The iPhone 5 uses Cellular Data over WiFi?

The first two days after I received my iPhone 5, I racked up 400MB of Cellular Data. 99% of the time I was using my phone, I was connected over WiFi. So I ran a test on my own by watching a YouTube video over WiFi and then looking at my Cellular Data under the Usage menu. Sure enough, it had went up by around 10MB. I called into Apple Support and asked them what was going on. They thought that it might have been a problem with my phone or my house's WiFi connection. After them walking me through a series of test and restores, the lady semi-acknowledged that it could be a problem with how their phone interacts with the new LTE network.

If you guys out there could keep an eye on your Cellular Usage Data, that would be great. Maybe it's a problem with my iPhone 5, or maybe it's a much larger problem. Seeing as I used to have unlimited data with Verizon, being charged with everything above 2GB would be very costly for me...especially when it's not even my fault.

Hopefully we can get this issue sorted out.

Here's how to enter the Cellular Usage menu: Settings->General->Usage->Cellular Usage

I just wanted to contribute to this thread and say that I too am experiencing cell data usage despite my wifi connection. I just got the 5 a couple of weeks ago and I might have busted through my 2 gb limit (I'm awaiting for today's "usage" to register on the ATT website). Anyway, the worst offense apparently happened last night at 9:30 and I "consumed" 775MB. I was on wifi practically the whole time last night.

Anyway, I'm willing to test it out, but only after the bill has come in, b/c I don't want to mess with my cell data yet. I'm going to complain to ATT and see they could remove any overage charges. I figure if we get enough complaints about this, there may be a software fix or something that Apple could provide.

I'm unhappy with this phone so far. I miss my 4.

I'm not happy with the extreme data use. It's made me shy away from using the phones Internet capability. The bottom line is at this point I don't trust hue phone to not swallow up my entire data allowance in minutes.

The cable news channel where I live is called bay news 9. They just did a story on this and pointed to Apple forum complaints about it. They specifically mentioned that Verizon made a change but AT&T customers have gotten nothing yet. They said that Verizon's offered to not add additional charges on those customers who've been affected by this bug.

If you haven't already heard, service providers are aware of the issue and at least Verizon that I know of has put out a patch to correct the problem. Go to settings/general/about/verizon and you should see a box that states 'an update is available' by your provider. Glad it wasn't my imagination.....Verizon also paid for an extra 2GB this month to make up for the data loss

I just called AT&T to register this issue. The first lady was really nice about it, and said they have noted the problem and will make a note in case I do get overage, i will not be charged. Then she transferred me to the "data" department, the lady was RUDE! She totally accused me of not knowing how to use the apps on my phone, and that some apps are designed to use cellular data and not wifi. I explained to her that I've had the iPhone since 2009 and never had issues like this, been using the same apps. She was just absolutely rude and tries to point the finger back at me. Makes me so mad!!!!!!!!

I read a news article today in a Melbourne Australia paper that said the mobile data bug is know to Apple. The phoen seems to prefer 4G over wifi. Suggestions that iCould Safari syncing might be part of the problem. Others think it might be Apple podcast appand removing it might help. The carriers Telstra and Vodafone in Australia said they were away of issues. Telstra is in discussions with Apple to try an dfix the problemthat is causing iphone 5 to prefer LTE or 4G data over wifi even when connectd to wifi. On twitter Telstra aid there was a suspected issue with the iphone. Vodafone said there was an issue at its end and Optus is investigating. Virgin Mobile is also look at the issue. On 30 September US telco Verizon and Apple released an update which fixed an issue that caused iphone 5 to use Verizon mobile data while the phone was connected to wifi

Hi makdaddy8888

Just had a lengthy conversation with Vodafone. They say in their case with me that the issue concerns iCloud and inadvertent "consent" to sync iCloud over mobile rather than wifi? Our phone is running iOS6 on a iPhone4, will get carrier patch deets etc asap. On our phone the download traffic was 184mb and the upload traffic was 6.3gb. How does this relate to your experience?
