Apple TV Death after update?

Seen quite a few people with this problem. After the update the light just blinks. After unplugging ethernet, it can't find router. Some people reset the router and said that worked. Others restored by plugging into iTunes and got it working. I did all of the above multiple times, still death. Going to have to take it into the Apple Store tomorrow I guess. Unless another update comes that fixes this.

Also the weird part, I know it's under warranty since it isn't even a year old, but I went to check the serial number and Apple said the serial number wasn't found.

Had the same issues. Since resetting didn't work for me, I downloaded an old version of 5.0.2 software and restored that via iTunes (hold the option key when pressing the Restore button, this allows to point to a downloaded .ipsw file).

The old version still works fine, so it can't be a hardware thing. Waiting for a 5.1.1 update now

For me, the process of upgrading and downgrading had also killed the WiFi signal on my ATV3. It could no longer hold a wireless connection for more than a few minutes as soon as I started streaming. So I ended up taking my ATV back to an Apple store for an exchange.

After I did the update, it removed most of my icons like vimeo and youtube and netflix...only left me with home sharing and setting....How do I get those back anyone know?

Use the USB restore option, the automatic update on ATV is flawed.

well, i just changed the IP address on the apple TV (changed the last digit up 1), reset everything, and voila. All fixed!

That probably will only works if you use static IP addressing.

For most users, dynamic IP is used and it is the default option, in that case, the IP address on the ATV is assigned to it by the DHCP server on the router.

Sadly the steps in the first post of this thread has failed to resolve my issue and the assistance I have had from Apple thusfar has been very disappointing, including an unhelpful service centre nearby and the need to travel again at my own expense to the Apple store to have an appointment with a 'Genius'.

Just another step closer to going back to PCs for me, Apple since the iPhone and their success have become increasingly disappointing to me.

I have downgraded to 5.0.2 and everything is working great except for every now and then when, all of a sudden, I get a message that my Apple TV is not connected to the internet. It takes about a second or two, just enough to stop the movie I am watching and takes me back to the home screen. I hit Computers, Movies and everything goes back to normal... for a while.

Apple TVI hooked up via HDMI to very nice BOSE home entertainment system. The BOSE system hooked up by HDMI to the TV.

Before the update everything just worked. After the update Apple TV failed to light up my screen.

Got the system restored at the Apple Store. Worked fine on their TV hook up. Failed miserably at home. Disconnected the BOSE system and connected Apple TV directly to the TV. It works but no surround sound. So sadly i"m back to PS3.

Very interesting. Similar experience to mine. The 5.1 update did irreversible damage to the hardware.

On my ATV3, the update killed my WiFi hardware. So, even downgrading back to 5.0.2, the WiFi was still dead. I ended up having my ATV replaced under warranty.
