we need to watch out for the maps app, and the podcaster - but with location services locked down and podcaster NEVER even installed - why would the OS be sucking down data? I really don't think the issue is an app. I believe it is the OS itself.

Apple, when will you take notice that this is a severe issue?
