The iPhone 5 uses Cellular Data over WiFi?

The first two days after I received my iPhone 5, I racked up 400MB of Cellular Data. 99% of the time I was using my phone, I was connected over WiFi. So I ran a test on my own by watching a YouTube video over WiFi and then looking at my Cellular Data under the Usage menu. Sure enough, it had went up by around 10MB. I called into Apple Support and asked them what was going on. They thought that it might have been a problem with my phone or my house's WiFi connection. After them walking me through a series of test and restores, the lady semi-acknowledged that it could be a problem with how their phone interacts with the new LTE network.

If you guys out there could keep an eye on your Cellular Usage Data, that would be great. Maybe it's a problem with my iPhone 5, or maybe it's a much larger problem. Seeing as I used to have unlimited data with Verizon, being charged with everything above 2GB would be very costly for me...especially when it's not even my fault.

Hopefully we can get this issue sorted out.

Here's how to enter the Cellular Usage menu: Settings->General->Usage->Cellular Usage

Well now, this is weird ... I too saw an unprecedented data spike in August on iPhone 4S 5.1.1 on AT&T.

AT&T and Customer Service = Does Not Compute.

Last week's call: "I'll fix everthing and not charge you for overage." Nothing happened.

This week: "Not our phone, let me connect you to Apple."

Apple states "iPhone cannot use cell data if it's *plugged in* while asleep."

Meanwhile, I've got everything turned off that might want to connect by itself, including iCloud and Location Services, except for Find My Phone. Mail is on manual.

Be sure you've got some time and plenty of patience before getting involved with AT&T. Really. Maybe wait for a carrier update ...

Apple says they have put out a software upgrade to fix this issue. Is this true. I received my IPhone 5 last night, but I am still waiting for my sons to come in to get them both activated. I got a black 32 GB, and my son got a white 16GB. I ordered them on 9-19. The ship date on my sons is 10-5-2012. So I am hoping they get this fixed soon. If you have verizon what data plans are you guys using? I would like to stay with the 5GB. I have a rock solid WIFI at my house. I want to turn my sons data off and he will only use WIFI. Thanks Everyone

That would be a huge waste of time. I've done a full restore to my iPhone 5 for a different reason but it did nothing to Change way the phone was consuming data. Besides Verizon put a patch out for their carrier software on iPhone (5). So if just doing a restore fixed the data problems that's probably all they would have us do. Your carrier IS aware of the situation. They're just NOT helping you.

My wife and I are also experiencing the same issue with our AT&T iphone5s. We are both connected to wifi at least 80% of the day, yet our data usage continues to skyrocket out of control. My phone indicates usage of over 10 GBs of data in the last week alone, even though I use no data-intensive apps over LTE.

Even more bewildering, when I log into my account on at&t's website and look at my cell data usage, it only shows usage of 200 MBs for the entire billing period.

So, is the phone actually using data when connected to wifi, or is the iphone's own cellular usage data incorrect, or BOTH? If it was the former, then why in the world would at&t's website only report 200 MBs of data usage?

Hello fellow iPhone 5 AT&T users,

I just got of the phone with AT&T & with Apple. Apperantly Apple engenners are working on a fix for this for AT&T customers (this is what was told to me). Verizon customers already got a fix: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5526 (Carrier Version 13.1), AT&T customers only have (Carrier Version 13.0).

I am now trying to communicate with AT&T to get credited for my data usage which like everyone else has spiked since I upgraded. I suggest all AT&T customers dial 611 from your iPhone 5 and when pormpted, dial '1' then '6' then '0'. You will then be asked to list the last 4 of your SS# (primary account holder) and then wait for a representative to answer the phone. Good luck, 10 minutes and still waiting 😟

Just my two cents...but this is a recent chat transcript between myself and at&t:

You are now chatting with 'Nick Cedillo'

Nick Cedillo: I will be happy to assist you today.

Nick Cedillo: I understand you are having issues with data usage. Is that right?

Chet Lewis: thanks, yes - just wanted to add my name to the growing list of customers who have noticed enormous data usage stats since upgrading to iphone 5....Spoke with Apple and they advised they are aware of the At&t data issue and are working on it but I needed to let my carrier know I was also aware...

Nick Cedillo: Ok thanks for that information. I will make a note of this on your account. Apple should be releasing a software update to resolve that issue.

Chet Lewis: very good....thanks for your assistance Nick....

I received my Iphone 5 on sept 21 on verizon. I've received the patch a few days ago but before that did not have a real big jumps in data. Before Iphone 5 my average usage over 6 months was 700 mb. This morning I received a text from verizon saysing I at 50% data usage, then 30 minutes later another text saying I'm at 75%. I looked at my phone usage and it says 1.7gb received. I can't believe it. Just a day before I looked and it was 300mb. I'm 11 days into the cycle. I pulled up my data usage on verizon's website and it shows 328mb at 1:06pm, 364mb at 2:34pm, and then 630mb at 8:03pm. At 8pm I was finishing up at my son middle school open house and was not using my phone. How can it us 630mb. I don't have netflix or stream movies. Called apple, they said close all apps and do a hard reset, and monitor your data. If it continues do a restore. Verizon says to increase my data plan and they will credit me so I don't get any overages.

What is using my data????
