Tap on the top of my iPhone 5 and you get a rattling sound from inside the hardware. Wouldn't be horrible but it effects two other things. First when I speak with someone, if they talk even slightly loudly, I can hear the piece inside rattle, creating a horrible metallic sound. Second when my phone vibrates, it has a very harsh sound. I took my phone to the Genius bar just now and they checked other iPhone 5's in stock -- they all rattle. The Genius told me, "I don't know what to tell you." If this is normal, I'll return it. This can't be intended...

I too have this rattle when I lightly tap behind near the rear camera and top button. I had the same thing with my iPhone4 ... Maybe it's my finger! Seriously though, a bit annoyed considering how I have to pay month for two years.

    Hi Gandalf,

I feel the same rattling when I tap the back of the phone near the camera. I confirmed it, my iPhone 4 does it too, but the rattling is less. I am not sure though what is it. Whether its just design, or is there seriously something wrong inside the phone. Considering that my 4 does it too, I feel a little better. I googled about this, a lot of people had the same issue with 4S, and its probably the camera optics. Anyhow, I will be taking my phone to the Apple store and get it checked. Let me know if you find something too.

It's not as bad as this one is it (thumping sound)?

had the same problem, the top rattles when tapped at the back and shaken. apple said it had been reported as an issue but is prefectly normal...very irritating though!

I have the same issue and it is now being reported as the auto focus in the camera. They say to hold down each and every button and shake or tap the phone. If the rattling stops, then you have a porblem. But if it continues, it is perfectly normal.

I'm pretty sure that its the lock button which is rattling in the housing.

If it's the same rattle I am hearing when I tap the back of the phone near the camera then I'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about. From the sound of it, there must be a small gap between the back cover and the logic board. So it's not really a rattle, just the noise of you tapping the metal back of the phone making it sound like a rattle. That's what it sounds like to me anyway. also looking at the Ifixit iPhone 5 teardown it kind of looks like there is a gap there also.

Same here. In my opinion there shouldn't be coming a sound out of the phone.

I have called Apple Support both in the US and Asia, everyone I spoke with said "It's Normal". It's really odd for a phone to produce that kind of sound when tapped. I can only wish they can resolve it and recall these units, which I doubt to happen. Oh well.

    Hey all,

My phone also has a rattling sound. From what I can tell, it's nothing to worry about.  The sound is really coming from two separate locations.  The sleep / wake button at the top and the home button below.  If you lightly tap on either button, without fully depressing it, you will hear the sounds causing the rattle.  I have witnessed no misfires when fully depressing either button. So long as that doesn't happen, I think we are in the clear. Hope this helps!

i appreciate the hope that we're all good here, but these are expensive gadgets. if some connection or something wiggles loose when the protection runs out, i'll be mega-unhappy.

It's definitely the autofocus as mentioned above.  It is also normal,in most cases.  The Nokia Lumia 900 had the same rattle, though, with that phone the vibrator was near the camera lens causing a horrible rattle every time it vibrated.  At least it's not that bad :)

If you listen closely to the lens when in camera mode, then switch to video mode, you can hear a similar tap as autofocus is disabled.  That's the source of the sound.

there was an updated note on the youtube and it says the battery is loose. to fix, put the phone glass up on a hard surface and press your palm against it. this temporarily fixes the problem, but my battery still comes loose after
