Gmail very slow to send email after iOS 6 upgrade?

Hi,

I recently upgraded to iOS 6 on my iPhone 4S. Ever since upgrading ive been experiencing problems with my Mail app (Gmail account). I can receive emails fine but when i try to send emails they take around 10 minutes to send. Before upgrading to iOS 6 (from 5.1.1) it woked perfectly.

I have checked and double checked all of the settings including SMTP server etc although this is all automatically defined by the phone. I have tried deleting the account twice and starting from scratch but i have exactly the same issue with sending emails.

I have another email account on the phone which uses POP3 and this works perfectly as it did before upgrading to iOS 6.

If anyone has any suggestions i would be extremely grateful.

Thanks.

I'm using the stock GMail configuration in the iOS Mail app and am not seeing a delay in sending messages, they go out immediately (as verified by sending a message to an account that supports push notification)

The stock GMail iOS configuration only supports fetch, which means you'll receive message notifications at the specified fetch interval, or if you manually check. But outgoing messages seem to go immediately.

So perhaps the delay you're seeing is on the receiving end, not from the sending side. But regardless, if you're using the stock iOS GMail configuation then you'll be using fetch for receiving messages. You either live with that, or use another mail app that supports push for GMail. (JB is not to be discussed on this forum, so is not considered an option)

Meg St_Clair, what do you mean by setting up Gmail as a "standard email account"? Is this setting it up as an "other" account in the iPhone mail setup app? I've tried that and I can receive messages fine but can't send at all. I get an error message that "The sender address clarkewc@ was rejected by the server." That's my correct email address and it is entered correctly in setup.

Thanks for getting back. I re-set the Gmail account as an "other" account using all the right settings this time, and it works now BUT has the same 2 to 5 minute sending delay as the built-in Gmail account. In other words, as far as I can tell, there is no way to properly send email in Gmail on iPhone 4s with ios6 except by using the Gmail App.

I don't get why you'd be seeing any delay ... I'm using the standard GMail profile provided by iOS and outgoing mail is sent immediately. Incoming mail is delayed by whatever the fetch settings are, but outgoing is immediate.

In your GMail account settings (within your actual Google account) do you have IMAP enabled? I don't know if that would have an effect, but I believe this setting should be enabled.

Hard to understand why it would be hardware-specific. I just fired up my old iPhone 4 (also on iOS 6) and with a standard GMail iOS setup there is no delay on outgoing mail. So, unless this is an iPhone 4S-only issue, which I doubt, it may be your GMail account settings, or your gauging the timing of your outgoing e-mail on an account that only supports fetch, not push.

Used to have this problem for quite a while. I'we told it to a lot of friends, iOS users, but nobody believed me.

I dont'k know exactly when it started: after iOS 6 update or after iCloud mail activation. Searched the net but no one complained.

Since the I've been struggling to send mail on gmail account using default mail app; I've noticed problems with mails that have attachments.

Now I had enough and searched again the net and I found this. Although some said Exchange doesn't work anymore on Gmail, I took my chance and found out it works perfectly fine.

Thanks!
