Apple TV Death after update?

Allowing the apple tv to update it's software was the biggest mistake ever. Ruined a whole a day trying to trouble shoot this problem. Was having the same problems, except 75% of the time the screen remained black on bootup. The other 25% of the time I would get the language selection screen, but would be trapped in a loop and would not let me go past that.

I'm going to downgrade to the previous firmware. Wasted 6 hours on this.

I had all the same problems and more. It was all fairly easy to undo though. I downgraded the software and all my problems were blown away. The automatic updates are painful. You will sometimes inadvertantly press the remote causing an unplanned update.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I wish apple were more responsive but being a large beast causes issues for them.

I am still working on the netflix app on my updated iphone 4Gs it aslo had issues after a recent update.

They DO NOT reply to people individually, but this is the way to get comments through to the development team.

Still not working for me.

The topic is meant to give awareness to people who are looking to update to the latest firmware. If you are, don't do it. And I believe enough feedback is already given by the others to Apple.

This is also to voice our concern (and anger to a certain extent), of why an update was provided which failed to check for such an important feature (of ethernet connectivity) in a streaming device. And if it was working perfectly in the older firmware, why did it fail in the latest one? Someone must have mistakenly did something wrong. And if so, is the fix that complicated that it takes until now a month and could be longer, to roll out another one? I'm seriously getting worried about Apple and the company as a whole, releasing less than impressive updates as this, and the map issue in iPhone 5.

For the record I am affected by the ethernet connectivity problem (with only WIFI connection is working in the latest firmware) and have reverted back to the original ATV3 firmware. Awaiting (patiently) for a new release to hopefully solve this problem.

ok, i managed to magically fix it myself by pure chance.

I've attempted the restore on a MacPro machine at my office, this is a macpro that was never used with iTunes as we use it for other work with Final Cut pro and After Effects,etc.

it magically worked, so now my Apple TV gen2 is working with the latest software.

someone mentioned that updates are unstable when performed on macbookpros because of low power off USBs, I'm not sure, my Apple TV failed during update directly via inbuilt software update.

The scariest of things is that when I took the apple tv to an apple store they attempted the restore and failed, sentencing that my apple tv was dead and faulty and needed repair, and tried to charge me for it!

This clearly reveals how bad instore service is. So, keep searching the internet people, the "official" update or the "official" way, is clearly the least reliable!

anyway, lesson learnt: NEVER EVER UPDATE APPLE SOFTWARE BEFORE CHECKING FIRST ON THE FORUMS ABOUT THE DAMAGE IT MAKES. APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATES ARE FULL OF BUGS. REMEMBER, IT'S FREE FOR APPLE TO TEST THEIR DODGY SOFTWARE UPDATE ON US AND RELEASE THE SOFTWARE RIGHT AWAY, INSTEAD OF WORKING ON IT MORE BEFORE RELEASE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

I am using PC, I download the ipsw file... then hold SHIFT and click on Restore... BUT I cannot find the IPSW file in the Open Diaolog... please help..

My only issue with version 5.1 was the inability to stream iTunes from my PC.

The first time I downgraded to the 5.0.2 version, Apple TV3 still could not see my PC. I then said "Why not" and upgraded to version 5.1. It still didn't work.

The second time I downgraded to the 5.0.2 version, Apple TV3 still could not see my PC. Grrrrrrr, but then I got it to work.

Here's my setup and what I did to get it working.

Verizion internet cable from the wall to a Verizon wireless router. The wireless is turned off because I have a Netgear wireless router plugged into the Verizon wireless router. I had the AppleTV plugged directly to Verizon router. This set up worked 100%, until recently.

I unplugged the AppleTV from the Verizon router and plugged it into the Netgear router. Voila! Everything is back to working 100%. Thank you forum members for finding an interim solution.

Today I got my replaced ATV 3 with installed 5.1. Everything is working again (WIFI, Ethernet), for now....

Not getting what I am supposed to do. Downloaded the version for ATV2, then what? How do I open/run it via iTunes?

I may have already posted this, but - how do I do this? I downloaded the software from the ATV2 link you listed, how do I run it via iTunes? Where is the "restore" button you mentioned? Very much appreciate your help!

You then have to use the micro USB cable and then attach the ATV to your itunes application on the computer.

Here the apple tv comes up as does an iphone(very similar). It will ask you if you would like to upgrade the software. By default it will do the latest available software (u do nor want this). But because you have downloaded a specific version for your ATV2 press "option(alt)" button when pressing the upgrade button. You can than point to the correct software downloaded ealier.

- The latest iTunes update failed;

- My Apple TV 3 died with that last update;

- The home sharing feature died between iTunes, my iPad and my iPhone;

- My iPad works better using Windows 8 remotely than the native iPad itself...
