Ios6 causing excessive data usage?

My data usage and phone bill has doubled since I got the iPhone 5 on iOS version 6.1.3 which according to the software update information is the latest. Please advise on what I can tweak on my phone such that I don't totally lose smartphone functionality, because switching off mobile data completely will mean I will miss out on some important updates (eg. WhatsApp, Corporate e-mail etc).Please help...

I have reviewed your message regarding the data usage. What I have researched about this issue is the data usage from your iPhone can be high and I understand that a plan with data can be costly. But my input about that is if you can be ok or are able to better manage the data usage the iPhone has, that is great. However, if you feel it is best to change in order to keep a handle on the data your phone uses, that's ok. I am glad to help you with this issue in any way I can.

Try this: Go to “Settings”, “Mail, Contacts,…”, “Fetch New Data”, and turn “Push” OFF. Then under “Advanced”, make sure that none of the items listed there are PUSH. This worked for my iPhone 4s, and for my wife’s iPhone 5.

I'm at home on WiFi 98% of the time and my iPhone continuously ***** in cell data. The data drain is draining my bank account.

APPLE WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND FIX THIS ISSUE BEFORE ALL THE FAITHFUL GET AN ANDROID?!?

This fix worked for me as well! Am still keeping an eagle eye on it, and turning off Cellular when at home, but all looks good for a week now.

I'm sorry - but having to manually turn on and off celular data maybe a patch, but i my mind it dramatically increases the heaches of owning an iPhone on ATT, and creates a level of stress and financial risk that just shouldn't be forced upon the consumer.

I'm glad you've stopped the data leak, but until Apple actually solves the problem, AT&T users are going to be as a whole paying a huge overage bill - for data they're not using and didn't waste.

I'm relieved to hear that I am not the only one. But I am quite annoyed that I spent over half an houe on the phone the other day with verizon and not one mention that I wasn't the only one experiencinthis problem....and it IS a problem. A BIG one! the increase in data usage is insane, and having to always remember to turn the cellular data on and off is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! When I first got an iphone, it was a huge concern that it would know (on its own) to draw from WiFi when available. It seems to have lost this ability...or rather, I lost the ability when I left my old iPhone four for my new iPhone 5, becuase that was crystal clearly where my issue began!

My apologies - but the reason is, because this is NOT the problem. Even with everything turned off and all software (such as podcasting software that has been tagged as an issue) deleted - the phone is still sucking down data for no apparent reason.

The problem is in the operating system.

I have posted this before as well - and still I keep hearing the recommendation to turn off features of the phone. Turning off features of the phone defeats the purpose of having the phone in the first place. As advertised, this phone should operate with these features ON within normal parameters - and this is not the case.

I could just go get a flip phone and be done with it. I would, though, prefer that the phone operate as advertised, so that I may avail myself of the features it provides without going through a gigabyte of data in one day.

It's getting a touch rediculious people. Thinking this is a settings or app issue just allows Apple to deny the issue. As rollcamera said, IT IS THE iOS!!!!!! Anything after 6.1.0 on the iphone 5 is plausable to data leak, but Apple wont address the issue, because not ever iPhone5 running 6.1.1 or newer is having the issue....

This is an issue that they need to address.

Then I should just carry my iPod touch around with me, too...like I used to before I got a "smart" phone which was perhaps less of a pain than remembering to turn things on and off...which is out of sight and out of mind...easily forgotten and therefore potenttially expensive, not to mention the fact that it toally defeats the purpose of having the phone in the first place. I agree with whoever it was that said, "I could then just get a flip phone" that plus my iPod and I'm running no risk of large incremental data expenditures. It should work as advertised (and at least as efficiently as my prior iPhone, a 4) and without so much additional time, energy and dinero!
